Judith Anne “Judy” Taylor – 65, of New Minas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, October 10, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of Frank Gibbons, Windsor and the late Winnifred (Benner) Gibbons. She was employed for a number of years with ACA Co-operative. Judy was a member of T.O.P.S, New Minas, enjoyed walking and had a passion for baking. She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Taylor; a daughter, Michelle (Scott) Caldwell, New Minas; two sons, Darren (Babs) Taylor, Kentville and Patrick (Shaunee) Boucher, Calgary, Alberta; three sisters, Diane Morden, Windsor; Faye (Newf) Sweeney, Brooklyn, Hants County; Wanda Gibbons, Trenton, Ontario; a brother, Larry (Lindy) Gibbons, Falmouth; an aunt, Junnie (Gordon) Ness, California; three grandchildren, Leah and Carey Boucher, Calgary; Devan Caldwell, New Minas. Judy was also loved by nine nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Virginia DeAdder officiated. Burial took place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. CLEMENTS, Alice Elizabeth – 88, Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, and formerly of Arcadia, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2008, in the villa. Born July 14, 1920 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Nazaire and Adèle (Jacquard) Doucette. Alice was a homemaker, and she was an active member of her community, having been a 25 year associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 155, Wedgeport, as well as having volunteered with Club L’Estantue in Pinkneys Point. She was an avid card player and she enjoyed quilting. Alice had a great sense of humor, and she was a loving friend to many, always bringing out the best in everyone she knew. Surviving are her children, Alvin (Susan) Clairmont, Arcadia, and Burton (Holly) Clairmont, Tusket; a daughter-in-law, Rosann, Eel Brook; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Atwood, South Ohio. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Everett Clairmont, as well as by her second husband, Abbé A. Clements; a daughter, Adrena; brothers, James, Ernest, Gilbert, Percy and Herman; a sister, Georgine Hicks. Visitation took place from 7-9 Friday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 11 from Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church, Pinkney’s Point, Father Wieslaw Papuga officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Wilson, Clifford Morris — Peacefully at the Brockville General Hospital, Garden Street Site, Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the age of 76 years. Beloved husband of Lillian Margaret Whitehead (Hood) Wilson. Loving father of Wayne Wilson (Nancy), Donnie Wilson (Rose), Donna (Roger Arcand), Dale Wilson (Ellen), Elwin Wilson (Cindy), Roger Wilson (Robin) and Dean Wilson (Debbie). Fondly remembered by many grandchildren and great grandchildren including three special granddaughters Debra, Michelle and Rebecca and by one great grandchild. Also survived by brothers Leonard (Bernice) and Lonnie (Evelyn) and by several nieces and nephews. Stepfather to Darryle Mellon (Georgina), Linda (Stan Biccum), Brian Mellon (Linda), Steven Mellon (Dorla), Cathy Bush-Quinn (Jim Quinn), Karen (Steven Morley), Michael Mellon and Gayle (Frank Englehart). Dear brother-in-law of Gerald, Clyde and David Hood and by Dorothy Shea, Carol Anne Brightman, Eileen Sanford, Hilda Stevens, Joanne Burgess and Heather McCullough. Predeceased by a sister Katherine, a brother Grant and an infant great granddaughter Mackenzie. boyd, Shirley Mae – 74, Carleton, Yarmouth Co., passed away on October 9, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on September 20, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Elsie (Smith) Allen. Shirley was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #61. She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild. She was an avid crossworder and quilter and loved her TV game shows. Surviving are her loving, caring and dedicated husband, Jack; daughter, Venie (Wade) Nickerson, Brooklyn; brothers, Junior (Mary), Bear River; Chester, Yarmouth; Lorne (Patty), Yarmouth; Sheldon (Gail), Ottawa; Roy, Yarmouth; sisters, Irene (Will) Nickerson, Yarmouth; Linda (Ivan) Morton, Yarmouth; grandchildren, Kelly (Scott) Mitchell, Yarmouth; Heather (Bobby) Crowell, South Ohio; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Elizabeth Marie “Bette” Clarke – 87, of Berwick, passed away Friday, October 10, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Lakeville, Kings County, she was the younger daughter of the late Raymond and Alena (McLean) Clarke. She was an adherent of the Anglican Church, member of the Retired Teacher’s Association, an honourary life member of the Alumni Association of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, and Central Kings Crusaders. After completing school in Woodville she received her Grade XII diploma at Kings County Academy, Kentville in 1939 and then attended Provincial Normal College, obtaining a Superior Class A licence. Her teaching career, beginning in Kings County, included schools in Halifax County, Camp Petawawa, Ontario, and Montreal. In Fort Churchill, Manitoba, she was a librarian in the Fort Churchill Library. She completed her teaching career in Somerset and District Consolidated Elementary School, Kings County, retiring in 1979. An ardent horsewoman, she was a member of the Canada and Nova Scotia Morgan Horse Clubs, a charter member of the Town and Country Riders, as well as two other trail riding associations, earning over 60 trophies and awards. From 1962 to 1992 she participated in local and provincial parades. She is survived by a granddaughter, Donna Marie Burton, Portland, Oregon, USA; a step-daughter, Elaine (Donald) Reid and four step-grandchildren, Michelle, David, Tammy and Janine; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Lamert Ogilvie, Grand View Manor, Berwick; her special Yorkshire companion, Ty Baylea . She was predeceased by her ex-husband, Gordon Burton, Kentville; a daughter, Sheila (Bobbe) Lorenz; a son, Randall Burton; a sister, Florence; a brother, Reginald. Tjaakje “Jackie” Hartenhof – It is with sadness and thankfulness to the Lord for a long and healthy life that we announce the passing away of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Tjaakje Hartenhof at the age of 95 years on October 10, 2008. Tjaakje was born in Middlestum, Holland on January 23, 1913 and married her husband, Abel in 1936. In 1952 they immigrated to Canada with their four children, Fred, Anne, Peter and Jacob and lived in the Blackfalds area of Alberta for a short time before moving to the Rocky Mountain House area. In 1965 some of the family moved to Nova Scotia where they took up farming. After the death of her husband, Abel, Tjaakje moved back to Alberta at the age of 80 to be close to her daughter Anne. She enjoyed 15 years of life in the Lacombe area with the many friends she had, especially Lena DeJong and Hilda Zuidhof and Pastor and Mrs. Sluys. Mother leaves to mourn her passing her four children, Fred (Irene) Hartenhof, London, Ontario; Anne (Evert) Weenink, Blackfalds, their children, Allan (Collette) Weenink, High River, Alberta; Linda (Sam) Swaim and their children, Lindsay and Matthew, San Antonio, Texas; Erwin (Kristina) Weenink and their children, Avery and Evan, Airdrie, Alberta; Evert (Deborah) Weenink and their children, Dillon, Jaydon and Ericka, Milton, Ontario; Peter (Kathy) Hartenhof, Kentville, their children, Richard (Tanya) Hartenhof and their children, Corey and Aaron, Coldbrook; Anna (Chris) Hutchison of Lake Paul; Janice (Joel) Balsor and their son, Dorian, Berwick; Tim (Vicki) Hartenhof and their daughter, Madeline, Coldbrook; Jacob (Helen) Hartenhof, Coldbrook, their daughter, Michelle, Calgary, Alberta. She is also survived by three sisters in the Netherlands, one brother and his wife in Wapaun, Wisconsin, one sister-in-law, Patty in Fulton, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2008 in the Kentville Christian Reformed Church, followed by a reception. Pastor Michael Veenema officiated. As per her wish, she was buried alongside her late husband. A private family interment will take place in the Berwick Cemetery. LAYTON, John Thomas "Tom" - 51, was taken from us October 11, 2008, in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Middleton. His laughing, carefree, and mischievous nature was treasured by all who were close to him. He was born in Digby, grew up in Kentville, but home to him was always Cape Breton. Born April 27, 1957, he was a son of J. Wilbert Layton and Lynette (Gillan) Layton, Kentville. He was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville; Cornwallis Chapter No. 26; R.A.M. Order of Demolay and Boy Scouts. He married at the age of 24, had a great love for his family, and was so proud of his children. Tom's extra activities were being involved and supportive in his children's lives. He began his employment at Dominion Stores, including grocery manager. Then into the trucking business, to owning his own company in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Carol (Hogg); children, Cherlyn, Wilmot; Stuart, Wolfville; and Juanita, Cold Lake, Alta.; sisters, Lynda (Kim) Thorsen, Lake Paul; Carolyn (Mike) McKenna, Truro; brother, David Layton, Halifax; nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, J. Harold and Della Layton and maternal grandparents, David and Mary Gillan-Sydney Mines, Cape Breton. By Tom's request, his body had been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research. Interment at later date. LONG, Doris Mary – 79, Clementsport / Stewiacke, it is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother on October 11, 2008 at the Annapolis Community Health Centre, in Annapolis Royal. Born in Cowansville, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late Mustapha and Doris (Julian) Ali Zibgy. As a young woman she began working at HMCS Cornwallis in the 1950’s and retired from CFB Cornwallis in the 1980’s. Doris enjoyed a good game of bingo as well as knitting and crocheting. She survived by her son, Gerry Alley and his wife Mary Anne; grandchildren Noah, and Jessica Alley all of Stewiacke. She was predeceased by her husband Darrell, sister Fatima. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie . No visitation by request. Private family burial will take place at a later date. Family flowers only. Doris was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend and she will be missed by all those who knew her. Darrell ‘Scott’ D’Arcy of St. Thomas, Ont., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday Oct. 6, 2008, in St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in his 62nd year. Dearly loved husband of Gail Doreen (Player) D’Arcy, and loved father of Carrie Anne D’Arcy and her husband Herb Goldman, and Christopher D’Arcy and his wife Melanie. Loved grandfather of Alex and Roslyn Goldman and Carmeran D’Arcy. Loved son of Webster Scott D’Arcy of St. Thomas and the late Emily (Fowler) D’Arcy. Dear brother of Isabel D’Arcy of Nova Scotia and Patrick and his wife Debra D’Arcy of Whitby. Nephews Paul Sibley and ‘little’ Darrell D’Arcy; nieces Kim Sibley, Kathie-lee Cromwell and Samantha D’Arcy. Darrell was born in Halifax, N.S., on April 11, 1947. He was in the military for 40 years. His past seven years have been with the Elgin Regiment. He was a member of Branch 41, Royal Canadian Legion. Fondly known as “Doc” and sadly missed by the members of 31 CER (Elgin Regiment).
