 October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Marshall James Nickerson, 1916-2008, of Royal Court in Riverview and formerly of Paturel St. Shediac, NB passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Monday, October 13, 2008 at the age of 92 years. Born in Port Saxon, NS; Shelburne Co., he was the son of the late Percy and Jenny (nee Greenwood) Nickerson. Marshall was an adherent of Trinity United Church and in his early years he attended St. John’s United Church. He was a retired Professional Engineer having worked with the CNR Engineer Dept. Marshall was the Engineer in charge of the building of the Moncton Hump Yard. He enjoyed lawn bowling and boating while living in Shediac. He was a former member of the William Ling Lawn Bowling Club, Past President of the MCA and he was a member of Association of Professional Engineers. Marshall was a veteran of WWII, having served from 1942 to 1946 with the Royal Canadian Army 23rd Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers. He will be sadly missed by his daughter Judy and her husband John Baxter of Shediac Cape, NB and Bethleham IN. USA; his grand daughters Kelleah (Barry) Fulmer, New Albany IN; and Krista (Robert) Hynes, Louisville, KY; great-grand daughters Ashley LeAnn Fulmer and Emily Nicole Hynes and his great grandson John Robert Baxter Fulmer. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife Florence (nee Trask) Nickerson in 2004 and by his grandson John W.A. Baxter in 2008. A memorial service was held at Riverview Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 214 Pine Glen Rd. on Thursday, October 16, 2008 with Rev. Aaron Billard officiating. The Riverview Veterans and Armed Forces Association held a Veterans Service Thursday, October 16, 2008. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Shediac, NB.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued DEMOND, Daisy Irene – 81, of South Brookfield, Queens County, passed away peacefully on October 13th, 2008, in Queens Manor, Liverpool.Born on November 7th, 1926 in Milton, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Phoebie (Saunders) Whynot. Daisy was a member of the North Brookfield W.I.N.S. for 23 years. She was an Avon Lady for 10 years. She collected for numerous charities including the Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Kidney Foundation. Daisy enjoyed painting, knitting, quilting, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.Daisy is survived by her husband of 51years, Murray; four daughters Leann (Phillip) Bentley, of Upper Tantallon; Kathy (Gary Levy) DeMond, of Brooklyn; Pat (Rob Whynot) DeMond, of Milton; Valerie (Tim Croft) DeMond, of Milton: brother Clyde “Buddy” (Marion) Whynot of Milton; sister-in-law Carol Whynot, of Milton; six grandchildren, Lisa Miller, John Bentley, Sean Levy, Kerry Whynot, Jade Whynot, and James DeMond and Three great-grandchildren, Jayden Sienna, and Sofia.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Joseph Gustave “Gus” Thibault - 85, Somerset, Kings Co. passed away on Monday October 13, 2008, at home. Born on December 30, 1922, in Church Point, Digby Co., he was a son of the late Joseph and Margaret Thibault. Gus had worked during the 1960’s as a farmer for Wilfred Horsnell and for Lewis Chute doing cement work. In 1972, he began working at Larsen Packers Ltd., Berwick, receiving a Safety Campaign Certificate in 1983 and retiring in 1986. Surviving are his daughter Gena (Reg) Dempsey, Victoria Harbour, Kings Co.; grandchildren, Erin & Victoria Dempsey, Victoria Harbour; Daniel Rogers, Yarmouth; sister, Zita Comeau, Seabrook, Digby Co.; several nieces & nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary C. (Muise) Thibault; brother, Leo Thibault; sisters, Katherine Saulnier; Ceceile Romain; Mary Sisco; Evelyn MacLeod. Visitation for Gus was held 7-9 p.m., Friday October 17, in the H.C.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Ronald A. Grant - 90, Wolfville, passed away Wednesday October 15, 2008 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in McAdam, N.B. he was the son of the late Roy and Mable (Johnston) Grant. Ron was a resident of Wolfville for over 50 yrs. He was a very active member of the Wolfville United Baptist Church. He was a representative of Great West Life for over 30 yrs., a member of the Wolfville Rotary Club and always active in the community. Ron was a loving and caring man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Mary Grant, Wolfville; daughters, Susan (Gordon Gavin) , Kentville; Mary Jane (Michael) Jeffrey, Enfield; granddaughters, Sarah (Chris) Hamilton; Barbara (Bill) Hibbs, both of Cole Harbour.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Phyllis Audrey Best – 86, of Port Williams, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Church Street, Kings County, she was the only daughter of the late Horace and Edith (Burbidge) Rand. She farmed along side her husband for many years and was also employed with Prescott House Museum in the opening years. She was the Garment Club Leader for the Cornwallis Project 4-H Club. She was also a life member of the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia and a member of the Port Williams United Baptist Church. She is survived by her care-giver and niece, Barb (George) West, Church Street; their children, Hugh, Martha and Andrea, all at home, Rachel, Hilden; a sister-in-law, Doris Rand, Port Williams; several additional nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George; a son, Leonard; three brothers, Keith, Hugh and Eric Rand; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Mildred Rand. There was no visitation, by request. Born in Church Street, Port Williams, he was a son of the late Lloyd and Dorothy (Johnstone) Pineo. He was a lifelong farmer and had been employed with Ells Brothers Limited for over 20 years. He later worked with Bragg Lumber Company. Gerald enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially loved spending time with his family.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Terry Dean Flynn, age 46, of Garlands Crossing. It was with great sadness that the family of Terry Dean Flynn, announced his passing, after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, October 13, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on December 1, 1961, in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he is the son of Joan (Bowman) Flynn and the late Morton Flynn. He was an employee at Fundy Gypsum Company for 27 years as a heavy equipment operator. In his younger years, Terry enjoyed playing for the Fundy Ball Team, aptly called "The Nit Wits". He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Terry loved to spend time with his family and friends, especially his beloved daughter, Cailin. Terry's favorite season was fall, so it was bittersweet that he left us then, surrounded by family. He will be missed by all who knew him. Besides his mother, Terry is survived by a daughter, Cailin; brothers, Earl (Heather), Windsor; Tony (Bonnie), Windsor; Morton Jr. (Kathy), Windsor; Duane (Dianne), Truro; sisters, Donna (Bob) Thomson, Windsor; Cathy (Gary) Benedict, Truro/Windsor; companion, Lori Anne Lowthers, many nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by his father, Morton Lawrence Flynn (1999).  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued LANDRY, James Franklyn – 63, Wyman Road, Yarmouth, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at home. Born July 17, 1945 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Cyril Emile and Margaret Jane (Harrington) Landry. James worked as a scallop and lobster fisherman, and he took great pride in keeping a beautiful lawn. Surviving are his wife, of 42 years, Donna (Boudreau) Landry, as well as his children, Annette Landry, Bonnie (John) Duffus, both of Yarmouth, and Kyle (Lori Gill-Landry) Landry, St. Catharines, Ont.; grandchildren, Aimee Landry, Cale Duffus, Ty Duffus, Carson Duffus, Trystan Gill and Jillian Gill-Landry; great granddaughter, Aiden Morton. Also surviving are sisters, Louise, Ann and Verna, all of Melbourne; Lucille, Ontario; a brother, Arnold, Chebogue. Visitation took place from 7-9 Thursday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Cecil Parker Dodge, age 88, of Windsor, Hants County, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, in the Q.E.II, V.G. Site, Halifax. Born in Ashdale, Hants County, Nova Scotia, on September 14th, 1920, he was the son of the late Earl Frederick and Blanche Margerite (Parker) Dodge. Cecil was a member of the Hants County Branch No. 009, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor. He worked at the Hants Co-op for thirty-five years. In his earlier years, he was in the Military Police, having been posted in England. He was a member, Trustee and Elder of the Newport United Church. Cecil is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Elsie Mae Northup; sons, Earle (Sharon) Dodge, Woodville, Hants County; Paul (Judy) Dodge, Calgary, Alberta; daughters, Joan (Jim) Darnley, Toronto, Ontario; Jean (Dan) MacLeod, Musquodoboit Harbour; grandsons, Anthony, Cecil, Michael, and Jeff; granddaughters, Susan, Elsie Mae, and Jennifer; great-granddaughters, Allyssa and Cassandra; great-grandsons, Josh, Jaiden, Pierre Luc and Nate; great-great grandsons, Zachery and Seth; great-great granddaughters, Zoey, Ella, Sage, Taylia and Abigial; brothers, John (Helena) Dodge, Ottawa, Ontario; Howard (Ruby) Dodge, Bedford; sister, Muriel (George) Mills, Riverview, New Brunswick.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Edward "Eddie" Freeman Sanford, age 60, of Newport Station, Hants County. It was with heavy hearts, that the family regretted to announce the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 29, 1947, in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Albert and Hilda (Sibbley) Sanford. Eddie was a carpenter by trade and was employed with Citadel Drywall & Acoustical Ltd., Dartmouth. He had formerly worked at J. W. Lindsay Construction and B. D. Stevens Construction. Because of his love for music, Eddie played his guitar and sang with the band groups, "Uniacke Swingsters" and "Tidal Country". The groups played at dances and also volunteered their time at Dykeland Lodge, Haliburton Place, and throughout Nova Scotia. Eddie was a wonderful family man, who enjoyed doing special things with each of his grandchildren. Eddie is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Cheryl Lynn Leighton; daughters, Tammy Kehoe (Jeff Orde), Newport Station; Jodie (Devin) Whitehead, Newport Station; grandchildren, Morgan and Reagan Whitehead; Cody and Brandi Kehoe; Erika and Ben Orde; sisters, Mildred Hatchard, Union Corner; Dorothy Hatchard, Belmont; Shirley Sanford (Richard Hawboldt), Burlington; brother, Ralph (Debbie) Sanford, Brooklyn; several nieces and nephews.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued ACKER, Joyce Marie, 76, of Shelburne, formerly of Birchtown, passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., on Friday, October 17, 2008. Born in Birchtown on March 3, 1932, she was the only child of the late Murray Stillman and Hazel Pearl (Sawler) Acker. Joyce worked in many jobs during her lifetime, having been a fish plant worker, laundry worker and a flag person for the Highways. She was a friend to all and helped those in times of need. She was an avid dart player up until she went into hospital. She had a great love of animals. Her four cats, Rusty, Pee Wee, Tac and Spook were very special to her. Joyce is survived by son, Larry, Birchtown; daughter, Velda, Shelburne; grandchildren, Susan, Daniel and Jeremy and one great-grandson, Arron, all of Prince Rupert, B.C. Born in Falkland Ridge, Annapolis Co., she was the daughter of the late Percy and Elva (Stoddart) Starratt. Enid spent her working life as a school teacher. She was a member of the Martock & Windsor Forks Woman’s Institute as well as a member of the Vaughan’s United Church. She is survived by her daughter, Anne (Earl) Lyon, Middle Stewiacke; Gail Keddy, Truro (her sons, George and John); sons, Malcolm (Jean), Martock (their daughters, Beth (Kenneth), Upper Vaughans and Mandy, Rothesay, N.B.); Walter (Dawn), Sussex, N.B. (their children, Aaron and Lila); as well as great-grandchildren, Kevin, Jessica and Briana; sisters, Hazel Starratt; Ethel Veinotte; brothers, Lawrence Starratt; George (Peggy) Starratt.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued GESNER (Hillman), Eileen Alice Theresa - 88, Hillsvale, Hants Co., passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008, in Scotia Nursing Home, Beaverbank. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late William and Philomena (McGrath) Hillman. Eileen enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband in their trailer and belonged to Wally Byam Caravan Club. A favourite destination was Smith’s Cove RV Park, where many summers were spent collecting shells on the shore. She was a talented artist who had a passion for knitting, quilting, crocheting and oil painting. Eileen had a great sense of humour and shared wonderful conversations with everyone she met. Eileen’s favourite pastime was simply taking a car drive and didn’t care where she went, “as long as she was going.” She is survived by her husband, Clifford Gesner, Hillsvale; daughters, Sylvia (Fred) Russell, Admiral Rock, and Dianne (Garnet) Benedict, Windsor Forks; sons, Clifford, Toronto, Ont.; D.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued HUDSON, Lorne (Laurie) Frederick - 83 yrs, of Upper Granville, NS passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at home. Born in Middleton, he was the only child of the late Charles and Flossie (Banks) Hudson. He was a life long resident of Upper Granville. Lorne retired after 27 years of service as manager of Fundy Fertilizer. Prior to that he was a salesman for Neville Motors and manager of the Bridgetown Co-op. During his retirement he was an active gardener and enjoyed operating a fruit and vegetable stand for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, the former Marjorie Moulaison, Upper Granville; daughters, Joan Ann Hudson, Upper Granville; Janet (Robert) Todd, Bridgetown; sons, Lorne (Yvonne), Oshawa, ON; David (Cheryl), Bridgetown and Gerald (Cindy), Round Hill; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. By Laurie's request, his body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research. Interment will be held at a later date. A private family service will be held at 2 pm on Nov. 1/08 followed by visitation at 3 pm at the family home in Upper Granville.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Laird Morton Nichols - 81, Aylesford, Kings Co., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday October 18, 2008, in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Aylesford, he was a son of the late Myron and Blanch (Morton) Nichols. Laird was a business partner with his brother, Ambrose Nichols, all of their lives. They were involved with farming, construction and had rental properties. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Yvonne C.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued GOODWIN, Robertson A., of Waltham, Mass., died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Pine Knoll Nursing Center in Lexington. He was 87. Born in East Boston, Mr. Goodwin had lived in Canada before moving to Waltham in 1953. He was a shipper/receiver for the Raytheon Company in Quincy for 40 years until his retirement. Mr. Goodwin was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Waltham Lodge of Moose and enjoyed playing bingo and secret word puzzles. He was also an avid clock collector. He was the husband of the late Christine M. (McGonigle) Goodwin; the son of the late Angus and Hildred (Newell) Goodwin; and the brother of the late Herbert Goodwin, Elizabeth Goreham and Mildred Harding. He is survived by his sisters, Lydia Ross, Blanche Nickerson and Edith Atwood, all of Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia; his brothers, Clarence Goodwin of Halifax, N.S., Clinton Goodwin, Ontario, and Angus Goodwin of Cape Sable Island; his god-daughter, Mary Jo Vasquezi of Waltham; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. The funeral service was held on Monday, October 20, at the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, Waltham Mass., followed by a funeral Mass in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Saint Charles Borromeo Church, Waltham.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued Colp, Albert Raymond – passed away Friday, October 17, 2008 in Pleasant River (in the home he was born in), Queens Co., at the age of 88. He is survived by his daughters Carol Christie (James), Yarmouth, Patricia Colp, Ottawa, Susan Herman (Carlson), Pleasant River and son Donald, Halifax; grandchildren Carol’s – Steven (Kaori), Tokyo, Japan, Christopher (Valerie), Toronto, Colette, Saskatchewan and Benjamin, Tokyo; Patricia’s son – Jason (Jodie), Toronto, Donald’s – Alana and Bradley; Susan’s – Mitchell (Natalie) and Robin, Pleasant River; great-grandchildren Alexandra, Marie-Chantal & Annabelle, Toronto; Louisa, Sask.; one great-granddaughter Peyton Grace Herman, Pleasant River. Albert was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Cassidy, her twin sister, Ruth and baby grandson (Carol’s), Gregory, his brother Arnold. We lived in the magical town of Deep River, Ont. for many years where Dad was a chemist at the Atomic Energy Plant. He was a man with many interests and talents.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued MARSHALL, Warren Leonard - 84, of Bridgetown, passed away peacefully in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton, NS on October 17, 2008. Born in Clarence, Feb. 6, 1924, he was a son of the late Harry O. and Annie (Gesner) Marshall. Warren worked as a distiller at McGuiness Distillery and later was superintendent of Distilling at Acadian Distillers in Bridgetown. He was an avid hunter and bottle collector and he enjoyed a good meal and a good joke. A Gentleman to the very end. He is survived by brother Harry (Barb) Marshall of Paradise, NS and sister Edith Gould of Bedford, NS, plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife Alice, step-daughter Diane Furnell, brothers Raleigh, Lawrence and Dennis, sister Alice Baird, and niece Susan Marshall. A graveside service with burial of his ashes and those of his wife will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown on November 8 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow.  October 12 to October 18, 2008 continued VANKUREN, Aubrey, 90, Port Saxon, Shelburne County, passed away after a lengthy illness on Monday, October 13, 2008 in Naples, Florida. He was born in Rummerfield, PA, the son of Harry and Ethlyn (Howell) VanKuren. He is survived by his loving wife, Anita (Gordon) of 65 years; two daughters, Jane (Christen) Welp of The Dalles, Oregon and Barbara (Floyd) Boyce, Halifax, N.S.; two grandchildren, Mason Welp, Underwood, Washington, Melissa McKinney, Newberg, Oregon; and one great grandson, Caden Welp; sister, Helen of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother, Carlton (Nancy) of Hudson, Florida. “Van” was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Navy as a Supply Officer at the Navy Department, Washington, D.C., Portsmouth, NH, N.Y.C. and U.S. Naval Air Station in Norfolk, VA. He was employed by the IBM Corp. for 35 years, most recently in White Plains, N.J. “Van” and Anita moved to Port Saxon in 1972 from Greenwich, CT and enjoyed their summer home very much. In the early years, they would sail their boat, garden and work in the woods. They attended Port Clyde United Church and belonged to the Leisure Hour Club in Port Saxon. A memorial service will take place at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, at a later date.
