Shelburne man found guilty of weapons, assault offences

A Shelburne county man facing numerous weapons and assault charges has been found guilty on all counts.

Roland Atwood was arrested by RCMP after a July 30 incident in which Atwood used a screwdriver and knife in two assaults and threatened several people with a firearm at a Gunning Cove residence.

Although he left the home before police arrived, he later surrendered to RCMP at another residence.

Some of the charges Atwood was found guilty of by Judge Robert Prince on Tuesday, Oct. 21 included two assault charges, uttering threats, pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm.

Crown Attorney Jim Fyfe described Atwood that evening as an intoxicated, angry individual who assaulted and threatened people, noting that the incident could have easily escalated further.

“It was a dangerous situation,” he said.

Atwood has been held in custody since his arrest and will now remain in jail until his sentencing on Dec. 17.
