Hantsport mayor acclaimned, but nine vie for council seats
By Christy Marsters

The Hants Journal/Nova NewsNow.com

Wayne Folker has been acclimated into office for four more years as mayor in Hantsport. But nine candidates are preparing campaigns for the six council seats.

The province-wide municipal elections take place Saturday, Oct. 18.

In Hantsport, first-timers Shannon Cunningham, Harold Bulger, Bertina Evers, Jamie Simpson and Robbie Zwicker have all filed nomination papers to run for a council seat. As well, incumbents, Couns. Martin Gills, Faye Hill, Peter Murray and Donald Rockwell, have all reapplied for the councillor role.

Choosing not to re-offer for office are outgoing Couns. Margot Bureaux and Peter Johnston. However, both agreed they have enjoyed the time they served on council.

It’s a good position for anyone passionate about being involved, Coun. Bureaux said. “And it’s great for learning and understand more about municipal politics.”

However, it takes a lot of time and does make things harder on the family, Bureaux acknowledged. “As much as I’ve enjoyed it, I need to focus on my family now.”

Coun. Peter Johnston said his reasons for leaving were of a personal matter, relating to other opportunities within his profession, which, could conflict with duties on council.

Plus, 16 years in office is a good run, Johnston said. “We’ve had a productive council.”

There seems to be more interest in this election then ever and it’s nice to see new faces come out, Johnston added. “But, it’s important they know the commitment required.”

All the Hantsport election ballots will be cast at the Town Hall, 20 Main Street. Advance polls will take place Oct. 9 and Oct. 14 from noon until 8 p.m. Also, the official election date will be Oct. 18 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
