August 24 to August 30, 2008 GOLDRING, Jean Dorothea - of Milton Highlands, Yarmouth, was born on Jersey in the Channel Islands on 10 September 1925. She died after a short illness at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Sunday, 24 August 2008. She was the daughter of the Rev. Richard Michael Rycroft and Evelyn Maud (Driscoll). Jean grew up in Devonshire, England, first at Gidleigh on the edge of Dartmoor and then in Bideford on the Bristol Channel, where she acquired the love of nature and of the seashore which lasted throughout her life. The Second World War set Jean’s life on new paths. In 1943 she joined the Royal Marines branch of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, and while serving with the Wrens in Hampshire she met and married Lieut. Charles S. Goldring of the Royal Canadian Artillery. She received her first glimpse of Canada on 28 June 1946 when the RMS Aquitania disembarked hundreds of war brides in Halifax. For Jean, this led to two years on a fruit farm near Niagara Falls, followed by the wandering life of an Army family in Manitoba and in Yarmouth County between 1948 and 1965. When Charlie retired in 1965, they continued to raise their family in Tusket. During almost half a century in Tusket and Yarmouth, Jean found her place in the community through service as a Cub leader, as an enthusiastic volunteer with any group her children joined, as a piano teacher and as leader of children’s choirs at Ste. Anne du Ruisseau and St. Ambrose Cathedral. She cultivated rock plants for sale from her beautiful garden in Tusket. After moving to Yarmouth, she was active in the parish of Notre Dame de Fatima, and took Communion to the elderly. Jean belonged to the Yarmouth Duplicate Bridge Club, and remained an enthusiastic bridge player until her death. Jean was predeceased by husband Charles and their third son, Hugh. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth of London, England, and by seven children and ten grandchildren: Paul (Ryoko Mine), Philip (Marianne McLean), Nicholas, Hilary, Stephen, Christopher (Debra Truby) and Felicity (Kay Shore). Her grandchildren remember her with love: Matthew and Nathan of Yarmouth; Dmitri (Sean Kormilo), Hugh, Alexander and Colin of Ottawa; and Simon, Adam, Samantha and Thomas of Calgary. Funeral arrangements were made through H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visitation took place from 7 to 9 Monday, with prayers at 8 PM. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 AM, from St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth, on August 26th, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment of ashes will take place in the Cemetery of St. John on the Humber (Denison Family Cemetery), Toronto. Friends are encouraged to make a donation in Jean’s name to the Canadian Jesuit Missions, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of their own choice.
