TOWNSEND, Margery Leurena, 88, passed away at Surf Lodge Nursing Home, Lockeport on Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Born June 29, 1920, in East Green Harbour, she was the daughter of the late Annie Maude (MacKenzie) and Amos Roache. She was a faithful member of the Pentecostal Church for 70 years. Her family is comforted, knowing she has found peace with her Lord in heaven. Marge was most content when working for her church and family. She was an unpretentious woman who liked to give of herself to others, always willing and ready to help support anyone in need, whether it be in sickness or otherwise. A “Good Samaritan” would be a fitting description of Marge’s character as she has helped many people through her kindness and generosity. Marnie (as she was affectionately known to her immediate family) was a true homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and quilting, all of which she often shared with her family and friends. She and Moe especially loved camping in Kedgie and their trips to the summer family camp in Debert with their family and friends. She is survived by her son, Basil, grandsons, Harry, Evie and Eric and granddaughters, Rena and Beverly; sister, Eva (Harry) Harding and many nieces and nephews, some of which are like her own children. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Morris sister, Helen (Pryor) Stuart; brothers, Percy (Myrtle) Roache; Evans (Jessie) Roache. Funeral service was held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 in the Lockeport Pentecostal Church with Pastor Eric Revie officiating. Interment in Wildwood Cemetery, East Green Harbour. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Gideon Memorial Bible Society or charity of choice. Nancy H. Saunders, 85, of Sandy Cove, passed into the loving and tender hands of God on Oct. 25 at her daughter’s home under family and hospice care. She had only recently returned to the states to visit with family when she learned of her fatal diagnosis.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rodney V. Saunders, Jr., who was born Yarmouth, and served as a major in the U.S. Army, where he was an aviator and combat engineer.
She is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Paul and Barbara Saunders, Mobile, Aalabama; Don and Blanca Saunders, Austin, Texas; Bill and Marianne Saunders, Alexandria, Virginia; Sharon and Bill Bryan, Waleska, Georgia; Steve and Kris Saunders, Roswell, Georgia; Rodney and Debbie Saunders, Fayetteville, Georgia; and Stacey and Patrick Oliphant of Newnan, Georgia; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Nancy was a native of New Rochelle, N.Y., and received her nursing degree from Lennox Hill Hospital, New York City. After school, Nancy served as a RN in the U.S. Navy until the end of the Second World War and later as county health nurse in Ozark, Alabama.
As a military family, they were stationed at many bases stateside and overseas. After retiring from army life in 1964 at Fort Rucker, Ala., they moved to the Atlanta, Georgia, area. In 1975, they and youngest daughter Stacey retired to the family home built by Rodney’s grandmother in Sandy Cove in 1895. The family’s ancestry there dates back to 1788. Rodney spent his retirement lovingly restoring the home until his unexpected passing in 1991 from a stroke.
Nancy was the best mother a child could hope for. She had a gentle soul and the most delightful sense of humour. She loved crossword puzzles, gardening, and entertaining family and friends on summer visits. The family wishes to thank ‘Lady Nancy’s’ many friends in Sandy Cove and Digby who helped in so many selfless, uncountable ways in her later years that enabled her to live a full and peaceful life in a place and with people she loved dearly. She will be greatly missed by all.
Nancy’s ashes will be returned to Sandy Cove to rest beside Rodney’s in the family home. Joint memorial and interment services will be held for Nancy and Rodney at a later date.
