Yarmouth Mariners holding Icy Knights fundraiser on Sunday
A fundraiser for the Icy Knights program is taking place Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2-6 p.m. in arena two at the Yarmouth Mariners Centre.
Icy Knights is a program the Yarmouth Junior A Mariners participate in during their hockey season. The program involves matching the hockey players with young people in the community who face mental or physical challenges.
Last year the two sides took part in a variety of activities throughout the year, including horseback riding, bowling, relay activities and much more.
Sunday's fundraiser will involve a variety of activities, including many geared towards the younger set. There will also be a large flea market.
As well, the fundraiser will give the public the opportunity to meet the Mariners, which includes new faces to year's squad.
Sunday's fundraiser follows on the heels of two exhibition games held by the Mariners over the weekend. On Friday night, the Mariners commanded play over Halifax with an 11-4 victory. On Saturday night, Yarmouth fell to Bridgewater 4-2. Bridgewater scored the winning goal with less than a minute on the clock. The visiting squad then sealed the deal scoring on Yarmouth's empty net after it had pulled its goalie.
The Yarmouth Mariners' season opener will be Saturday night, Sept. 13, at which time it will unveil its championship banner, after having won the MJAHL league Kent Cup last season.
