New court date for Drummond, Whynott
News crews came. Lawyers came. But two men charged as a result of the June 22 fight outside Digby’s Club 98 were no-shows.
Judge Jean-Louis Batiot agreed with a lawyer’s request to remand the case of Halifax policeman Adam Stewart Whynott until Nov. 17. He is charged with causing a disturbance in a public place by fighting.
William Drummond of Digby and Halifax had his case held over to the same date. He faces the same disturbance charge as well as resisting a peace officer.
On June 22, Whynott was off duty in the company of other off-duty policemen outside the downtown bar. Drummond and his friend Nathaniel Fells, who are both black, say the fight was triggered by a racial slur. They say they were chased by Digby RCMP and the off-duty officers and then Drummond was shot with a Taser.
A camera owned by the Town of Digby recorded the event. Members of the African Nova Scotian community who have viewed it say it supports Drummond and Fells’ version of the story.
Sgt. Mark Gallagher, spokesperson for the RCMP, has said that the witnesses who came forward were interviewed and the allegations of racial slurs were not supported.
