Fireworks start blaze on Wal-Mart roof

New Minas firefighters had a hot situation on the roof at Wal-Mart to deal with last weekend. Chief James Redmond said his department responded to a call about a fire on the roof of the store Saturday, Sept. 13.

Redmond said someone throwing fireworks on the roof caused the fire. A spot burned through about 50 feet long by five feet wide.

In other local fire news, New Minas was called to help deal with bees inside a house in the village Saturday, Sept. 13. Redmond said firefighters helped take out the nest.

New Minas responded to a medical emergency on Russet Street Tuesday, Sept. 16.

New Minas firefighters were called to a fire on the grounds of the new Home Depot on Commercial Street currently under construction Thursday, Sept. 18, but Redmond said it turned out to be a controlled burn.

Canning firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance in the village Monday evening, Sept. 15 and responded to a tractor-trailer fire in Glenmont Tuesday morning, Sept. 16. The tractor-trailer incurred extensive damage.

Kentville firefighters responded to an electrical fire at a residence on Richard Street Friday, Sept. 12. Chief Shawn Ripley said it turned out to be nothing major, but there was a little smoke.

Kentville responded to two simultaneous burning complaints Saturday night, Sept. 13 around 8:30 p.m. One was a complaint about a brush fire on Murphy Lake Drive and the other was a complaint about a fire on Charles Street.

Kentville firefighters responded to what turned out to be a false alarm on Lovett Road in Coldbrook Monday morning, Sept. 15.

They responded also to a medical emergency on River Street Thursday, Sept. 18.

Wolfville firefighters responded to a building alarm sounding on Main Street Friday, Sept. 12 and had a call about downed wires on Main Street Saturday, Sept. 13 at 12:45 p.m. Chief Tim MacLeod said an Aliant cable was pulled down and this disrupted telephone service in the area for some customers until repairs could be made.

Wolfville firefighters responded to a call about a possible electrical fire on Bishop Avenue Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 9:26 p.m.
