Rash of emergencies keep firefighters busy

Wolfville firefighters were kept busy last week responding to a rash of emergencies. Chief Tim MacLeod said his department responded to a structure fire on the Ridge Road in Wolfville Ridge Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 1:19 a.m. He said the house was fully involved when firefighters arrived on the scene. The cause of the blaze had yet to be determined as of Friday afternoon, Sept. 12. The incident remains under investigation by the RCMP and the provincial Fire Marshall’s Office. Greenwich and New Minas fire departments responded in mutual aid.
Wolfville firefighters responded to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Highland Avenue Friday, Sept. 5 at 6:10 p.m. There were no injuries reported. The occupants were out when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Wolfville responded to a building alarm sounding on University Avenue Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10:30 a.m. and to a building alarm on Wickwire Avenue Sunday, Sept. 7 at 7:08 a.m.
Members responded also to a flood condition on Main Street Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. and to what MacLeod described as a minor collision involving two vehicles on Main Street Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:24 p.m.
Wolfville responded to a building alarm sounding on Harbourside Drive Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 2:18 a.m. and to a building alarm on Wickwire Avenue Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 10:11 a.m.
Wolfville responded to a two-vehicle collision involving two westbound vehicles on Highway 101 near Exit 9 Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 8:46 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene for several hours, assisting RCMP Annapolis Valley Traffic Services. MacLeod said firefighters had to utilize the “Jaws of Life” to extricate a female from one of the vehicles. Greenwich Fire Chief Randy Schofield said his department provided mutual aid in the form of stand-in assistance at the Wolfville fire hall during the emergency.

Last week was busy for Kentville firefighters as well. Kentville responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a truck and a tree in Lakeville Sunday, Sept. 7.
They responded also to an alarm sounding on Scott Drive in north Kentville Sunday, Sept. 7 and to a call about a flooded basement on Highway 12 Sunday, Sept. 7.
Kentville firefighters responded to a smoke alarm sounding in Coldbrook Sunday, Sept. 7 and to a fire alarm sounding on Main Street, Kentville Monday, Sept. 8.
Kentville had a car fire call in Steam Mill Tuesday, Sept. 9. No serious damages were reported. Members responded as well to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Webster and Aberdeen streets Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Kentville responded to a call about a person tripping and falling into a campfire on Highway 12 Wednesday, Sept. 10. The individual incurred third degree burns.
Kentville firefighters responded to a smoke condition in a duplex in north Kentville Friday, Sept. 12.
New Minas Fire Chief James Redmond said his department responded to a smoke condition in a house on Maple Avenue Saturday, Sept. 6.
New Minas firefighters responded to a single-vehicle crash on Canaan Mountain Sunday, Sept. 7. Redmond said the crash involved a stolen vehicle and whoever was involved took off.
New Minas responded to a medical emergency on Dow Road Wednesday, Sept. 10.
Canning firefighters responded to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Cavelle Avenue and North Avenue Wednesday morning, Sept. 10. Deputy Chief Scott Cruickshank said there were no injuries.
