Indoor soccer comes to South Shore

Ken Cameron, president of the Queens County Soccer Association, says “Minis” to “Senior” players can register 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25 in the Community Room at Liverpool Market Superstore. Persons who can’t make it can contact Cameron evenings at 354-2216.

The games, one a week from Nov. to April, for each Tier 2 division, will be held in the HB Studios Sports Centre, also known as the Field House, in Bridgewater.

Cameron says. “It’s up and running. We’re looking at starting the first of Nov. for the indoor program. It’s just an amazing facility - if you can imagine the junior high facility with a building over it.”

He says he wants to highlight although the Queens Co. association would prefer to field some teams, all players who register will get to play.

“If we have five under 18 girls and two under 16 boys, they’ll find a team to play on if there’s not a team from here. You will be playing. Ideally it would be nice to have some teams but it is also nice meeting other players and mingling with people you’re going to play against next summer.”

He says the ages that can play range from those born 2003 or later to men and women of any age. A firm schedule has been established, which Cameron says should increase interest even more in the league.

Personally, he’s coached the under 18 girl’s team in the summer and hopes to do so in this league.

“It’s going to be incredible for soccer because we only have soccer here from May until the end of Aug, and then we’re pretty well done except for some school soccer. Hopefully, it will draw new kids into soccer as well as people who haven’t had an opportunity to play for years now.”

He says soccer “explodes” wherever indoor facilities are built.

Seven players from each team instead of the usual 11 will play during the games; therefore, only 12 to 15 players are needed to form a team.

Cameron adds, “There will be lot more contact on the ball, more passing and more control of the ball. It’s going to be a lot more fun, I’d say.”
