The membership of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities (UNSM) Towns Caucus has re-elected Kentville Mayor Dave Corkum to its executive committee.
Corkum, who was nominated by fellow council members Nola Folker-Hill and Bernie Cooper, was re-elected to the executive committee at the UNSM conference in Yarmouth last month. This is the third consecutive year Corkum has been elected to the position.
The Towns Caucus is an advocate for towns and fosters communication among town, rural and regional municipalities. It has a mandate to promote awareness of the unique challenges facing Nova Scotia towns and develops public policy that addresses common issues.
Corkum said he is not only proud that his provincial colleagues entrusted him with the role, but also that it was his council colleagues that nominated him.
“It feels good that they have faith in me,” Corkum said. “I can be a good representative not only locally, but provincially for the town.”
The Towns Caucus executive committee reviewed recently a capacity building report that highlights the inequities in roads and policing costs. The report has been forwarded to the UNSM board.
A submission to the provincial government is expected, with the intent of securing more favourable financial arrangements for towns throughout the province.
