Sunderland triplets a first for Digby
Owen welcomes three healthy baby brothers
A year ago, Jeff and Cara Sunderland were thinking seriously about expanding their family. Their son, Owen was one and a half, and they wanted their children to be close enough together in age that they would be friends and playmates.
The Sunderlands got their wish.
At 2-1/2, Owen is now big brother to Adrian, Benjamin and Connor.
The Sunderlands’ A-B-C triplets were born Sept. 30 at IWK Health Centre with an average birth weight of more than five pounds.
Connor Arthur, the first to emerge during the C-section weighed 5 lbs 1-1/2 oz; next came Benjamin Sherman at 5 lbs 3-1/2 oz and finally there was Adrian Edward at 4 lbs 15-1/2 oz.
Their mother, Cara, went into labour at 34 weeks, which is normal for triplets, but means the babies are premature and therefore will be closely monitored before coming home to Digby. “We’ve been told Oct. 20 is the soonest any of them will be able to come home,” says proud father, Jeff.
Cara had been staying at the Halifax home of her sister in anticipation of the certain pre-mature birth.
Jeff says IWK operating rooms were very busy on Sept. 30–otherwise the C-section might have been performed before he could make the trip from Digby to Halifax. But he got there on time and was able to witness the birth of three healthy baby boys.
The babies are the first triplets to be born to a Digby couple, and certain to cause a sensation in the small town. They are grandchildren to Jane Sunderland of Moncton and Barb and Sherman Haynes of Digby.
