Police on the track of tourist bureau vandals; beef up watches

Vandals have damaged the Windsor Visitors Centre for a third week in a row. Last week, a person or persons unknown entered the building an egged one wall and scattered tourist information brochures all over the floor. Staff and town officials are getting fed up.

“I never know when I come to work what kind of mess there will be for us to clean-up,” said tourist counsellor Wendy Folker. After last week’s episode, she said, it took several people working together for two hours to get the mess cleaned up and the centre operational again.

Both Windsor CAO Louis Coutinho and Hants West MLA Chuck Porter dropped in to give a hand in the clean-up process.

Community policing officer Cst. Andy Harris said the town detachment is taking the situation very seriously. “We’ve given this top priority and hope to have a result soon.”

Harris is new to the area and has only been on the job here for a few days since his transfer from Antigonish; however, he is familiar with the situation and the steps police have taken to deal with the incidents. “The matter continues to be under investigation by the RCMP.”

He has said the vandalism is likely being committed by youth from the area, but that it is hard to speculate at this time.

“We think it is likely the same crowd committing the act each time,” Harris said. “It’s something they’ve started and will likely keep at until we catch them.” This shouldn’t take long by his estimation as the town detachment is patrolling the area heavily. “We’ve stepped up the watches in the area and hope to resolve this quickly.”
