Astor Theatre receives huge grants for major upgrade
A cultural landmark in Nova Scotia is getting a facelift thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The Astor Theatre, Nova Scotia’s oldest performing arts venue, will undergo interior upgrades to ensure it continues to attract quality acts for the benefit of both local patrons and visitors alike.
Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of ACOA and Gerald Keddy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of ACOA and to the Minister of International Trade, announced Sept. 4 more than $172,000 in support of the project. “For more than a century, the Astor Theatre has been a focal point of artistic and cultural activity in Liverpool,” said Minister MacKay. “Through this investment, we are strengthening a community landmark and a catalyst of economic development and tourism.

“Cultural tourism is experiencing tremendous growth in Nova Scotia and around the world,” said Parliamentary Secretary Keddy. “We are pleased to support the Astor Theatre in enhancing its ability to turn cultural resources into economic benefits -- something it has been doing for over a century.”

The interior and equipment upgrades include improvements to the washrooms, heating system, lobby, lighting, stage area, and acoustics. These upgrades will enhance the theatre experience for patrons, staff and performers alike and help draw big-ticket events to the area.

In addition to ACOA’s $172,624 investment through the Innovative Communities Fund, the Nova Scotia Department of Economic Development is also contributing $27,000 to the project.

“This is an important investment in the future of a historic, rural theatre,’’ said Angus MacIssac, Minister of Economic Development. “It fits the government’s strategy to showcase Nova Scotia’s vibrant arts culture to the world.’”

The Region of Queens Municipality is also contributing $40,000 toward the project while the Astor Theatre Society is contributing $25,148.

“Astor Theatre has demonstrated a strong commitment to the cultural community in Liverpool for many years,” said John Leefe, Mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality. “These improvements will ensure the theatre can continue generating significant tourism activity in the region by drawing larger events and more visitors.”
