Huggins seminar explores underground science

Acadia University will host the 29th Huggins Science Seminar Monday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. in Room 10 of the Huggins Science Hall. This year’s distinguished presenter is Dr. Art McDonald, the director of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), who will present 'A View of Our Universe From 2km Underground'.

Researchers at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory explore the fundamental laws of physics with neutrinos from the sun, dark matter particles left over from the Big Bang, and rare forms of radioactivity.

The presentation will illustrate the unique scientific and engineering aspects of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory project, where an ultra-clean laboratory and large (22m by 34m) detector have been constructed 2 km underground in CVRD-INCO's Creighton mine.

The results of observatory efforts to-date, their impact on fundamental physics and astrophysics, and the future scientific program for SNO and SNOLAB will be described.
