Motor vehicle incidents, other emergencies keep fire crews busy

A number of motor vehicle incidents and other emergencies kept local firefighters busy last week.

Greenwich Fire Chief Randy Schofield said his department responded to two motor vehicle crashes during the period between Friday afternoon, Aug. 29 and Friday afternoon, Sept. 5. The first was a collision between an SUV and a half-ton truck at the traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 1, Highway 358 and the Highway 101 Exit 11 access road in Greenwich late Friday afternoon, Aug. 29. There were no serious injuries reported.

Greenwich firefighters responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 101 Friday morning, Sept. 5. Schofield said a female in the vehicle was in hospital in serious condition Friday afternoon as a result of the crash.

Wolfville Fire Chief Tim MacLeod said his department responded to the single-vehicle rollover Friday morning as well. Firefighters assisted EHS paramedics with the extrication of the patient, who was transported to Valley Regional Hospital.

Kentville Fire Chief Shawn Ripley said his department responded to a call about a motor vehicle collision on Highway 101 Sunday night, Aug. 31, but firefighters found nothing on arrival.

Kentville firefighters responded to a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Belcher Street and Middle Dyke Road Thursday, Sept. 4 at suppertime. Ripley said there were minor injuries involved.

Kentville responded to a car fire in Coldbrook Thursday night, Sept. 4 around midnight. Ripley said the car was pretty much destroyed in the fire.

New Minas Fire Chief James Redmond said his department responded to a car fire in the parking lot at Wal-Mart Monday, Sept. 1. The car incurred significant damage.

In other local fire news, Canning Deputy Fire Chief Scott Cruickshank said their department provided lift assistance to EHS paramedics on J. Jordan Road in Canning Wednesday morning, Sept. 3.

Greenwich firefighters responded to a flood condition in a basement on Greenwich Road Wednesday night, Sept. 3.

Wolfville firefighters responded to a building alarm sounding on Wickwire Avenue Wednesday morning, Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m.

Kentville firefighters responded to a carbon monoxide (CO) detector alarm on Brooke Avenue Friday night, Aug. 29.

Kentville responded to a pellet stove fire in Coldbrook Thursday, Sept. 4 and to a power pole fire at the substation by the Valley Regional Hospital on Exhibition Street Wednesday night, Sept. 3.

Kentville responded to a garbage fire that was set by the apple orchard on Middle Dyke Road Wednesday night, Sept. 3 around 10 p.m.

New Minas firefighters responded to an alarm sounding at Staples on Commercial Street Saturday, Aug. 30.

New Minas responded to an electrical fire at an apartment on Alders Avenue Tuesday, Sept. 2. Redmond said it was not serious.

New Minas responded to a call about smoke under the bridge on the Highway 101 Exit 12 access road Friday, Sept. 5. Redmond said firefighters didn’t find anything on arrival.
