The federal election campaign reached a new low over the Oct. 4-5 weekend when someone spraypainted slurs on Liberal Scott Brison’s campaign signs, one of which was on his parents’ lawn.

A person or persons unknown spraypainted ‘fag’ in bright pink on about nine of Brison’s campaign signs in the Cheverie area. Brison has acknowledged he is gay, but has never flaunted the matter.

He noted there have always been minor shenanigans surrounding election campaigns, but this occurrence is way off the mark. “If a person has any problem with me, they can call me directly,” he said. The incident “says more about the (perpetrator) than it does about me.”

Brison pointed out his parents are elderly and shouldn’t have been subjected to this sort of thing on their own property. “It was particularly aggravating for my parents,” he said.

“The incident is not reflective of the opinions of the people of Kings-Hants,” he added. “We’ve received a lot of calls from people in Kings-Hants who are as offended as I am.”

Brison said evidence has been collected and he suggested that the colour involved would also narrow the investigation. “There’s not a real call for bright pink spraypaint,” he said.

Cst. Andy Harris of the Windsor rural RCMP said the matter is still under investigation. Some evidence has been retrieved, but the public is also asked for any information that will advance the investigation.
