September 7 to September 13, 2008 continued GALLION, Richard Franklin, age 66 of Shelburne passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital surrounded by the people he loved most, his wife Sheila, son, Richard Jr., and sister Elizabeth. He was the son of the late James and Annabelle (Matthews) Gallion. Richard was a very community minded individual. He served as Vice President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Zone 12, was Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #63, Shelburne, President of the Thunder Bay Friendship Center. Past President of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society, Member of the Black Cultural Society of Nova Scotia. Richard took great interest in helping to recognize and establish the Black Loyalist settlers as part of Canada’s forgotten history, and was an avid believer in the rights of all individuals. His working years were as an Ontario Provincial Police Officer until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed sports events such as Baseball and golf and enjoyed watching old movies and family get-togethers. He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Hartley) Gallion, son Richard Jr. (Bonnie) of Windsor, Ontario, sisters, Gladys (Max) Russell of New Germany, N.S. Elizabeth (Everett) Cromwell of Birchtown, 2 step grandchildren, Evan and Nick, nephew Joseph (Deborah) Howard of Vancouver, great niece Megan Howard of Vancouver., and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Brenda MacIsaac and nephew David Mooney. A Celebration of Richard’s life was held on Tuesday, September 16 at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne with Pastor Deborah Hill officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. September 7 to September 13, 2008 continued Mary Cecilia Farris – Mary Cecilia Farris – 91, formerly of Kentville, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2008 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Edith (Schofield) Corbin. She was a housewife and homemaker. She enjoyed bingo, shopping and gardening, especially flowers. She had a special love and care for her grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Farris, Kentville; Joan (Frank) Martin, Huntington Point; a son, Robert (Shirley), New Minas; a half-sister, Kathleen LeBlanc, Lakeville; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; a son, Ronald; two brothers, John and Theodore. There was no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Doctor Judith Saunders officiated. A private family burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Grand View Manor. September 7 to September 13, 2008 continued B. Pauline Woodworth - 91, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away Saturday September 13, 2008, in the Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born on May 9, 1917, in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Lorimer and Florence (Haley) Woodworth. Pauline had worked for 25 years with Maritime Tel & Tel as a travelling instructress. After her retirement from MT&T, she worked part-time as a receptionist at the Western Kings Memorial Hospital, Berwick. Pauline enjoyed playing bridge and doing a variety of crafts including knitting, crocheting and chair caning. She was one of only a few people in the area who had mastered the art of chair caning and her skills were in high demand. She not only caned chairs for others, she also taught classes so that her students could cane their own chairs. Pauline was very proud of her flower gardens both at home and at her cottage in Turners Brook, where she spent a great deal of her time. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Charles Woodworth, who was killed in action in the Second World War; Roland (Joyce) & James (Mildred) Woodworth; and her beloved cat, “Muffy”. Surviving are nephews, Charles (Marianne) Woodworth, Berwick; Michael (Nancy) Woodworth, South Berwick; Robert (Jane) Woodworth, Berwick; nieces, Marie (Charles) White, Coldbrook; Marcia (Bob) Lutz, Turners Brook. Special thanks to Peggy & Eric Silver and employees at Silver’s Rest Home as well as the employees at Evergreen Home For Special Care for their excellent care. There was no visitation at the funeral home. A graveside service for Pauline was held 3 p.m. Wednesday September 17, in the Berwick Cemetery. Rev. Linda Winton officiated. September 7 to September 13, 2008 continued LEIGHTON, Ronald “Ron” Graham — age 87, of Brooklyn, Hants County, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 11, 2008, at the home of his son in Wolfville, with his beloved family by his side. Born January 13, 1921, in Wentworth Creek, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Stephen and Grace (Lowthers) Leighton. Ron was employed with Fundy Gypsum Company for many years. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas in Italy, with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. He was a member of Hants County Branch No. 009, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor. Ron enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards and with his special companion Lucky, his dog. In his earlier years, he was a coach of minor and senior softball. His love of ball continued throughout his life and the Toronto Blue Jays, have lost one of their biggest fans. Ron is survived by his son, Mike, and his wife, Elaine, and his two treasured granddaughters, Lindsay and Kristy, all of Wolfville. Ron is also survived by a brother, Lawrence (Pat) Leighton, Halifax; sister, Annie Platt, Stellarton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Stephen and Grace (Lowthers) Leighton, he was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, the former Shirley “Shirl” Swinamer (2003); sisters, Frances Leighton, Marjorie “Toots” Baxter, and Eva Redden; brothers, Roy, Burton, Norman, Carl, Victor, Ernest, Herman, and Allan Leighton. Hants County Branch No. 009, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor, held a Legion tribute at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, September 14, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, followed by visitation from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Monday, September 15th, 2008, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. September 7 to September 13, 2008 continued SALTER, Hilda Myrtle - 88, Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, formerly of Centre Burlington, passed away Thursday, September 11 in Dykeland Lodge. Born July 21, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Sherman and Lenora (McLellan) Salter in Centre Burlington where she resided until moving to Dykeland Lodge. Hilda is survived by her sister-in-law Shirley (Carman) Crowell, Centre Burlington and numerous nieces and nephews. Hilda was predeceased by her sisters Doris Mann, Florence Cunningham and brother Carl. Born with a physical limitation did not discourage her from doing anything she set her mind to. She had a great love for children, family and neighbours alike. She also enjoyed the love and companionship of many dogs and cats over the years. She was a lifelong member of the Pentecostal Women’s Auxiliary. Cremation has taken place with no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held Sunday September 14 at 2 p.m. in the J. Wilson Allen Funeral Home, Hwy. 215, Summerville, Pastor Connie Wilson officiating with burial in Centre Burlington Cemetery, Card Beach Road, Centre Burlington. September 7 to September 13, 2008 continued MANSFIELD, Virginia Grace – 71 of Garden Lots, passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, daughter and son on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Westfield, Queens County, she was the eldest daughter of the late David and Sarah Jane (Clayton) Frail. In earlier years Virginia worked at the Waterman’s Canteen in Caledonia and later was employed for 25 years at National Sea Products (High Liner Foods Inc.) where she held positions as tour guide leader, health centre attendant, Fisheries Exhibition Booth interpreter and wet fish production line worker. Virginia was a member of the Westfield United Baptist Church and later a faithful adherent of the Northwest United Baptist Church where she was a member of the choir for 25 years. She was also a member and past president of the Women’s Missionary Society. Virginia always enjoyed her duties as assistant pie cutter at the biannual pie sales at Northwest United Baptist. Virginia is survived by her husband, Denton of 49 years and best friend for 55 years; daughter Pamela (Mickey) Savory, Centre; son Blair (Carla) Lower Sackville; Brothers, Armel (Donna) Frail, Murray (Priscilla) Frail, both of Timberlea; Sisters, Lorraine (Mervyn) Colp, Newcombville, Lynn (Tom) Conway, Westfield; grandchildren, Rachael, Adam, Matthew and Amelia and many special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents David & Sarah Frail and a nephew in infancy. Family & friends shared their memories of Virginia with her family at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home in Lunenburg on Saturday, September 13. Her funeral service was held on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 1pm at the Northwest United Baptist Church. A wonderful service was conducted by Rev. Richard Moore. Evangeline Whynot was the organist. Grandson Adam sang two solo’s, accompanied by James MacDonald; “In Loving Memory” and “Country Roads”. Granddaughter, Rachael and daughter Pamela spoke a few words of remembrance during the service. The choir sang “God Will Take Care of You” and the congregational hymn was “When the Roll is Called up Yonder”. The closing music selection was by the Mansfield Family (Denton, Pamela & Blair) played from a CD, “Mansion Over the Hill Top”. Interment was held following the service at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Westfield, Queens County. Special music was sung at the graveside by Rodney Fancy who sang “Where the Roses Never Fade”. A bountiful reception was held at the North Brookfield Community Hall. Memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation, Diabetes Association, Westfield United Church, Northwest United Baptist Church or charity of choice. Card of Thanks: The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to so many caring people during this dark time in our lives.
