Una Elaine Hockey – 85, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at home. Born in Glenmont, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Sarah (Huntley) Wood. She is survived by her husband, William Frederick; sons, William Brian (Marjorie), Halifax and David Prescott (Valerie Golden), Baxter’s Harbour; daughter-in-law, Sherry Hockey, New Minas; granddaughters, Jennifer, Jillian, Janet, Sarah and Katrina and great grandson, Emery; a dear friend, Chris Gaul, Kentville. She was predeceased by a son, John Robert and sisters, Marie Violet Condon and Luta Twohig. She loved her family and friends dearly, often taking the role of second mother for the friends of her children and individuals in need. As well, she was fond of nature’s little creatures and people often asked her to take care of birds and other small animals in need of attention. She worked for many years in the scouting movement alongside her father-in-law, husband and sons. At Camelot Park, their family operated camping facility and home, she enjoyed working with the children and in particular teaching handcrafts. Her hobbies included sewing, painting, cooking and playing Scrabble. She was active in supporting the Rotary Club of Kentville as well and was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1997 because of her tangible efforts for the welfare of others. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2008, Reverend Doctor Randy Crozsman officiated. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Harold Renwick Musgrave – 91, of Kentville, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2008 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Charles and Mabel (Cameron) Musgrave. He had been employed with Canadian National Railways and retired as an engineer. He loved spending time with his wife and he enjoyed his dogs. He is survived by his wife, Jane Kalkman-Musgrave; five step-children, Judith Speelman (Anthony Remy), Calgary; Catherine Speelman, Ottawa; Teresa Speelman (Dave MacHattie), Middleton; Walter Speelman, Ottawa; Brian Speelman, Edmonton; five nieces, Mabel, Iretta, Christine, Angela and Mary; two nephews, Bart and Cecil. He was predeceased by a brother, Cecil Sr.; a step-brother, Lloyd “Babe”. WEESE, Wallace “Garry” - 71, Middleton, went to be home with his Lord Jesus on August 26, 2008. Although sad to leave his loved ones and dear friends Garry went rejoicing that his battle with cancer was finally over and that he would finally be in the home prepared for him by Jesus in Heaven. Born in Nipawin, SK to the late Wallace Harold and Muriel Velda (McConnell) Weese and born again through his faith in Jesus in 1977, Garry lived a full and happy life. He spent his public and high school years in Nipawin and attended the University of Saskatchewan. He joined the RCAF in 1955 and served most of his career as an aviator in Greenwood, NS. He proudly displayed in his office plaques from service in VP404, MP&EU, VP405, ASDU and RCAF Falconbridge on the Mid Canada Line. During his career he completed a BSc. at Acadia University as well as courses in Education and Commerce. He was a graduate of the Royal Australian Air Force Staff College in Canberra, Australia. Following his 28 years in the Canadian Forces Garry completed the first year of his Master of Divinity at Acadia Divinity College (ADC). He believed that his leading was not in a pulpit ministry but on a one-to-one ministry so he left ADC at the end of the academic year and had various careers in the intervening years until his retirement. As Regional Director for Behavioural Team, Toronto he coordinated the Life Skills Training Program for the Canadian Forces Recruit School in Cornwallis and advised the Canadian Forces Europe in life skills development for dependents. During this time he and several friends founded The Valley Vendor, a buy and sell guide, which was in operation from Windsor to Digby for a number of years before being sold to a local radio station. He later trained as a realtor and financial advisor before completing his career as Atlantic Regional Manager for the mortgage brokerage firm of Noratlantic Mortgage (later INVIS). After his conversion to Christianity Garry determined that his ministry was in assisting others who were in need. He served as a Board Member for Valley Regional Health, the Mid Valley Palliative Care, and was past chair of the Valley Care Line, Future View and Trans County Transportation. He was most active in his home church, Middleton Baptist. He taught Sunday School at all levels, had served as Chairman of the Trustees, a member of the Board of Deacons and assisted in many studies and projects within the church. Garry will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by, Kathleen (Kaye) (nee. Kempton), his devoted wife of 49 years, a daughter, Shelly (“Hutch”) Hutchinson, of Kingston, ON, son, Sean (Natasha) Weese, of Alliston, ON, grandchildren; Justin Weese, Jace Martell, Matthew Weese, Jordyn Hutchinson, and Darienne Hutchinson all of Ontario. He is also survived by his dear sister Marlene (Raymond) Yurkowski and nephews Alan (Melinda), Kevin and Brian (Karen). Cremation has taken place. By request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 3:00PM, Sunday, October 5, 2008 in the Middleton Baptist Church. Rev. Danny Smith, Rev. Don Robertson and Rev. Clyde Lowe officiating. Styntje “Christine” (VanderGraaf) Meijer – 82, formerly of Centreville, Kings County, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Hendricus and Niesje (Klein) VanderGraaf. She and her late husband, Pieter immigrated to Canada in 1952. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville and had been employed for many years at Evergreen Home for Special Care, where she later became a resident herself. REDDEN, Laurie Clarence, 84, of Pigott Lake (formerly of Bedford) passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2008, in his workshop at the family home. Born on May 23, 1924, in Martock, Hants County. Laurie was the fifth of 15 children and was the son of the late Neil and Winifred (Taylor) Redden of Martock. His early life on the family farm solidified Laurie's strong work ethic and love of working with his hands. At the age of 18, Laurie moved to Alberta where he worked for ten years before returning to Nova Scotia to establish a career as a well-respected builder, first with B.D. Stevens, then establishing L.C. Redden Ltd. before founding Redden Brothers Construction with his brothers, Reg and John. Builder of the first house in Clayton Park, Laurie was also instrumental in housing developments in Wedgewood, Clayton Park and co-founding Oakmount subdivision in Bedford. Laurie was an active community contributor, serving the Bedford Lions Club for over 40 years, receiving awards for his contributions to the building of the Bedford Lions Club, LeBrun Centre and the Lions Pool. For all his awards and acknowledgements, Laurie was best known for his love of life and his unconditional acceptance of family, friends and acquaintances. Laurie's genuine and warm welcome will be missed by many who were treated like family in Laurie and Carol's homes in Bedford, Heather Beach, Pigott Lake and Florida. WATHEN, Patricia Blair - 70, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2008, in the Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Lunenburg, Lunenburg County, she was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Blair) Crouse. She worked a number of years for the Lunenburg and Liverpool Branch’s of the Bank of Montreal. Pat was a charter member, former treasurer and an honorary member of the Liverpool Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary having served for more than 28 years. She was also a member of the Seniors Activity Club, of Queens County and the Queens County C.B. Club. She is survived by her daughter Lynn (Derrick) Ozon of Lunenburg; grandchildren Douglas and Blair. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas. A. Reagh “Ray” Whitman – 82, of New Minas, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Round Hill, Annapolis County, he was a son of the late William and Louise (Williams) Whitman. He spent nine years serving with the Canadian Armed Forces and later made his career in driving. He drove for the Coke plant in Bridgetown, Farmers Ice Cream in Halifax and for 23 years with the Chronicle Herald, delivering newspapers in bulk between Halifax and Middleton. Following his career in bulk newspaper delivery, he continued with the Chronicle Herald, looking after home delivery services throughout Kings County, retiring due to ill health at the age of 71. Ray was well accepted and loved by many and was also known as “Grampy Ray” to many young people in the community. In his earlier years enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and gardening. In recent years, his favourite pastime was to go for a coffee at the A&W and chat with friends. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Dorothy Ramey; two daughters, Diane (Gary) Yetman, Truro and Judy (Alan) Bent, Aylesford; a son, Jeff (Karen), Kentville; a son-in-law, Peter McKinnon, Halifax; a brother, Kirk (June), Round Hill; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Heather McKinnon; two brothers, Rufus and Ira. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by family request.
