August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued VanIDERSTINE (O’Brien), Marion Annie “Madge” - 77, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in 1931 in Windsor Forks, Hants Co., she was the daughter of the late George B. and Elizabeth (Urquhart) O’Brien. She was graduate of Provincial Normal College, Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing, University of Alberta, Acadia University and Dalhousie University. Her lifetime career was that of a teacher. She was a wonderful, kind and very giving person and she will be sadly missed. Being a very prepared person, Madge penned most of her own obituary. Madge is survived by sister-in-law, Helen Smiley, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; three sisters and four brothers. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There was no visitation by request. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, in Lohnes-DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Tom Henderson officiated. A reception followed in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre followed by private burial in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. Donations in memory of Madge may be made to the Huntington Society of Canada, 151 Frederick St., Suite 400, Kitchener, ON N2H 2M2, would be appreciated. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued Mitchell Adam Ells – 23, of Canning, Kings County, passed away Friday, August 29, 2008 in Sheffield Mills as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Born in Kentville, he was a son of Robert and Sandra (Reece) Ells. He had been employed with Acadia Roofing for three years and took great pride in his work, especially torching. He enjoyed playing cards, music and was an accomplished guitar player. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Habitant Branch No. 73, Canning and had a large circle of friends. While attending school, he was active in athletics, including soccer, basketball and baseball. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his partner, Penny Dykens and her two children, Reese and Gage Huntley; a sister, Laura, at home and Moncton; a brother, Justin (Amy), Toronto; maternal grandmother, Hilda Reece, Kentville; paternal grandmother, Marion Ells, Sheffield Mills; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Edgar Reece; paternal grandfather, Aubrey Laurie Ells. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2008, Reverend Doctor Robert Knowles officiated. A private family burial took place in the Jaw Bone Corner Cemetery, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued BABIN, Helen Ann (Poule) – 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 29, 2008 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born October 26, 1926 on Surettes’ Island, Yarmouth Co., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Elizabeth Amirault. Helen was known for her passion for quilting. She is survived by sons, Lawrence (Linda) Brampton, Ont.; Louis (Becky), Yarmouth Co.; daughter Beulah (Donald), Porter’s Lake. Grandchildren, Denise (Dan) Milton Ont.; Danny, Porter’s Lake; Craig and Kyle, Brampton, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Victoria and Matthew, Milton, Ont.; brother Clifford (Ada); sister Janet, Truro, NS; Marie (Gustave), and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Leo, and companion Lawrence d’Eon; a son Reggie; brothers Eddie, Jean Pierre; sisters Beatrice and Mary Blanche. Arrangements have been entrusted to Huskilson Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth, where family received friends on Monday, Sept 1st 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9pm, with prayers at 8 PM. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued Helen Venetia Halliwell (Young) – The family of Helen V. Halliwell, Sheffield Mills and Halifax is sad to announce the passing of a fine and gracious lady on August 29, 2008 at the age of 87. She kept her sense of humour, courage, and positive attitude up to the very end. After the death of her father when she was 10, her blind mother raised her and her six siblings in a happy home despite many adversities. This upbringing contributed to Mum becoming the kind and compassionate women she was. She was a private person who devoted her life to her family. Mum was a military wife who followed Dad to many postings. She was a charter member, chief story teller and financial backer of The Secret Room Club, a private club for her grandchildren. She was an adventurous spirit who left a legacy of love, much laughter and happiness to her family. She is survived by her twin daughters, Sharon (Rick) Mader, Mineville and Heather (Eugene) Martin, Sheffield Mills. She was a loving "Nannie" to grandchildren, Michele, George, Tanya, Stephen, Laura, Andrea, Caroline, and Anthony and 12 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother George Young, Bedford. She was predeceased by husband, Major George F. Halliwell, son, George (Hollie), parents, John and Isabel Young and siblings, Mary, Thomas, James, Isabel and Robert. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in St. Michael and All Angels Church, Canning, Reverend David Garrett officiated. A reception followed in the church hall. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued Saulnier, Camille Joseph, 76 - With great sadness, we announce the passing of Camille with his family at his side on August 30, 2008. He was born July 30, 1932 to Evelyn (Saulnier) & Jeremiah Saulnier in Eel Brook. He was educated in Yarmouth. He was responsible for a plebiscite held in 1962 in Yarmouth for the sale of liquor outside of the liquor store. This passed by a narrow margin after which he had to apply for a license to open a tavern. He received it & became the proprietor of the Clipper Ship, which started as a tavern in 1963, then became a beverage room & eventually a lounge. It was a landmark in downtown Yarmouth for close to 40 years closing at the end of 1999. Camille contributed to the community in many ways and especially loved being a member of the volunteer firefighters and eventually their Veterans Association, raising funds for their charities. He is survived by daughter Susan Campbell, her husband Colin, children Jesse Surette, Bethany Campbell & Mark Campbell all of Halifax; son Peter Saulnier of Cape Forchu; daughter Holly Hanf, her husband Scott of Brazil Lake, children Ryan Corporon, Adam Corporon, Taylor Corporon all of Halifax; son Shawn Saulnier, Cape Forchu his wife Aylli, daughter Michelle; great-grandchildren Mackenzie Babineau (Corporon) & Kailum Boyce-Surette. He leaves to grieve long time companion Lois Hemeon and her daughters Melanie & Sarah. He is also survived by Brother Dennis (Kay) Saulnier, Dayton, sister, Edna Saulnier, Dayton; Brother Victor Saulnier, New Brunswick. He was predeceased by his wife Shirley Munroe, infant daughter and brother J.J. Saulnier. Remains were entrusted to Sweeney’s Funeral Home for cremation. Funeral service was held Wednesday, September 3 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home chapel, Rev. A.D Bill Newell officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Born in Liverpool, he was the son of the late Charles and Norma (Robart) Jones. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued Cheatham, Elizabeth B., 82, formerly of Yarmouth County, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in Chattanooga, TN. The daughter of the late Cedric and Cecil Bower, she was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada. After completing her education in Canada, she moved to Massachusetts and graduated from Northfield School. She completed nurse’s training at Boston Children’s Hospital. A resident of Chattanooga since 1964, Elizabeth was one of the first 100 certified occupational health nurses in the country. She retired from Combustion Engineering after more than 20 years of service in the Medical Center. Elizabeth loved travel, combing the beach, baseball, gardening, and birds and never met a book she didn’t enjoy. The New York Times crossword puzzle was the highlight of her Sunday. She was a loving mother and will be greatly missed by her six children: Marjorie (Steve) Langston, Chattanooga; Susan (Pete) Munsell, Nashville; JoAnna (Dennis) Thompson, Knoxville; James Jr., Bremerton, Wa; Jennifer, Chattanooga; Jonathan (Lucrecia), Duluth, Ga. Other survivors include grandchildren James III, Bonnie, Sarah, Bryce and Lukey, sisters Ruth Bass, Grand Manan, New Brunswick and Muriel Jeffery, Oshawa, Ontario and good friend Patricia Cheatham, Charlotte, NC. Memorial contributions for new books may be made to The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library. A committal service will be held at 11:00 am on September 20, 2008 at Kemptville United Baptist Church in Kemptville, Nova Scotia.
August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued Tara Lee Elaine States-Arenburg, age 30, of New Minas, Kings County passed away suddenly Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre. She was born on April 30, 1978 in Windsor and was a daughter of Alfred & Elaine (Frank) States. She graduated from WRHS in 1996 with honors at which time she was involved with basketball & softball and won many awards. Tara Lee went back to upgrade in 1997. During her year off, she worked at Foodland in Coldbrook and then went on to NSCC and graduated with a diploma in business information technology. She worked as a legal secretary for the last five years. Tara Lee enjoyed spending time with her husband and son and family gatherings, camping, gardening, swimming and the outdoors. In her early teen years she was a member of the 4H and received many awards. She was also a member of Christ Church Anglican, Windsor. Besides her parents Tara Lee is survived by her husband Dennis; son, Dominik; brother, Jason (Michelle), Bishopville; little sis, Ashley, Mount Denson; maternal grandmother, Rovine Frank, Windsor; paternal grandmother, Muriel “Dolly” States, Mt. Denson; nieces, Alexis, Aaliyah, Moisha, Zoe, and Haley; nephews, Christian, Travis, and Lucas; many aunts and uncles; mother and father-in-law, Jim Arenburg and Mary Corcoran; her god parents, Yvonne and David Sanford, Rick Corkum and Tanya Lake. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Raymond Frank; and her paternal grandfather, Laurie States; uncle, Bradford in infancy. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued John Thomas Levings, 59, of Brighton, Digby County, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Aug. 28, 2008. Born April 13, 1949, in South Weymouth, Mass., he was the son of Wendell and Muriel (Thomas) Levings of Brighton. He was employed with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Workforce Development as an occupational health and safety officer. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Theresa’s Parish, Marshalltown. John had a passion for the outdoors and found solace in the simple pleasures of life. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who will be forever missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Patricia (Allison); children, Jason, Roxville; Allison (Mike) MacSween, Greenwood; Andrea (Tim) Cole, South Ohio; Adam, Roxville; a grandson, Logan Doucette, Ontario, and a second grandchild due to arrive in October; sisters, Carol (Paul) Lanoue, Mass.; Wendie Levings, Florida; Diane Levings, British Columbia; a brother, Robert (Marie) Levings, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Sept.1 in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Digby, with Father Keith Billard officiating. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued Mildred Florence Elliott (nee, Gardner), age 79, of Canning, Kings County, passed away Friday, August 29, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by her family. Born May 11, 1929, in Leonardville, Deere Island, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Mabel (Tewksbury) Gardner. She was a professional seamstress and had worked for Singer Sewing Machine Company, throughout the Maritimes. She had also worked for the Canadian Bible Society as a bookkeeper and store manager in Halifax. Over the years, she gave her time and talents to many Church and charitable organizations. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Rev. Waldo Elliott; her children, Ron (Marcia) Elliott, West Brooklyn Mountain; Jocelyn (Dale) Robinson, Brackley Beach, Prince Edward Island; twins, Andrew (Sandra), North Gower, Ontario, and Timothy (Lisa), Centreville; grandchildren, Christopher Elliott; Erin, Sarah and Matthew Robinson; Sam and Lila Elliott; Adam Chute, Eilish and Hanna Elliott; brother, Rev. Horace Gardner, Kentville; sister, Edna McGinty, Moncton, New Brunswick; several nieces and nephews. August 24 to August 30, 2008 continued BALCOM, Norah Primrose - 87, of Middleton passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2008 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Spa Springs, Annapolis County, on January 19, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Melbourne Parker and Florence Evelyn (Hall) Neily. She spent several years in the C.W.A.C.’s during the Second World War and served overseas as a Secret Cipher Operator. Norah was a member of St. John’s United Church, Middleton. She is survived by daughters, Deborah (Glen) Jordan, Bear Island, NB; Rebecca Balcom, Calgary, AB and Lorna Balcom, Bridgetown, NS. Son, Jim (Carmen) Balcom, Middleton; grandchildren, Megan Balcom, Nictaux and Nick (Rachael) Balcom, Fall River, NS. Sister, Marian Porter, Stillwater, Halifax County and brother, Hugh Neily, London, ON. She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm St. Clair Balcom; sister, Lorna Neily and brothers, Ronald and David Neily. Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service was held in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. In accordance with Norah’s wishes, there was no funeral service.
