King’s Theatre hosting Directors’ Workshop
Annapolis Royal event set for November 15 and 16
King’s Theatre is hosting a directors’ workshop November 15 and 16.
Its purpose is to train new directors at the beginners level for participation in community theatre.
The workshop is being presented by Tony Napoli who has been involved in community theatre projects for more than 30 years. Tony has directed plays in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The workshop will cover all aspects of the director’s role from choosing the cast to opening night. Of particular importance for the director is determining the movements of the actors on the stage. This is known as blocking.
“The director must be aware of the fact that there is more to a play than dialogue,” said Napoli. “Every movement, every gesture tells the audience something.”
The workshop will emphasize that it is the director’s responsibility to oversee all aspects of a production, including scene design, stage lighting, sound effects and costuming.
Other topics will include:
•Tips on interpreting a play
•Types and styles of directing
•Awareness of the broad spectrum of types of plays
•When to hold auditions and when not to
•An exercise in skill development
•How to move gracefully on the stage
The workshop meets at King’s Theatre from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, and on Sunday, November 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The cost of the two-day workshop is $50.
