Full capacity shelter needs to place more cats
This fall, the Yarmouth SPCA will further its efforts to place more cats in homes as a partner shelter in the 2008 Whiskas Cat Adoption Program. The program is a fundraising and awareness initiative that aims to help find shelter cats across Canada the homes they deserve.
From September to November the makers of Whiskas are partnering with 15 shelters across Canada and will be providing each shelter with a donation of $5,000, cat adoption starter kits, a digital camera and online exposure for the shelter. The adoption starter kits will be given to Canadians who adopt a cat during the program, while supplies last, which include Whiskas wet and dry food, treats, coupons and a Cat Adoption Guide, which will help adopters ease their new cat into the home as smoothly as possible.

The Yarmouth SPCA takes in hundreds of cats every year. While they are making great strides in helping shelter cats, the shelter (at 30 cats) is at full cat capacity and they are calling on the community for help as the need is still great. Approximately 1,500 animals are admitted to the shelter every year.

“We are at full capacity and we need loving, permanent homes for our cats. Shelter cats make such wonderful, life-long pets that enrich any home through their love and affection,” says president Frieda Perry.

The Yarmouth SPCA has been helping local cats since 1900, and the need continues to grow.

In addition to encouraging adoptions, the Yarmouth SPCA also focuses on prevention. All felines that are adopted out of the shelter are spayed or neutered. New owners who adopt an un-fixed kitten must show proof of spaying or neutering at a certain age as part of the adoption agreement. By promoting responsible pet ownership, the shelter aims to reduce the number of cats in need in the future.

“The number of cats living in shelters is increasingly becoming a problem but there are ways Yarmouth residents can help by adopting, volunteering, acting as a foster home, financial contributions, and acting as responsible pet owners,” says Perry.

“We joined the Whiskas Cat Adoption Program because their goals are the same as our goals – to help educate people about the importance of cat adoption, and to get these needy animals into loving homes,” says Perry.
