Mariners take two at home
The Yarmouth Mariners defeated the Halifax Lions 6-2 Sunday night in Yarmouth to improve their early season record to 2-1. The Mariners lost their first game to Bridgewater 8-2 on Friday but won Saturday night in their Yarmouth home opener against the Dieppe Commandos by a score of 1-0.
On Sunday Steve Pearson led the Mariners with two goals and an assist while Cody Lefrancois added a goal and two assists. Michael Best collected three assists.
Lynden Proctor opened the scoring at 8:01 to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Pearson scored at 10:28 to extend the lead to 2-0. Riley Lewis (powerplay) scored at 17:50 to cut the lead to 2-1 after the first period. Jordan Scott (powerplay) scored at 9:18 to extend the lead to 3-1. Lefrancois scored at 12:34 to increase the lead to 4-1 after the second period. Pearson scored at 6:32 to widen the lead to 5-1. Stephen Popovich scored at 12:36 to make the score 5-2. Drew Melnick (powerplay) rounded out the scoring at 19:11.
Yarmouth went 2 for 8 on the powerplay while Halifax went 1 for 5.
Dallas Ungurian stopped 29 of 31 shots for the win while Daniel Stein stopped 30 of 36 shots in the loss.

Mariners Blank Commandos
On Saturday at the Mariners Centre the Yarmouth Mariners blanked the Dieppe Commandos 1-0.
Michael Best scored to only goal of the game at 7:49 of the first period with assists going to Cody Lefrancois and Mitch McLeod.
Yarmouth went 0 for 8 on the powerplay while Dieppe went 0 for 7.
Dallas Ungurian was outstanding in the Mariners goal as he stopped all 32 shots he faced for the shutout victory while Matt Cooling stopped 28 of 29 shots in the loss.
