October 5 to October 11, 2008 Mary Winnifred Messom – 81, of New Minas, formerly of Melvern Square, passed away peacefully, Sunday, October 5, 2008 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax with her family by her bed. Born on October 4, 1927 in Melvern Square, she was the daughter of the late Charles Sumner and Ruby (Van Buskirk) Brown. Mary enjoyed times with her family and friends and also found great comfort with her faithful dog, Mac. She was an avid knitter, cross-stitcher, and loved her time spent in the kitchen. Mary was also a member of the New Minas United Baptist Church. She is survived by six sons, Marvin (Barbara), Belcher Street, Port Williams; Gordon (Marguerite), New Minas; Philip (Nancy), Bible Hill; DeWayne (Laura), Digby; Norman, Port Williams; George (Barbara), Toronto; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Harry Messom; a brother, John Brown; a great grandchild, Joshua. Mary was resting in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 and where the funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2008, Reverend Doctor Robert Knowles officiated. A reception followed in the reception room of the funeral home. A private family burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only, by request. October 5 to October 11, 2008 CUMBEN, Norman — 54 of Ardoise, Hants County, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 5, 2008, at St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke, Guysborough County. Norman was born September 22, 1954, in Grand Bank, Newfoundland, he was the son of Sarah (Cox) Cumben and the late Wilfred Cumben. Norman owned Peaceful Acres Pet Cemetery, Ardoise, for the last 14 years. He enjoyed camping and travelling, especially going back to Newfoundland, which he continued to do during his very brave four-year journey with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife the former, Ann Smith; daughter, Gail Cumben; granddaughter, Danielle, both of Three Mile Plains; sons, Sheldon and David, both of Halifax; brothers, George (Barbara) and Keith (Donna), both of Grand Bank, Newfoundland. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. There was no visitation by request. A memorial service was 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at the Grace Lutheran Church, 40 Caldwell Road, Dartmouth. The Rev. Owen Willis officiated. A private family interment will be held at a later date. October 5 to October 11, 2008 MURRAY, James Joseph "Fraser" - 79, of Yarmouth. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their father, Fraser Murray, on October 5, 2008, in Vancouver Place Seniors Residence. He went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning while surrounded at bedside by his five loving children. Fraser was born September 23, 1929, in Mulgrave, son of the late Alexander and Myrtle (Fader) Murray. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Homes (Murray); previous wife, Leona Brown (Crockett); his children, Brian (Debbie), Kathryn (Todd), Robert (Lona), Steven (Dianne), and Rachel (Geoff); eight grandchildren, Andra, Joseph (Brian), Kaitlyn, Nathan (Kathryn), Grace, Abbey, Harrison, and Adria (Rachel); and his great-grandchildren, Dillon, Jacob (Andra), Chelsea, Blake (Joseph). Fraser began his teaching career, spanning 42 years, directly out of high school. It started in a one-classroom school in Bayfield, and with the final 38 years, teaching grade five at Yarmouth Central School, Yarmouth. He was also an avid badminton player, bowler, card player (bridge, cribbage), competitive square dancer and a sport fisherman, to name a few. He could hardly wait until fishing season opened on April 1st each year. He was a member of the kinsmen club and served on the board of directors for the Kaye Nickerson Foundation. During these last several years his passion was building remote control planes, music, playing chess and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visiting hours were held Tuesday, October 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the chapel. The family celebrated his life on Wednesday, October 8 at 2:30 p.m. in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Pastor Michael Cannell officiated. Interment followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. October 5 to October 11, 2008 SMITH, Ida Mae – 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Pleasant Valley on April 28, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Emory and Mildred (Cook) Porter. Ida Mae spent her life doing many small things with a great compassion. She was a master knitter, and provided family and friends with mittens, socks and sweaters for years. She was an avid reader and loved to read her Bible. Ida loved her God and was an active member of the Zion Baptist Church. She resided her last few years at the New Beginnings Seniors Home, where she made many friends who became her extended family. She enjoyed playing cards daily with her dear friend Avis. Ida was the most gentle of souls, and her pride and joy were her two sons. Surviving are her sons Jim (Paula) Smith, Detroit; Ron (Bev) Smith, Dartmouth; grandchildren Matthew, Chicago; Steven, Sarah, Susan all of Toronto; Chris (Kerri) Sheridan, Lantz; Kristen Sheridan, Toronto; and sister-in-law Maudie Porter. She was predeceased by her husband Edgar Earle Smith; brother Kenneth; sisters Bertha Porter, Dorothy (Henry) Richardson. A special thanks to Mom’s daily caregivers, Linda and Bob Comeau, to whom we will always be grateful for the loving care and kindness shown to her. October 5 to October 11, 2008 KILLAM, Hope Mildred - 97, Tidal View Manor, passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 6, 2008. Born on July 29, 1911, in Rockville, she was a daughter of the late John and Millie (Muise) Gallagher. Hope was a member of Beacon United Church and a member of the Golden Age Club. She worked as a cook at the Lobster House and as a house mother at the nurses' residence. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Flora (Wayne) Hurdle, Victoria, B.C.; Marion Johnson, Brooklyn; daughter-in-law, Diane Killam, Bolton, Ont.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Franklyn; sons, John and Robert; brother, Douglas; son-in-law, Fred Johnson. Remains rested in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where funeral service took place Friday, October 10, at 2 p.m. in the chapel, Rev. A.D. "Bill" Newell officiated. October 5 to October 11, 2008 langille, Ernest Gordon - 86, Isaac’s Harbour, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia crossed the bridge of life into the arms of his loving Lord and Saviour on Monday, October 6, 2008 after a short battle with cancer at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Ernie was a Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, bravely serving his country faithfully during the Battle of the Atlantic and in other theatres of war. He served on the HMCS Niagara, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Sudbury, HMCS Medicine Hat, HMCSQ069 and HMCS Comox. After the war, he worked briefly on the Great Lakes, the Canadian National Railways and started a career that spanned 34 years with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Prior to his retirement, he was the Superintendent of Fish Hatcheries in Southwestern Nova Scotia. His final posting was Superintendent of the Antigonish Fish Culture Station in Fraser’s Mills, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Ernie retired to his paradise, Isaac’s Harbour, Guysborough County where he was raised as a boy. During his wonderful retirement that spanned 30 years, he was involved in community activities and fulfilled his dreams. He was heavily involved in the Royal Canadian Legion and the Masonic Lodge of Nova Scotia. Ernie was the driving force behind a new monument erected in Goldboro as a tribute to veterans of both World Wars and the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of 60-year service medal from the Royal Canadian Legion, Aries Branch 59, Antigonish. He was passionately involved in the Masonic Lodge and served as the Worshipful Master of Stormont Lodge 96, AF& AM. He was recently presented the 50-service year medal by the Grand Chapter of the Masonic Lodge of Nova Scotia. Ernie was a model father, who protected and wisely taught his children, always having their best welfare at heart. He was the youngest son of Winniefred (Levy) and Angus Langille of Isaac’s Harbour. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Natalie Langille (Burlock), his three sons Gary (Louise) Langille of Halifax, Donald (Ricky) Langille of Bridgewater and Ken in Yarmouth; his grandchildren Jordan (Halifax), Jenna (Hartford, Connecticut), Christine (Fredericton), Thea and Alexa (Halifax); and his great grandchildren Maddox and Sam (Fredericton) and Caidin and Callie (Halifax). He is also survived by his sister Beatrice Davis (Digby) and Eileen Garrett (Ontario). Funeral Services were held on Saturday, the 11th day of October at Isaac’s Harbour United Baptist Church, internment followed at the church cemetery, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiated. Visitation was held on Friday, October 10th, 2008, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, Country Harbour at which time there was a Masonic Service. There was also visitation an hour before the service at the Isaac’s Harbour United Baptist Church the next day. October 5 to October 11, 2008 Toney, Allan Bernard, 62, Cambridge Station, passed away Monday October 6, 2008 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Berwick, He was a son of Regina (Copage)Toney and the late Bernard Toney. Allan was an avid hunter, he especially enjoyed hunting in the highlands. He also enjoyed fishing, bingo, gambling and sports. He was one of the first members/creators of the Mikmaq Tracking Team. He was a member of the Valley Search and Rescue for many years. If anyone needed any help or assistance, he was there. He was a community provider with his garden. He loved his grandchildren and his dog, “Bob”. He will be sadly missed by his many family and friends. A tree will be planted in Allan’s memory at the Three Wishes Daycare, Cambridge. October 5 to October 11, 2008 MACBRIDE, Allison William - 84, of Kempt, Queens County, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2008, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Kempt he was the son of the late Maurice and Lillian (Dukeshire) MacBride. He was a veteran of WWII. Allison worked for his wife Arlene’s father driving truck and working in the woods before going to work at Kejimkujik National Park building roads and bridges. He became a Public Works Area Supervisor for the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Kempt United Baptist Church, Church Choir, Pearle Chapter #34 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mechanics Lodge #78, A.F. & A.M., and the A.L. Paterson Branch #87, of the Royal Canadian Legion, Caledonia. He enjoyed carpentry, wood working, hunting, fishing and anything to do with the outdoors. Bea was a hair dresser for many years and was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool. She enjoyed knitting and painting. October 5 to October 11, 2008 Mary “Mildred” (Gammon) Rand – 86, of Delhaven, Kings County, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Born and brought up in Medford, she was a daughter of the late Karl and Mary (Greenough) Gammon. Mildred attended Medford School, Kings County Academy, Kentville, Provincial Normal College, Truro and Dalhousie University, Halifax. She taught school in Black River, Medford, Habitant, Town Plot and Pereau. She was very proud to be the mother of her nine children and together with her husband and family, was instrumental in the development and organization of Randsland Farms Inc. She was a loyal and strong supporter of her community. She was an active member of the Pereau Baptist Church, where for over 40 years, she served as church organist. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing and was active with the Pereau Community Club, the Pereau Women’s Institute and the Lola B. Eaton Auxiliary. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis Rand-Scott (Fred Scott), Canard; Ellen (Donald) Parsons, Delhaven; Lisa (Peter) Hayes, Hillaton; six sons, Bruce (Mary), Marshall (Marilyn), Phillip (Sheryl), Paul (Julie), Lindsay (Joan) and Reg (Kim Dowe), all of Delhaven; a sister, Leah (Doug) Burrell, Kingsport; 25 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Eric; two sisters, Ruth Hawboldt and Jessie Gammon; three brothers, Hubert, Benjamin and Lewis. Born in Kentville, he was the son of the late Walter and Florence (Rashleigh) Wood. He operated his business, Dick’s Radio and Television Service in Kentville for over 30 years until his retirement. Blessed with an inquisitive and inventive mind, his interests throughout life were many and varied. He will lovingly be remembered as a master gardener, sportsman, a kind and compassionate friend, and for deep love of family and his unfailing zest for living. Dick was also a member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria (Nauss), Kentville; daughters, Christine (Terry) Rafuse, Jordan Falls; Linda (Orren) Carey, Avonport; adopted daughter, Patricia (Paul) Ritcey, Woodville; grandchildren, Kathie (Dwayne) Pemberton, Mount Denson; Aaron Carey, Kentville; Amber Carey, Middleton; Kate Walsh, Beaverbank; great grandson, Ryan Pemberton; sisters, Gwen Robbins, Coldbrook; Frances Wood, New Minas; many nieces and nephews. October 5 to October 11, 2008 CLEMENTS, Alice Elizabeth – 88, Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, and formerly of Arcadia, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2008, in the villa. Born July 14, 1920 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Nazaire and Adèle (Jacquard) Doucette. Alice was a homemaker, and she was an active member of her community, having been a 25 year associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 155, Wedgeport, as well as having volunteered with Club L’Estantue in Pinkneys Point. She was an avid card player and she enjoyed quilting. Alice had a great sense of humor, and she was a loving friend to many, always bringing out the best in everyone she knew. Surviving are her children, Alvin (Susan) Clairmont, Arcadia, and Burton (Holly) Clairmont, Tusket; a daughter-in-law, Rosann, Eel Brook; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Atwood, South Ohio. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Everett Clairmont, as well as by her second husband, Abbé A. Clements; a daughter, Adrena; brothers, James, Ernest, Gilbert, Percy and Herman; a sister, Georgine Hicks. Visitation took place from 7-9 Friday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Born in Yarmouth on September 20, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Elsie (Smith) Allen. Shirley was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #61. She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild. She was an avid crossworder and quilter and loved her TV game shows. October 5 to October 11, 2008 Deborah Jayne Carver (Fekete) – surrounded by her immediate family and after a lengthy illness, Debbie passed away on September 12, 2008 at Cambridge Hospital, Cambridge, Ontario. Born on August 4, 1956, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, she moved to Ontario after her formative years in the Valley. Survived by her husband Gary Fekete, 5 daughters, 9 grandchildren, as well by her 13 brothers and sisters. Predeceased by father Chester, mother Evelyn (Barkhouse), baby sister Darlene and brother Dale. Crematory services were held in Kitchener, Ontario. Pastoral service and burial will take place at Habitant Cemetery, N.S. on October 18, 2008 at 3:15 p.m. Eulogy at St. Michaels All Angels Anglican Church, Canning, N.S. followed by a light luncheon at 4 p.m. Goodwill offering at the church and donations on Debbie’s behalf to charities of your choice is appreciated by her family. “Rest in Peace, Debbie”

October 5 to October 11, 2008 MURRAY, James Joseph "Fraser" - 79, of Yarmouth. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their father, Fraser Murray, on October 5, 2008, in Vancouver Place Seniors Residence. He went to be with the Lord early Sunday morning while surrounded at bedside by his five loving children. Fraser was born September 23, 1929, in Mulgrave, son of the late Alexander and Myrtle (Fader) Murray. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Homes (Murray); previous wife, Leona Brown (Crockett); his children, Brian (Debbie), Kathryn (Todd), Robert (Lona), Steven (Dianne), and Rachel (Geoff); eight grandchildren, Andra, Joseph (Brian), Kaitlyn, Nathan (Kathryn), Grace, Abbey, Harrison, and Adria (Rachel); and his great-grandchildren, Dillon, Jacob (Andra), Chelsea, Blake (Joseph). Fraser began his teaching career, spanning 42 years, directly out of high school. It started in a one-classroom school in Bayfield, and with the final 38 years, teaching grade five at Yarmouth Central School, Yarmouth. He was also an avid badminton player, bowler, card player (bridge, cribbage), competitive square dancer and a sport fisherman, to name a few. He could hardly wait until fishing season opened on April 1st each year. He was a member of the kinsmen club and served on the board of directors for the Kaye Nickerson Foundation. During these last several years his passion was building remote control planes, music, playing chess and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visiting hours were held Tuesday, October 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the chapel. The family celebrated his life on Wednesday, October 8 at 2:30 p.m. in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Pastor Michael Cannell officiated. Interment followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. October 5 to October 11, 2008 SMITH, Ida Mae – 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Pleasant Valley on April 28, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Emory and Mildred (Cook) Porter. Ida Mae spent her life doing many small things with a great compassion. She was a master knitter, and provided family and friends with mittens, socks and sweaters for years. She was an avid reader and loved to read her Bible. Ida loved her God and was an active member of the Zion Baptist Church. She resided her last few years at the New Beginnings Seniors Home, where she made many friends who became her extended family. She enjoyed playing cards daily with her dear friend Avis. Ida was the most gentle of souls, and her pride and joy were her two sons. Surviving are her sons Jim (Paula) Smith, Detroit; Ron (Bev) Smith, Dartmouth; grandchildren Matthew, Chicago; Steven, Sarah, Susan all of Toronto; Chris (Kerri) Sheridan, Lantz; Kristen Sheridan, Toronto; and sister-in-law Maudie Porter. She was predeceased by her husband Edgar Earle Smith; brother Kenneth; sisters Bertha Porter, Dorothy (Henry) Richardson. A special thanks to Mom’s daily caregivers, Linda and Bob Comeau, to whom we will always be grateful for the loving care and kindness shown to her. October 5 to October 11, 2008 KILLAM, Hope Mildred - 97, Tidal View Manor, passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 6, 2008. Born on July 29, 1911, in Rockville, she was a daughter of the late John and Millie (Muise) Gallagher. Hope was a member of Beacon United Church and a member of the Golden Age Club. She worked as a cook at the Lobster House and as a house mother at the nurses' residence. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Flora (Wayne) Hurdle, Victoria, B.C.; Marion Johnson, Brooklyn; daughter-in-law, Diane Killam, Bolton, Ont.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Franklyn; sons, John and Robert; brother, Douglas; son-in-law, Fred Johnson. Remains rested in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where funeral service took place Friday, October 10, at 2 p.m. in the chapel, Rev. A.D. "Bill" Newell officiated. October 5 to October 11, 2008 langille, Ernest Gordon - 86, Isaac’s Harbour, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia crossed the bridge of life into the arms of his loving Lord and Saviour on Monday, October 6th, 2008 after a short battle with cancer at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Ernie was a Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, bravely serving his country faithfully during the Battle of the Atlantic and in other theatres of war. He served on the HMCS Niagara, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Sudbury, HMCS Medicine Hat, HMCSQ069 and HMCS Comox. After the war, he worked briefly on the Great Lakes, the Canadian National Railways and started a career that spanned 34 years with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Prior to his retirement, he was the Superintendent of Fish Hatcheries in Southwestern Nova Scotia. His final posting was Superintendent of the Antigonish Fish Culture Station in Fraser’s Mills, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Ernie retired to his paradise, Isaac’s Harbour, Guysborough County where he was raised as a boy. During his wonderful retirement that spanned 30 years, he was involved in community activities and fulfilled his dreams. He was heavily involved in the Royal Canadian Legion and the Masonic Lodge of Nova Scotia. Ernie was the driving force behind a new monument erected in Goldboro as a tribute to veterans of both World Wars and the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of 60-year service medal from the Royal Canadian Legion, Aries Branch 59, Antigonish. He was passionately involved in the Masonic Lodge and served as the Worshipful Master of Stormont Lodge 96, AF& AM. He was recently presented the 50-service year medal by the Grand Chapter of the Masonic Lodge of Nova Scotia. Ernie was a model father, who protected and wisely taught his children, always having their best welfare at heart. He was the youngest son of Winniefred (Levy) and Angus Langille of Isaac’s Harbour. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Natalie Langille (Burlock), his three sons Gary (Louise) Langille of Halifax, Donald (Ricky) Langille of Bridgewater and Ken in Yarmouth; his grandchildren Jordan (Halifax), Jenna (Hartford, Connecticut), Christine (Fredericton), Thea and Alexa (Halifax); and his great grandchildren Maddox and Sam (Fredericton) and Caidin and Callie (Halifax). He is also survived by his sister Beatrice Davis (Digby) and Eileen Garrett (Ontario). Funeral Services were held on Saturday, the 11th day of October at Isaac’s Harbour United Baptist Church, internment followed at the church cemetery, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiated. Visitation was held on Friday, October 10th, 2008, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, Country Harbour at which time there was a Masonic Service. There was also visitation an hour before the service at the Isaac’s Harbour United Baptist Church the next day. Memorial donations may be made to the Isaac’s Harbour United Baptist Church, Isaac’s Harbour, Guysborough County.
October 5 to October 11, 2008 SMITH, Ruby Susan (Stoddart), 87, of Stoneham, MA passed away in her sleep, Wednesday, October 8, 2008, after a brief illness at the Epoch Health Care Center in Melrose, MA. Born in Atwood’s Brook, Nova Scotia on October 8, 1921; she was the daughter of the late Robert G. and Lila H. (Atwood) Stoddart. Ruby moved to Massachusetts in the early fifties from Shelburne, Nova Scotia and resided in Wakefield for a number of years. She was employed as an office manager for Curley Fuel and DEKA in Wakefield. Upon her retirement, she returned to Nova Scotia and lived in the Barrington area until 2005, when she moved back to Massachusetts and took up residence in Stoneham. Ruby was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wakefield for over fifty years. She worked as an election worker for Wakefield while she was a resident there. She is survived by her sister Margaret J. (Stoddart) (Mrs. Frank Perks) of Stoneham and two sisters-in-law, Joan C. (Mrs. Blanchard K. Stoddart) of Plymouth, MA and Shirley V. (Mrs. Gordon H. Stoddart) of Melrose, MA. She is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews, 15 grandnieces and nephews and 1 great grandnephew. She was predeceased by her brothers Gordon H. Stoddart and Blanchard K. Stoddart and her sister Lillian M. (Stoddart) King. A Memorial Service will be held on October 26th at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wakefield with Rev. Peter Brown officiating. Committal of her remains will be at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in West Peabody. Arrangements under the direction of Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home of Stoneham.
