Harris pans ‘no-shows’

King-Hants NDP candidate Carol Harris says trust is an issue for the people of the riding. “Not only do we have a ‘no-show’ Conservative candidate for an election debate, but also a ‘no-show’ Liberal MP in Parliament.”

Liberal Scott Brison emphasized the “trust” factor when Conservative candidate Rosemary Segado failed to attend the Hants County candidates’ forum at the Windsor Legion Sept. 25. Harris agrees voters should be able to trust candidates to debate as part of the election process, but they should also be able to trust elected MPs to participate in Parliament as part of the democratic process.

“Time and again, Scott Brison was absent from debate and votes in the House of Commons in order to prevent an election when his party was in apparent disarray,” Harris said Sept. 26. Even when the vote was about issues Liberals vigorously supported or opposed, Brison was absent. “And he talks about trust.”

She said Stephane Dion’s Liberals missed more than 40 opportunities to defeat Stephen Harper’s agenda and his minority government. In turn, Harper used the Liberals’ fear of an election to act as if he had a majority.

“So why should the people of Kings-Hants trust Scott Brison?” Harris asked. Only New Democrats, often joining with the Bloc of Québec, spoke up for Canadians on issues for social and economic change.

“I suggest you check out ‘How’d they vote?’ www.subroutine.ca – or didn’t vote, as was far too often the case.”
