The Acadia Community Sustainable Farm hosted its first workshop last week. Local gardeners Fred Chipman of Wolfville and Rupert Jannasch of Hants Co. shared some of their experience and offered advice on how to grow the best tomato in the Valley.

The Aug. 27 open house was essentially a question and answer session. Student organizer Alex Redfield said it was also an opportunity for community members to tour the new gardens south of the arena.

Redfield said that garden produce has been sold to a cafeteria at Acadia and more is ripening. Plans are to continue work on a greenhouse and a cold frame.

He noted that work parties are going to be scheduled for September. Donations of old lumber and gardening tools are appreciated.

“By taking green waste from the cafeteria and composting,” Redfield noted, “we can cut out some of Acadia’s trips to the landfill and start making our own super fertilizer.”
