There will be one new face at the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board (AVRSB) table representing Kings County schools following October 18 elections. Annapolis and Hants County seats were all filled by acclamation
Voters in school district 4 (Kings County electoral districts 1 and 2) chose Sandy Fraser over his opponent Hugh Currie by a margin of 1130 to 250 votes. The seat, vacated by Peter Goucher, represents schools in Port Williams and Canning. A retired Acadia University professor, Fraser hopes to draw on his “lifelong interest in education” to develop closer relations between the school board and Acadia’s Department of Education, and address the issue of student achievement in standardized testing.
In school district 9 (electoral district 6), Paul Spicer, a past member of the AVRSB, will return to the board as the new representative for Greenwood’s Dwight Ross Elementary School. He defeated encumbent Karleen Balsor by a three-to-one vote margin.
Jackie Foster was returned to her seat as the member for school district 7 in electoral districts 5 and 8. She will continue to represent elementary, middle and high schools in Kingston, Aylesford and Auburn in her second term.
In District 8, the only school district to field more than two candidates, incumbent Dwight Johnson held onto his seat with a comfortable margin against challengers Barry Corbin and Mike Mason. Johnson will continue to represent residents in the Town of Berwick and those in electoral districts 4 and 9.
Several Kings County members of the AVRSB were returned to their positions by acclamation: Jenny White for District 5 (the Town of Kentville and Kings County electoral district 3); Charlene Davies in school district 6 (Kings County electoral districts 10 and 11); and Lavinia Parrish-Zwicker, who represents school district 10 (the Town of Wolfville and Kings County electoral District 12).
