Number one in Canada
Fifteen-year-old athlete, Chelsea Whalen wrapped up an active summer by setting two records, which make her “number one” in Canada in javelin and shot put.
“I think it was a great summer, I put up some goals and I successfully achieved all of them,” Whalen stated.
Her summer began in Abbotsford, British Columbia at the track and field junior nationals July 25 – 27.
“I competed in shot put and javelin,” said Whalen. “In shot put I threw a personal best of 12.68 and I established a provincial record with that and in javelin I came seventh and I threw a personal best of 37.84.”
Next came the Legion Nationals in Quebec Aug. 6 – 12.
“I came first in javelin throwing a personal record of 45.25, which is also a provincial record and then I threw 13.01 in shot put and won that one and set a provincial record,” she continued.
Her new records make her number one in Canada in shot put and javelin, she noted.
Once that competition was complete, Whalen went to the under 23 track and field meet in Ottawa Aug. 13 – 14, when she placed fifth in shot put and third in javelin.
Whalen started Grade 11 at Liverpool Regional High School on Sept. 4.
“I’m training pretty hard now because of world youth over in Italy in July and the Canada Games next summer,” she said.
She is confident she will compete in the Canada Games and is “pretty positive about world youth.”
Whalen thanks the legion, her coach and her parents for all their support.
