HOUSE FIRE DELAYS ANNUAL BANQUET



A 6:24 p.m. page for a house fire on Albert Street, Friday, Oct. 17, had many volunteer firefighters in their dress uniforms as they along with veterans and guests were preparing to attend the department’s annual banquet. Turnout gear and breathing apparatus soon was donned giving the men plenty of protection. Engines 4 & 1, the aerial, units 14, 26, and 27 were at the scene for approximately two hours. The fire in a second floor apartment which was badly damaged was determined to be accidental.



YFD ANNUAL BANQUET



A good crowd was on hand to enjoy a buffet style dinner catered by Wayne White. Chief Ken Kelly opened the evening with opening remarks on behalf of the department as well as remarks from the Town of Yarmouth. The blessing was given by Padre Rev. Bill Newell who also remembered three members who died during this past year: Archie Leblanc, Camille Saulnier, and Art Spears. A toast to the veterans by Bruce Hopkins made special mention of four veterans of 90 years of age or older; James Amirault 97, Murray Allen 91, Jim McRae 90 and John Patten 90.

Chief Kelly introduced Mayor Charles Crosby, Warden Bryan Smith, Deputy Warden Brian Noble, Councillors Esther Dares, Wally Strickland and two new members to the Yarmouth Fire Department, Jeremy Atwood and Guy Surette.

Special mention was made to Muscular Dystrophy representative Shelly McWilliams who spoke and thanked the department for their donation of over $10,000. Clarendon Robicheau, the chapter rep was also introduced. Service awards and medal presentations were presented to: Jim Cook – 25 years, Steve Jeffery – 25 years, Jack Surette – 25 years, Lynn Seeley – 30 years, Roger King - 35 years and Ernie Steele – 35 years.



THREE RETIRE WITH VETERAN STATUS



Special awards were presented to three retiring volunteers; Rick Quesnel 18 years, Jim Cook 25 years and Lynn Seeley 30 years. Rick and Lynn are currently serving the department as platoon chiefs. Following the presentations the benediction was given by Rev. Bill Newell.



AUXILIARY PRESIDENT AWAY FOR MORE SURGERY



Wendy Deveau has returned to New Brunswick for additional surgery on her knee. Our best wishes for a good recovery.



EAST PUBNICO MEETING



The East Pubnico Fire Department’s regular monthly meeting takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 7 p.m. at their fire hall.



FIRE BOWLING



Week’s results: Carleton 8 pts – Salmon River 0 pts, Ladies 8 pts – Carleton #2 0 pts, West Pubnico 8 pts – Naiad 0 pts, Wedgeport 8 pts – Neptune 0 pts, East Pubnico 6 pts – Lions 2 pts.



Standings: West Pubnico – 36, Wedgeport – 32, East Pubnico – 30, Carlton – 30, Carleton #2 – 24, Lions – 24, Ladies – 22, Naiad – 21, Salmon River – 0, Neptune – 0.



Carleton’s Danny Hennigar pulled down both high single – 132 and high triple – 345.



HALLOWEEN FIRES



Maybe this writer is beginning to show his age but years ago one of the event’s practices was to hollow out a pumpkin, cut a face and place a lighted candle inside. If this is still taking place we would advise parents to be sure young ones are very careful with these. Loose clothing could come in contact with the candle flame and cause serious burns. Have a safe and fun Halloween.
