Students surpass fundraising goal, shave principal's pate
Students at Dr. Arthur Hines Elementary School in Summerville were challenged recently by Principal Derron Moores to raise $400 in pledges this year for the Terry Fox Run. If this goal was reached, Mr. Moores promised students he would shave his head at a school assembly.

With a student population of 131, it worked out that each student would need to raise a little over $3 in pledges. Everyone took the challenge very seriously and worked hard to reach the goal that was set.

Tim Carr, Grade 4/5 teacher at DAHS, told his class he would shave his head also if the total in pledges was $1,000.

When pledge sheets were turned in students eagerly awaited the final total, which turned out to surpass all expectations. Pledges collected by students reached a grand total of $1,978.

Staff, students and community members participated in a walk around the school's walking trail on the morning of Sept. 26. Following the walk, everyone gathered in the gymnasium to watch as Mr. Moores and Mr. Carr prepared to have their heads shaved. Students first listened as Mr. Moores talked about the reason for the fundraising and made sure it was clear students realized why someone would shave his head for this cause.

Even the youngest students were able to answer questions about Terry Fox, cancer and the relevance of someone shaving their head. Mr. Moores and Mr. Carr admirably followed through with their promise amid applause and laughter, as students looked on with huge smiles.
