CARVER, Robert “Bob” Delane, passed away July 19, 2008 at his home in Kitimat, BC with his wife and daughter by his side. Born May 9, 1943 in Milton, NS, Bob was the eldest son of Kathleen Carver and the late Norman Hanson. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. For most of his life, Bob was employed as a welder, working at the Halifax Shipyards, NS for 10 years before getting into the mining industry. He then continued to work his way across Canada. He spent a couple years at IOC Schefferville, PQ, 4 years at McInyre Mines/Smokey River Coal, Grande Cache, AB, 17 years with Quintette Coal in Tumbler Ridge, BC and with Kemess Mines, BC since 2001. This last move brought him to Kitimat, BC on the Pacific Ocean where he loved to spend every spare moment on his boat, fishing for Salmon and Halibut, crabbing or just having a nap. He loved his family, took much pride in his job and got great satisfaction from sharing his hunting and fishing stories about the big ones that got away. Bob is survived by wife Judith (Bruhm); daughter Carley Delane, Kitimat, BC; son David Legge, Mission, BC; Mother Kathleen Carver, Bridgewater, NS; Brothers Roger (Carla), New Germany, NS, David (JoAnne), Quebec City, PQ; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made under direction of MacKay’s Funeral Services, 4626 Davis Ave, Terrace, BC. Cremation has taken place. LeBLANC, Marie Mabel, 87, of Church Point, born in Belliveau’s Cove, died Sept. 4, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Memorial service Sept. 8 in Emmanuel Baptist Church, Comeauville. Burial in St. Bernard Cemetery, St. Bernard.

Florence Roberta Best - 90, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away Monday September 1, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Somerset, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late Louis and Flora Bell (Armstrong) Best. Florence had lived in West Palm Beach, Florida for 50 years, where she had been a member of the First Baptist Church, having worked at the Church Nursery & Preschool for 20 years. Florence ran a home for troubled children for one year prior to moving home to Nova Scotia. Also while in Florida she had worked at a Ford Dealership, Palm Beach Country Club & at Sears. When returning to Nova Scotia she became a member of the Berwick Baptist Church. Florence enjoyed keeping in touch with her family and friends and loved to sew, knit, crochet and do crossword puzzles. Surviving are her daughter, Crystal Lynn (Lad) Chapman, Swaziland; grandchildren, Squire, Wyatt, Crusoe & Parker Chapman; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Best, Port Williams; Norma Best, Greenwich; nieces, Linda Best; Wenda Furlong; Janice Smith; Louise Little; Nancy Porter; Pat Ells; nephews, Greg Lowes & Donald Coggins. She will be greatly missed by her family & friends. William Harrison “Hog” States — age 80, of Hantsport, passed away suddenly Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at the home of his sister, Regina on Panuke Road, Three Mile Plains. He was born August 21, 1928, in Mount Denson, Hants County, Nova Scotia, and was the son of the late William and Sarah States. Harrison worked for 48 years at Minas Basin Pulp and Power, where he was known by his co-workers as, “Boss Hog.” He was a member of Edward’s Lodge #47, I.O.O.F. (Odd Fellows Lodge), Hantsport. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends, who were first and foremost in his life. William “Bill” Lawrence Power, 81, of Newport Corner, Hants County, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at his home. Born May 3, 1927, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late William and Alice (Edmonds) Power. He was a life long trucker, having worked with Fundy Construction for 19 years; Harbour Construction for 10 years, and retiring in 1992 from the winter works program, Department of Transportation, Brooklyn. He was also manager of Mannings Trailer Court, Newport Corner, for over 20 years. Bill enjoyed going to the camp, hunting, repairing both lawnmowers and bicycles, and spending time with his family. Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Frances Ethel Smith; daughter, Sharon (Lewis) Harvey, Brooklyn; sons, Clifford (Darlene) Power, Lower Burlington; James (Dawn) Power, Dill Road; grandchildren, Tina Harvey (Kirk Smith); William Harvey; Julie Power (Dennis Bedford); Kyle Power; Allison Power; great-grandson, Dylan Bedford; step great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kala and Carlie; sisters, Beatrice Munroe, Ellershouse; Mary (Norman) Thomas, Cogmagun; many nieces and nephews. John Kenneth Dahlgren, 74, of Kingston, passed away at home with his family at his side on Sept.3, 2008. He was the son of the late Charles and Norma (Gidney) Dahlgren. John was born in Weymouth. He joined the Canadian army in 1951 and served with the Special Forces in the Korean War. He also served in Canada and Germany. After the military, he worked for a number of years with Roscoe Construction and the last 23 years with Mid-Valley Construction. His work was his passion. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anna Dahlgren (Mullen); daughters, Joanne Hyduk (Kevin), Brampton, Ont.; Marlene Dahlgren, Mississauga, Ont.; Wanda Hatfield (Eric), Melvern Square; a son, Charles Dahlgren (Peggy), Kingston; a grandson, Robert (Gaby) Dahlgren, step-grandson, Charles Ashley; and great granddaughter, Dominique; and brothers, Donald ‘Twitty’ (Joan) Dahlgren, Weymouth; Horado ‘Bucky’ (Medora) Dahlgren, Church Point. Sherald Margaret Patterson (Silver) - 65, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away with her family at her side on Thursday September 4, 2008, at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, following a short & courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co. she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Gyneth (Silver) Silver. At the age of 17, Sherald began her teaching career in Wolfville and taught at various schools prior to raising her family. She was a devoted member of the Berwick United Church, where she had been an elder & former clerk of session. She was an avid gardener and an active volunteer in the community. Sherald enjoyed many hobbies including quilting, sewing and knitting. She was an enormously generous, kind & thoughtful person who gave freely of her time to help others. Sherald was a pillar of strength to her family & friends and an exceptional grandmother. ROBARTS, Mona Marie - 80, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Thursday, September 4, 2008, in Windsor Elms Village, Windsor, surrounded by her loving family. Born April 15, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Francis “Frank” and Amanda (Brideau) Coulombe. In her earlier years Mona was employed for a short time at the Windsor Textiles, leaving to devote her time and love to her children and husband. She had a great love for children, especially her grandchildren, as well as a great love and passion for all animals especially cats. She fed and nurtured many stray cats over the years. Mona was also known for her kind and caring manner in helping others close and dear to her. She was a past president of the Windsor Fire Department Auxiliary and past president of the Sam Slick Campers of the National Campers Association. She was, for many years, a Brown Owl (Brownie leader) in Windsor. Mona volunteered at the Windsor Daycare Centre and in her former years she participated in pottery, art and sewing classes, and playing tennis. Mona loved to garden and loved flowers and she also enjoyed traveling and going on shopping sprees, especially to the states. Mona is survived by her husband, Reginald Robarts, Windsor; son, David (Mary) Robarts, Hantsport; daughter, Roxanne (Tim Lambert) Robarts, Lapland; grandchildren, Melanie, Ottawa; Devin and Christina, both of Hantsport; brother, Hector (Beth) Coulombe, Ontario; sisters, Irene Durocher, Ottawa; Doris Coulombe, Montreal; Florine MacNeil, Windsor; many nieces and nephews; several cousins and extended family. George Frederick “Fred” Shay, Sr., age 89, of Garlands Crossing, Hants County, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born September 21, 1918, in Wentworth, Hants County, he was the son of the late George and Florence (Amy) Shay. Fred was employed with Fundy Gypsum Company for over 42 years, retiring in 1983. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the North Shore Regiment of the Canadian Army. He was a member of Hants County Branch No. 009, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor. He loved get togethers with his family, gardening, camping, cooking, spoiling his grandchildren and his dog, Yogi. Walter Sylvester Forrest, age 91, of Woodville, Hants County, passed away Thursday, September 4, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born November 16, 1916, in Newport Corner, Hants County, he was the son of the late William P. and Emily Myra (Partridge) Forrest. Walter was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Black Watch Regiment, Canadian Army, and was a member of the Hants County Branch No.009, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor. Walter was a farmer most of his life, and loved to play cards and attended weekly card games. He was a great fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, and never missed a game. He will be sadly missed by his family. Walter is survived by “the love of his life”, his wife of 67 years, Lillian Frances (Brown) Forrest; he was a special caring father of two sons, Wayne (Carol Ann) Forrest, Newport; Dana (Yvonne) Forrest, Halifax; a loving grandfather to three granddaughters, Tara (David) Lothian; Corinne (Jeff) Forrest; Rebecca Forrest; two great-grandchildren Forrest and Charlotte Lothain; sister-in-law, Margaret Forrest, Beaverbank; many nieces and nephews. MUMFORD (Blois), Norma Margaret - 84, died peacefully September 4, 2008, in Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late Alice and Harry Blois. She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy, in infancy, and brother, Duncan, who was taken in the Second World War. She graduated from Windsor Academy. Norma is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Mumford, and they recently celebrated their 64th anniversary together. Rich in family, Norma is also survived by loving children, Janet (Jon) Curry, Halifax; Ross (Stella), Richibucto N.B.; Anna (Brian) Steadman, Mount Uniacke; Grant (Cheryl), Dartmouth; Wray (Shirley), Rawdon; Dale (Wayne) Davis, Ste. Croix; Dawn, Bedford; Barrie, Glenn, and Vern (Jennifer), all of Mount Uniacke. She will be greatly missed by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Norma thought the secrets to a long marriage were love and children, and she was a very proud and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Norma was a lifelong and very active member and supporter of the United Church of Canada. She was a long-standing member of the UCW and played organ for the United Church, as well as for many other events and organizations, for over 60 years. Music was very important to Norma and together, Norma and her mother played organ for the church for over 100 years. Norma also greatly enjoyed hymn sings and her children remember singing in the choir from a young age. She was also very active in the community and belonged to many organizations and committees. In addition to being a founding member of the Mount Uniacke Home and School Association, she was one of the founding members of the Uniacke Union Church Trustee Association, along with her lifelong friend, Sadie Siroy. Patricia Irene “Pat” Thompson – 70, of Halifax, formerly of Kentville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends, Friday, September 5, 2008 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Bear River, she was the youngest daughter of the late Wilfred Laurie and Esther Jane (Riley) Thompson. She had been employed with the Canadian Red Cross for 37 years and retired in the position of Supervisor of Transport. She was a faithful member of Faith Tabernacle Church, Halifax, having been involved with the church choir, the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, a Sunday School teacher and was very active with the seniors. Pat lived her life for others, especially her family, who meant everything to her. She is survived by a sister, Marlene (Thompson) Dauphinee, Kentville; a brother, Dale (Sandy) Thompson, Edmonton, Alberta; a sister-in-law, Shirley Thompson, New Minas; best friend, Betty Robart, Halifax; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Gerald “Bud” Thompson; a sister, Dorothy Kingston. Lillian May Hines - 77, Kentville, passed away Friday September 5, 2008 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville; she was the daughter of the late Charles and Catherine (Westaver) Corkum. Lillian was a hard worker, she sold Sarah Coventry, worked for Amway, Watkins, Ann’s Restaurant, and was a homemaker. Lillian was a resident of Evergreen Home for Special Care for the last 2 yrs. She was an avid knitter, enjoyed puzzles and playing bingo. Lillian had a special love for children and animals. She will be sadly missed by her many family and friends. Surviving are daughter, Geraldine (Robert) Muise, Yarmouth; son, Wayne (Margaret), Pleasant Valley, Yarmouth Co.; brother, Gerald (Marie), Little River Harbour; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. TOWNSEND, Peter James, 37, of Shelburne, passed away September 6, 2008 at Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. Peter worked with the Municipality of Shelburne for over 15 years. He loved to tinker around and repair things for his many neighbours and friends. Peter was always seen with a smile on his face. Peter was adored by his many nieces and nephews. FAGE, Bruce Allen James, age 59, of Brookdale passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, with his three children by his side. Born in Amherst on May 12, 1949, Bruce was the second eldest child of Allen and Lillian (Babin) Fage of Brookdale. He graduated from Amherst Regional High School in 1968 and went to work for Speedy Propane. He could put his hands to most anything, but carpentry was his life's work. He was a union carpenter local 1392. He built houses throughout Amherst and Cumberland County and other constructions as far away as Halifax and Moncton. His craftsmanship shows up in the High School, the Hospital and many homes and renovations in Amherst including the construction of the chapel and the cross at Campbell's Funeral Home. Bruce and his wife, Valerie established Riverbend Realty Developments Ltd. in 1992, which resulted in a beautiful subdivision, Riverbend Drive, in Brookdale. In 1998 he constructed apartments in Brookdale which he named the Hillsideview Apartments where he resided with daughter Alisha and her family. Bruce will be remembered by all for his love for his family and friends, his great sense of humour, and his love for lobster feeds. Bruce was a loyal member of the Brookdale Hog Growers Association. Bruce is survived by his parents, Allen and Lillian; ex-wife Valerie of East Amherst; daughter Tanya Fage of Edmonton, AB; daughter Alisha Fage (Colin), three grandchildren Sydney, Serena and Savhannah of Brookdale; #1 son Jerett of East Amherst; sisters Valerie Chappell (Doug) of Minudie; Alda (Ivan) Fromm, and Norma (Bob) Milner both of Hastings; brother Lloyd (Florance) of Mill Cove, NS; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Bruce was predeceased by brother Randall William in 1966. Visitation was held on Monday, September 8, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Campbell's Funeral Home,98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906). Funeral service was held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Campbell's Chapel, Rev. Byron Corkum officiated. NAUGLER, Nellie Viola - 86, of Middleton, formerly of Nictaux South passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Cornwall, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late Jared and Lilly (Barkhouse) Barkhouse. Nellie was a waitress at Mid-Valley Motel for a number of years. She enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, pickling, tole painting, crafts and especially quilting. She loved being with family and friends and always enjoyed having people visit and share a meal. She is survived by daughters, Marion (Gordon) Foster, Nictaux South; Geraldine Naugler, Halifax; sister, Bessie (Reginald) Smith, Smith’s Cove, Digby Co.; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Sydney Naugler; sisters, Mildred, Maude, Myrtle, Dorothy, Elsie; brothers, Perley, Clinton, Cameron and Loris. SHANKEL, Kenneth Osborne - 78, of Hillsview Acres, Middlefield, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Hillsview Acres. Born in Gunning Cove, Shelburne County, he was the son of the late Hastings and Florence (Goulden) Shankel. Kenny grew up in Port Mouton and lived there for most of his life. He loved to help others in his community gathering wood and kindling, carry out mail to families, and help with errands around home. He would hang out clothes for his grandmother and help his mother bake. Kenny had a great love of animals and had a favourite dog named “Pal”. Kenny left Port Mouton and moved onto life in Dayspring at the LaHave Manor before settling into life at Hillsview Acres in June of 1982. Kenny was the longest residing resident at Hillsview Acres and knew Hillsview as his home. He kept regular contact with his family and enjoyed spending time with his nephew Alexander. He loved to have Hardy Boys novels read to him and loved to read the Bible. He helped out at Hillsview Acres by helping other residents, mailing letters and getting the paper. He loved to go on trips and walking and was known to have a tune in his head whether he be singing or humming. He is survived by his sister Dianne Clattenburg of White Point and his brother Al of Port Mouton. Funeral service was held Wednesday, September 10, 2008 in Chandlers' Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Kathryn Withers (Bent) (Fitzrandolph) Papenberg – 90, of the Wolfville Nursing Home, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008 in the home. Born in Bridgetown on April 24, 1918 and raised in Tupperville, she was a daughter of the late Frederick Vernon and Lena Maude (Withers) Bent. She graduated from Grade 12 in Bridgetown and was awarded a prize for mathematics. She had been a member and active in the choir with both St. George’s Anglican Church, Parrsboro and St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Round Hill. She was active with the Women’s Institute, and various church guilds, weaver’s guilds and garden clubs. She is survived by her second husband, John Henry Papenberg, Hamburg, New York; a daughter, M. Jane Fitzrandolph, Kentville; a step-daughter, Joyce (Pat) Dipronio, Hamburg, New York; four grandchildren, Scott (Susan) Ritchie, Centrelea; Stephen (Kim) Ritchie, Lantz; Randy Ritchie, Halifax; Amanda (Andrew) Hannam, Bridgetown; five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, J. Evans Fitzrandolph; a daughter, Margaret Anne Lecain; a son, David; a brother, Max Bent. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. Gertrude “LaVerne” Graves – 63, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, Saturday, September 6, 2008 at home. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of Gertrude (Griffin) Simpson, Port Williams and the late Ted Simpson. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, bowling, the beach and Huntington’s Point. She was a golf enthusiast, especially watching the talents of Tiger Woods and was a member of the Centreville Baptist Church where she enjoyed her extended church family. She is survived by her husband, Wayne; two daughters, Dawn (Michael) Harvey, Centreville; Cheryl Graves, Coldbrook; a son, Joshua, Coldbrook; two brothers, Lawrence (Phyllis), Spa Springs; Lowell (Karen), Hall’s Harbour; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Ronald. Cremation has taken place. Ruth Margaret Libby-Brinton – passed away September 1, 2008, at Evergreen Home for Special Care. Born in Manchester New Hampshire in 1908, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Margaret (White) Gibson. She was proud to have celebrated her 100th Birthday this past February. She is survived by her son George (Donna) Libby, Step-Daughter June (Romeo) Beloin, Step-Son Arthur (Barbara) Brinton, two Granddaughters, Shannon Libby of Dartmouth, and Jodi (Brad) Pineo of Berwick, a Grandson, Eric Libby of Gatineau Quebec, and six Great Grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Andrew Libby (1880-1956), her second husband Harold Brinton, two step-sons, David and Roger Brinton and her brother Roland Gibson. Mrs. Libby-Brinton was a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Kentville Branch and has donated her body to Medical Science. There will be a Memorial Service on October 4th at 8 p.m. in the Anglican Church in Kentville. DULONG, Alma Eugénie - 87, passed away peacefully at home, September 6, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Quinan, August 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Pierre and Odessa (Muise) Doucet. She was a mother-at-home par excellence whose fervent desire to have a large and well-educated family came true. She enjoyed immensely the many family gatherings with her 9 children accompanied throughout the years, by the growing amount of her grandchildren. Her greatest pride was in seeing her children and grandchildren’s achievements. She was an avid quilter and fullfilled her wish of making a quilt for each of her 24 grandchildren. As a devout Catholic, she was a past member of the Dame-de-Sainte-Anne, and throughout her life was involved in various church activities. She was a past member of the Quinan Seniors Club where she also served as president. PITMAN, Frederick Glenn – 72, Chegoggin, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Saturday, September 6 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born August 29, 1936 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Fred and Margie (Harris) Pitman. Glenn worked as both a meat cutter and a carpenter. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, trapping, woodworking and gardening. Surviving are his wife of nearly 44 years, Mary A. (Sinclair) Pitman, as well as his children, Vaughn, Toronto; Marilyn and Donald (Stephanie), both of Yarmouth; a granddaughter, Tylar Marie. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his only sister, Mary-Lou. Cremation has taken place, and there was no visitation by request. A private graveside service was held at Churchill Cemetery, Dayton. Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to H. M.
