September 14 to September 20, 2008 MOOERS, Helen M - 85, of Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg formerly of Hillsview Acres, Middlefield, passed away peacefully in the VG Site, QE II Health Science Centre, Halifax. Born in Caledonia, Queens County, she was the daughter of the late John and Annie (Coade) Carver. Helen was known for doing crossword puzzles and gardening. She is survived by daughter Beverly (Michael) Llewellyn of Middlewood; sons: Ken and Eric (Susan), both of Courtenay, BC and Andrew (Beverley) of Petawawa, ON; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; Sisters: Pauline Wamboldt of North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia, Althea (Arnold) Rowter and Marguerite Holdright, both of Maitland Bridge. She was predeceased by her husband George; Sisters: Lurleen, May, Beulah, Jean, Dora and Zora and Brothers Kenneth and Edward. September 14 to September 20, 2008 MACDONALD THOMSEN, Anne (nee Seaborne) slipped away in her sleep in Wolfville, Nova Scotia on the morning of Sunday, September 14, 2008 in her 87th year. She will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by her husband of 30 years, Pöul Borge Thomsen and by her big sister and best friend, Noela Seaborne Harvie. She was predeceased by her parents, Muriel and Rolfe Seaborne; sister, Margaret and first husband, W. S. Kennedy Jones. Anne’s love of life, family and friends will shine forever on in her children, Hugh (Bruce), David (Cheryl), Stephen (Sherry), Elisabeth (Ian), Deborah (Harold) and Rolfe (Susan). Some of mom’s greatest treasures were her grandchildren. She recently proclaimed that she wanted to live forever just so that she could see what her grandchildren, Deindre, Cheratien, Ben, Kate, Simon, Merlin, Liam, Jack, Joel, Amy, Sarah and great grandson, Ethan would do next. Anne’s legacy is too long to be captured in one setting but she will best be remembered for her caring heart, her inquisitive mind and her accepting home - all were always open and inclusive and all who met her were welcomed and warmed by all three. In lieu of flowers and in memory of a remarkable woman, wife, mother, sister, daughter; keep your minds and hearts open, share your memories, love, life, and laughter as often as you can and strive to leave a better world behind you. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. September 14 to September 20, 2008 FOSTER, Harriett Elizabeth – 91 of Wilmot and formerly of Mosher’s Corner passed away, Sunday, September 14, 2008 in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Vernon Mines, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Harriett (Porter) Crandall. In early years, she worked along side her husband Lee, operating the family farm in Mosher’s Corner. Harriett was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by daughter Louise (Ron) Boates, Wilmot; sons George, Dartmouth and Darrell (Lois), Melvern Square. Grand children Lee, Michael, Stephen, Crystal, Denise, Eric, Cynthia, Brent and Kenneth as well as fifteen great grand children. Harriett was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband Lee; sisters Minnie Wade, Reta Keizer, Dorothy Keizer and Ida Pick; brothers Levi, Everett, Percy, Kenneth, Ernest, Russell, Walter, James and Harry, also daughter in law, Rose. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Jean Elizabeth Burgess - 98, Waterville, Kings Co., passed away Sunday September 14, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Sheffield Mills, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late William D. and Harriet (Ramsay) Burgess. After graduating from Mount Allison Ladies College she had owned and operated the Rainbow Gardens Restaurant in Bridgetown for a number of years. She was an active member of the United Church of Canada (Trinity United Church, Waterville), and was a life member of the United Church Women. She had also been a member of the Red Cross Society. Surviving are nieces, Audrey (Robert) Lewis, Blue Rocks; Arlene (Gordon) Richardson, Moncton, N.B.; Edna (Peter) Miller, Moshers Corner; Deanna (Eldon) Smith, Port Williams; nephew, David (Elizabeth) Burgess, Portuguese Cove; several grand nieces & grand nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Curtis & Oscar Burgess. Visitation for Jean was held 7-9 p.m. Thursday, September 18, in the H.C. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Hilda Elizabeth O’Connell – 89, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, September 15, 2008 at home. Born in Upper Dyke, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late James and Ethel (Reid) Schofield. In her early years, she had been employed with Dr. Shirley Bishop and later worked as the Head Housekeeper at the Cornwallis Inn and in the Dietary Department of the Valley Regional Hospital. She later operated a boarding house in Berwick and assisted in the operation of Avon Taxi in Berwick, from where she retired. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing bingo and spending time with her family and her canine friend, Heidi. She is survived by five children, Shirley (Robert) Fleet, Ecum Secum; Larry (Bonnie) Wheaton, Gaspereau; Glen Wheaton, Chester; Gloria (Bill) Townsend, New Minas; Dianne (Karl) Reeves, Kentville; a brother, Bruce (Pauline) Schofield, Greenwood; three step-children; Brad (Ruth) O’Connell, Lower Sackville; Gloria (Garth) Trennamen, Halifax; Angie (Dave) Wournell, Lower Sackville; many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Born May 18, 1924 in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Sabra Berryman. Barbara was a homemaker, and she enjoyed playing bingo. Born in North Williamston she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Addie (Gehue) Hame. She was a past member of Valley Rose Rebekka Lodge. Bertha loved baking, crafts, making quilts, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. In earlier years, she was an avid square dancer and enjoyed nature, especially bird watching. September 14 to September 20, 2008 MACLEOD (Morrison), Margaret - 89, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 in Queens Manor with family at her side. Born in Millville, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Sarah (Smith) Morrison. Margaret grew up in New Waterford and, after her marriage, lived most of her life in Sydney where she enjoyed many years skating with her husband Donnie on the rinks in Sydney. She was a former member of Trinity UCW, Whitney Pier and was an avid tarabish and bridge player. She relished time spent with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed hosting them during vacations and holidays. Surviving are her sons: Gordon (Shaune) of Liverpool, Douglas (Wilma) and Kenneth, both of Dartmouth; grandsons: Kirk, Scott, Iain, Stephan and Neil and granddaughters Maggie and Emily; great grandchildren: Rowan, Connor, Chloe, Gabriel and Tristan; special friends Mary MacNeil and Marie Cecile LeLievre as well as several nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Alexander; infant son Douglas Murdock; Sisters Christine Morrison and Mary Gadd and Brothers Roderick, Smith and Murdock. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Jeanie Douglas Holland - 96, of Wolfville, Kings County passed away September 17, 2008 in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. Born in Stellarton, N.S., she was the daughter of the late William H. and Ethel (MacFie) MacDougall. She graduated from Stellarton High School and Mount Allison University. She was a dietician in Toronto before settling in Montreal and then retiring to Wolfville in 1969. She was a member and elder of the St. Andrews United Church, Wolfville, a member of the U.C.W., and a life member of the Sir Robert Borden Chapter I.O.D.E. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. She was pre-deceased by her husband, David Henry Holland. She was also pre-deceased by her brothers, Raeburn MacDougall, William (Bill) MacDougall and her sister, Sheila Burton. She is survived by her children: Jane Anne (Stephen) Wilsack, Wolfville; David (Lisa) MacDougall, Middleton; Jeanie (George) Roberts, Plattsburgh, N.Y.; Grandchildren, Sarah Anne and Christopher Roberts, Katie, Colin, Thomas MacDougall; niece Sheila (Jim) Byrd, Florida. Born in Bridgetown, NS she was a daughter of the late Herman and Minnie (Wilson) Vidito. Thelma was a member of the Middleton Baptist Church and a member of the Middleton Contemporary Club. She loved to play cards, especially 45’s and later in life she enjoyed travelling. Thelma was a devoted mother, raising five children. She loved her family dearly, especially all her grandchildren. September 14 to September 20, 2008 dietrich, Rebecca Adams - Lt. Commander USN (Ret.), 87, passed away March 28, 2006, at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Born Dec. 28, 1918 in Dorchester, MA, she was the daughter of the late George and Eugenie (Baker) Dietrich. She was awarded a scholarship to Radcliff University. After graduation, she joined the navy, and in later years worked for the Library of Congress. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sister-in-law Bernice and brother George. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, September 26, 2:00 p.m. at Chebogue Town Point Cemetery with Rev. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Alan “Hector” McKean – 89, of Kentville, passed away Friday, September 19, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Shelburne, he was a son of the late Reverend G. Ross and Hattie (Gunn) McKean. He had been employed for many years with the Royal Bank and later was the supervisor in the Medical Records Department of the former Nova Scotia Sanatorium and Miller Hospital, Kentville, from where he retired. He volunteered in many capacities with many organizations and enjoyed traveling, gardening, photography and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Gladys Eldridge; a daughter, Suzanne McKean, Yarmouth; a sister, Isobel (Reverend William) Pope, Mount Denson; four grandchildren, Erin (Matthew) Knock, Montreal; Adam (Vanessa), Yarmouth; Alexander and Elizabeth, both of Halifax; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Baird; three brothers, Harold, Alexander and Douglas. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Gloria “Joan” Cooper – 74, of Moncton, New Brunswick, formerly of Kentville, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2008 in Moncton City Hospital. Born in Grates Cove, Newfoundland, she was a daughter of the late Abram and Maude (Snelgrove) Martin. She had been employed as a school teacher in both Newfoundland and Ontario. She also worked as an accountant with the former Marshall Motors, Kentville and Pharmasave, New Minas, from where she retired. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Kentville and was a charter member of the New Minas Lioness Club. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Beth (Danny) Peck, Moncton; two sons, Paul (Ashley), Kentville and David (Joanne), Moncton; a sister, Phyllis (Claude) Northcott, Lewisport, Newfoundland; a brother, Maxwell Martin, Upper Gullies, Newfoundland; six grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Christie, Desiree, Rebecca and Noah; four great grandchildren, Ethan, Cole, Haiden and Joel; nieces and nephews. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Arseneault, Sister Estelle - 84 years and 8 months, after 62 years of religious life, which occurred Wednesday (September 17, 2008) at the Infirmary of the Religieuses Hospitalières de Saint Joseph. Born in Dalhousie on January 25, 1924, she was the daughter of late Paul J. Arseneault and late Ella Arseneault. Besides her religious family, she is survived by: Three sisters; Antoinette O'Keefe of Moncton, NB; Patricia Bernard of Charlo, NB and Roma A. Caron of Montreal, QC. One brother; Paul-Émile of Dalhousie, NB. Several nieces and nephews. Four brothers Yvon, Léon, Roland and Félix also one sister Eva predeceased her. Sister Estelle Arseneault entered the order of R.H.S.J. in Campbellton on September 12, 1945 where she proclaimed her vows to the religious profession on September 8, 1947. Sister Estelle worked in the different hospitals and care homes of the Congregation. She worked in administration and was the general director at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Tracadie, Enfant Jesus Hospital in Caraquet and the Villa St.Joseph du Lac of Yarmouth, NS. She was Provincial Superior of the congregation R.H.S.J. Upon her retirement at La Maison Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, Sister Estelle volunteered her time as a receptionist and in the archives department. The body rested at La Maison Notre Dame de l'Assomption, 2144 Vallée Lourdes Drive, Bathurst, Friday (September 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. where a prayer vigil took place at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday (September 20, 2008) at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of La Maison Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, 2144 Vallée-Lourdes Drive, Bathurst. September 14 to September 20, 2008 FORBES, William Henry (V) - 77, Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., passed away September 18, 2008, at home. Born in Brooklyn on June 23, 1931, he was a son of the late William Henry (IV) and Doris (Pitman) Forbes. He owned a sawmill for over 35 years with his father and later was a carpenter's helper with Sherman Hattie. He enjoyed fishing and had a deep appreciation for natural beauty in the wilderness. He recently took pleasure in making some 50 cribbage boards of various woods. As part of his Scottish heritage, William enjoyed bagpipe music. He always kept an eye on the wood shed and made several trips to his camp on Robert's Island. William was a devoted Toronto Blue Jays fan and never missed a game. Surviving are loving wife, Eloise; daughter, Arlene Ann (Brian E. Nickerson), Clark's Harbour; sons, Jeffrey William, at home; Andrew Mark, Grand Prairie, Alta.; brother, Allison (Gaile) Pitman, Brooklyn; sisters, Marilyn (Don Burns), Brooklyn; Carol (Bill Holland), Red Deer, Alta.; his treasured grandchildren, Joshua William Andrew Forbes, Morgan Eloise Ann Nickerson and Mackenzie Briana Nickerson, who shared the same birthday as her grandfather. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews across Canada. September 14 to September 20, 2008 leblanc LeBLANC, Herman Louis – 89, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on November 25, 1918, in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Eugene and Madeline (Smith) LeBlanc. Herman was truck driver, a veteran of WWII, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 61, Yarmouth. He is survived by his sister, Reta LeBlanc. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother Arnold. September 14 to September 20, 2008 WALSH, Donald “Don” Frank — age 83, of Hants Border, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2008, in the Q.E.II Health Sciences Center, Infirmary Site, Halifax. Born October 25, 1924, in, Avonport, Kings County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Seymour and Clarabelle (nee: King) Walsh. Don was a lover of pets especially his dogs. He worked at Minas Basin Pulp and Power for forty-three years. Don and his wife enjoyed going to the Baptist Church together. He is survived by daughter, Mary (Joseph) Lane, Hants Border; son, Banford (Annie) Walsh, Hants Border; grandsons, Shawn and Todd Walsh; a brother, Victor Walsh, Windsor Elms Village; and his twin brother, Ronald Walsh, Lockhartville, and his wife Greta, who is at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor; sister, Erma (Clayton) Wamback, Hantsport. Besides his parents, he was predeceased his wife of 63 years, the former Minnie Jane Dalrymple, (June 27, 2008); a brother, Henry Walsh; and four sisters, Jean Starratt, Iris Whitman, Madeline Colby, and a sister, Hilda. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Friday, September 19, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 2008, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dan Jamer officiated, followed by interment at the Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. September 14 to September 20, 2008 FEVENS, Leslie Malcolm "Mac" - 89 years, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 20, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born October 12, 1918, in Overton, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late Archibald and Georgina (Killiam) Fevens. He served in the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Navy. Following the war, he worked for Dominion Stores Ltd where he served as manager in N.S. and N.B. stores for five years. He then began a lengthy career as owner/operator of a variety of retail and restaurant businesses including Milton Groceteria Ltd, The Lobster House, The Snack Place and the Snack Twin Restaurants along with the Fun Palace games room all in Yarmouth. In the early 1970s, he liquidated his Yarmouth businesses and opened the Janbrite Restaurant in Wood's Harbour and the Triple Rose Café in Berwick. The last four years prior to retiring, he was a field agent for Statistics Canada. Once retired, Les continued to enjoy cooking for himself and others and took pride in his special recipe for seafood chowder. He could often be found making a batch of some kind of jam, jelly or canned soup or preserves and took pleasure in sharing his cooking treasures with his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, loved to spar about politics and business with anyone who would accept the challenge, was a wonderful storyteller and an avid Blue Jays fan. After living in the Annapolis Valley for many years, in December 2007, he moved back to Yarmouth to be closer to his family. He is survived by brothers, Lawrence, Halifax; Archie, Yarmouth; sons, Edgar (Sandy), Loran, and Greg (Raelene), all of Yarmouth; Robert (Jennifer), Brockville, Ont.; Stan, San Diego, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Wardlow, Hugh, Ernest, Guy, and Gerry; sisters, Amelia and Nellie; son, Leslie and mother of his children, Helen (Nickerson) Fevens. Visitation took place in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, September 23 from 7-9 p.m. with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 61, Yarmouth veteran's service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service was held in Zion United Baptist Church, Yarmouth on Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev. Brian Wallace officiated. Interment in Chegoggin Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Cheggogin Cemetery Fund or the Yarmouth Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses. September 14 to September 20, 2008 Laurie E. Crouse – 48, Dartmouth, passed away at home on September 18, 2008, surrounded by his family and friends. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Pauline Crouse Cochrane and stepfather, Fred Cochrane and the late Clarke Crouse. Laurie worked in the House Keeping Dept., of The Victoria General Hospital for over 27 years. He enjoyed hanging out with his buddies, playing pool and throwing darts. He was very giving of himself as well as big hearted, always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. Lauries family meant everything to him and he spent many wonderful times camping with the kids. He is survived by his wife, Simone Jocelynn Crouse (Berube); son, Clark Nicholas; two daughters, Caitlin Nicole, and Kimberly Anne; brother, Carmen Smith; sisters, Lisa Crouse, Denise Keddy and Lorraine Chamber; as well as several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. The family did receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth from where a memorial service was held 2 p.m. Tuesday. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Red Cross Society.
