White Rock news
by Pam Schofield (pamschofield@auracom.com)
Hello, everyone. Sorry I missed you last week; it has been hectic. I think everyone is the same these days, rush-rush-rush and very little time to relax. I guess I will relax now while I give you the lowdown on the community news.

The Acadia summer hockey league is coming to a close Sept. 14 and the kids have had a wonderful time. It helped to get everyone used to their skates again.

The Acadia Axemen have been very nice and helpful with the kids and it is very much appreciated. With the end of the summer league, the regular league begins. Check out a game or practice and cheer for the kids this winter. After all, it is all about having fun.

The card parties at the Black River hall continue to have a great turnout each week and everyone is having a great time. On Aug. 26, there were 12 tables in attendance.

Reg Pick won the gents’ first prize while Frank Spinney won gents’ second. Gents’ low went to Don Woodworth.

Jean Spinney won ladies’ first and Hilda Allen the ladies’ second. Jane Davison won the ladies’ low prize for the evening.

Keith Schofield won the traveler prize and the door prize went to Ken Long. Laurie Levy won the 50/50 and returned the prize to the community hall.

On Sept. 2, there were 10 tables plus one person in attendance. The traveler prize didn’t go this week. Bruce Long won the gents’ first prize while Reg Pick won the gents second. Don Woodworth won the gents’ low prize.

Elaine Woodworth won the prize for ladies’ first and ladies’ second went to Helen Schofield. Norma Wilmore won the ladies’ low prize for the evening.

Geraldine Cross won the 50/50 prize and the door prize went to Helen Hutt. I am told the card parties at the Black River hall will be coming to an end soon with the starting of the card parties in White Rock. We will let you know the dates when it is decided.

The White Rock card parties will start Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the White Rock Community Hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Bring your smile, your humour and have a wonderful night with friends every Tuesday night.

There will be a potluck supper and cake auction at the White Rock Community Hall Sept. 27 from 4:30-6 p.m. with proceeds for Les Ells’ snowboard training in Italy for the Canada Winter games. Bring one of your many tasty dishes and share the assortment of food with family and friends.

Also remember that the annual White Rock Community Auction will be coming up this fall. If you want to help out in any way, contact Diana MacLeod and she will direct you to the correct contacts. I will let you know more about this once I have the dates.

With the card parties starting, so will the community dart league. Everyone is welcome to join. Rather than watching TV, come spend time with friends and play a fun game, too.

Happy birthday wishes go out to Ralph Kelly, who celebrated Sept. 3. Denise Kennie celebrated her birthday Sept. 8 and happy anniversary to Sandy and Wayne Stevens, who celebrated Sept. 8 also.

A former resident of White Rock was home recently from Ontario to visit with her sister. I am not sure of her married name, but Corrina Arsenault was here to visit her sister Cindy and family. They had a wonderful visit and I was told that Corrina reads the community news online to help stay in touch with the community.

Get well wishes go out to Dick Weir, who is in the Kentville hospital. Dick went in the hospital Aug. 28. Kinds thoughts and friendly visits are welcome.

Our sympathies go out to the family of the late Ernie Morine who passed away last week. Our thoughts are with family and friends during this time of sorrow.

Take care everyone and remember to watch out for the school buses and the children crossing the streets.
