Festival celebrates aquaculture in Digby
Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry will be celebrated in Digby on Saturday, Oct. 4, during Aquaculture Harvest Festival.
The annual festival is held in one of Nova Scotia’s coastal regions that has aquaculture operations or where there is the potential to develop one, according to Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Ron Chisholm.
“This year we have chosen Digby to showcase the growing opportunities in this region.”
There are 16 aquaculture sites in Digby County. Nova Scotia's aquaculture industry is valued at about $52 million.
To recognize the aquaculture industry, festival organizers have arranged for free seafood samples, a touch tank and face painting for children, and entertainment by local musicians.
Chisholm will present a $1,000 bursary to the local high school to be awarded to a graduating student who is pursuing post-secondary studies in aquaculture or in an aquaculture-related field.
The festival takes place from 1 - 4 p.m. at Digby Centre. Admission is free.
