The Port Williams Volunteer Fire Dept. (PWVFD) kicked off Fire Prevention Week with an Open House Oct. 9. The fire trucks and other equipment were on display, all compartments open, to give residents an up-close look at what it takes to fight fires. Members of the Volunteer Department were also on hand to answer questions and explain how the equipment worked. Also on display were scrapbooks and there were barbecued hot dogs available.
On Wednesday of Fire Prevention Week, firefighters were at PWES talking to students about fire safety and this year’s particularly relevant theme, “Prevent Home Fires”. The children had the opportunity to ask questions and then went outside to examine the trucks close up.
The department has a website - portwilliamsfire.org - that provides information about their members, fundraising events, fires fought and information on how to become a member.

Registration has taken place for Sparks and Brownies and many girls are interested, but unfortunately there are no leaders for either group. If you are interested in becoming a leader or helper (training will be provided), call Laura Huntley at 681-2787 or e-mail jwhuntley@eastlink.ca.
Preparing a child for their first day of school can be stressful for both parents and child. KEYSS (Kings Early Years Screening for School), a project offered by the AVRSB in partnership with the Valley Child Development Association, and supported by the Kings County Children's Foundation, is focused on making this transition easier.
The upcoming clinics will involve three-year-old children starting school in Sept. 2010 and have as their purpose building relationships between the child, family, school and various community agencies.
If you have a child who will be starting school in 2010, contact Mary Cunningham at 678-0097 or e-mail m.cunningham@ns.aliantzinc.ca to register. The Port Williams clinic date is Mon., Oct. 27.
