Truck hits moose in Port Joli
A motorist who hit a large mainland moose was lucky early Sept. 19 because he was driving a large vehicle.
Queens RCMP detachment member, Const. Allan Nickerson said the driver of the truck was heading east on Highway 103 in Port Joli, Queens Co. when he struck the 1,000-pound (one-half tonne) moose. “The driver was quite surprised. Luckily, he was in a large sized vehicle.”

His truck was towed away. He was uninjured but, sadly, the moose died.

Const. Nickerson said, “This is the first moose on the South Shore I’ve been involved with,” adding Department of Natural Resources officials were on the scene early and provided the weight estimate.

Natural Resources took the moose away at about 8:15 a.m.

Const. Nickerson said, “We needed a flat bed tow truck to assist with loading the moose on the DNR vehicle. It was not light.”
