Organizers of the New Minas Young Drivers of Canada met at Northeast Kings Educational Centre (NKEC) in Canning Tuesday, Nov. 4 while working in partnership with several Valley schools, local police and organizers of MADD to promote the “Teens Against Drinking and Driving” program.

Twenty-four NKEC students attended and are planning to move forward, but have not yet set a date for their first meeting.



Ross Creek Centre for the Arts presents jewelry-making with Shannon Richardson Sunday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A gourmet lunch with the artists is included. Shannon will introduce techniques like chain-making and cold connections with alternative materials. There is no experience necessary and students are encouraged to bring an assortment of materials such as photos, fabric, wood, and plastic for the jewelry workshop.

Richardson studied Jewelry/Metal Arts at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD), and holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts from the University of New Brunswick/NBCCD. Shannon’s jewelry company, Formation Silverworks, Kingston, NS was formed in 2006.

Adult Art Sundays continues at Ross Creek with a Photo Narrative workshop by Sue Tileston, also Sunday, Nov. 16. Class runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes a gourmet lunch and guided tour of “My Story”, Sue and Nat Tileston’s RBC Community Gallery exhibition. Opening reception from 1-3 p.m.

Nathaniel and Susan Tileston worked as professional photographers for 20 years in New York City before moving to Nova Scotia in 1982. They have provided small groups of Burmese refugees on the Thai/Burma border with digital cameras and basic instruction since 2006.

Bookmobile arrives at the Lions Hall on Mon., Nov. 10 from 7-8 p.m.



Royal Canadian Legion Branch 73 will hold a Remembrance Day service Tuesday, Nov. 11 beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the Canning Lions Hall with a march in full uniform from the Legion to the hall, weather permitting. The service will begin at 10:10 a.m. with a church service. Call the Legion at 582-7246 for further information.



Canning Heritage calendars, inspired by the Churches of Blomidon Country tour, will be available soon at the library, at local businesses, and at the 14th annual 4 Church Bazaar in November at a cost of $10.



The 14th annual 4 Church Bazaar and Luncheon will be held Sat., Nov. 22 at the Canning Lions Hall. Together the St. Lawrence Catholic, the Trinity United, St. Michael’s Anglican and the United Baptists churches will present one giant Christmas Bazaar and Luncheon.

It’s a great place to meet new and old friends, purchase some unique gifts and Christmas bake goods and enjoy a delicious soup and dessert luncheon.

Glooscap Elementary School: No school for students Nov. 11, an assembly will be held on the 21st, home and school meeting at 6:45 on the 24th and an early dismissal of 11:05 on the 25th. Also on the 25 and on the 26, family photos take place at 6:30 p.m.

Light and Lens Photography will offer Holiday Card Family Photo Night at Glooscap School Nov. 25 and 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Each session takes approximately 10 minutes.

Cards are 4x6 with a holiday border, are printed on the spot, and priced at just $1 per card. Proceeds go to the Home and School in support of skating and swimming programs. Payment is at time of sitting: no cheques and cash only. Exact amount would be appreciated.

Mrs. Trueman’s, Turner/Vaughan, and Burgess’s classes are still in need of another 30 clean, dry 11.5-litre ice cream buckets.



Northeast Kings Education Centre: Ms. Reeve’s Grade 12 drama class will provide a Remembrance Day assembly Nov. 10 in the gymnasium at 1 p.m. for high school and at 2 p.m. for middle school, and a Home and School meeting at 7 p.m. with a guest speaker from Child and Youth Mental Health with an overview of their youth programs. There is no school for students Nov. 11, and the senior high report cards are distributed Nov. 12.

NKEC Titan license plates are now available for only $10. Contact Ms. Zwicker in student services or you can purchase a plate at the home football games. Proceeds to help support the team.

Curling will be available for Grade 6-12 students on Thursdays beginning mid-November.



Apple Tree Landing presents “One of a Kind” auction, a 20-year celebration, Saturday, Nov. 22 from 7-11 p.m. Musical talent by Susan Ueffing, cash bar, grand raffle prize, and live and silent auction along with wonderful appetizers. Tickets are $10 per person, available in advance by calling Apple Tree Landing at 582-3086, at the door during the event, by contacting any board or staff member, or from Cochrane’s Pharmacy in Canning. It’s sure to be a fun-filled evening with something for everyone.



Canning Lions Club: Tickets for the remote electric fireplace with Riverview stone insert with 4,250 B.T.U. that heats 400 square feet are available from any Canning Lions member or at the Canning Sunday flea markets for $2 each or 3 for $5. Draw date is Dec. 21, just in time to hang your stockings.



Sunday Flea Markets: The Canning Lions Hall opens to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tables are $5 each. Canteen is available. Wheelchair accessible. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.



Food bank donations to those in need are greatly appreciated. Contact Harry Currie at 582-3886 to drop off non-perishable food items during the mornings at 1000 Seminary St., Canning, or you can drop off items at various locations around town.
