SWINIMER, James Avard “Jim” - 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 11, 2008 in the Veterans’ Unit, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born on January 14, 1922 in Upper Vaughan, Hants Co., to the late James Henry and Harriett Amanda (Pulsifer) Swinimer. He rushed to join the war when he was 17 years old and served his country proudly in conflicts in Italy with the artillery. While in Scotland on R&R he met his wife, Phillis Wallace. Once returning home he worked as a skilled tradesperson for many years in the Halifax Metro area. He was a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Scotia Branch No. 25, Halifax. Jim established, owned and operated Otterbrook Kennel Club at his home and successfully hosted numerous club field trials for many years. Many of Jim’s championship beagles were sold as far away as the United States, Quebec and Ontario as well as the Maritimes. He traveled extensively with his dogs and always came home with a ribbon. He was a true sportsman who spent many hours each and every day running his dogs in the woods, hunting and enjoying the outdoors. Jim is survived by his former wife, Phillis Wallace; and rejoicing in his life are his children, Janet (Barry) Brush, Renfrew, Ontario; Phillis (Leaon) Zinck, Kingston, N.S.; and John Swinimer, Mill Cove, N.S.; grandchildren, Kathleen, Kimberlee Ann, Barry, Scott, Lee Anne, James “Jimmy”, Holly, Emily, John Daniel, Steven, Heather, and nine great grandchildren, as well as all his wonderful nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Alexander Frederick “Sandy” Swinimer; sisters, Edith Redmond, Mary Lindblad, Ella Kellcher, Cora Ford and Ida Cochrane. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There was no visitation by request. The Royal Canadian Legion, Hants Co. Branch No. 009, Windsor held a tribute service, followed by the funeral service all at 2 p.m., on Thursday, August 14 in the Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Tom Henderson officiated. A reception followed in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre. Interment will be held at a later date. Family flowers only by request. WHITE, Jessie Winnifred, 91, Shelburne, passed away peacefully August 10, 2008 at Roseway Manor, Shelburne, N.S. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born in Garnish, Fortune Bay, NFLD July 11, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Wilson and Charlotte Grandy. She was a good mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved to travel and go out on Sunday outings with her family. She loved her bingo and rarely missed a night until she was unable to attend anymore. She is survived by a son Kenneth and wife Jenny (nee Besaw), Whitehorse, Yukon, daughters Gloria and husband Carl DeChamp, Shelburne, N.S., Diane (nee Grandy) and husband Mike Geraghty, Garnish, NFLD and niece Miriam Jane Matthews (nee Grandy) Grand Bank NFLD. She had 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Ernest, brother Reginald and sister Pearl. Cremation took place under the direction of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne, N.S. with a private service to follow at a later date for family members. Final resting place will be in Garnish NFLD.

Marlene Freda Joudrey - 73, Kentville formerly of New Minas, passed away Tuesday August 12, 2008 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Beaverbank, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Cecila (Lively) Grove. Marlene was a very loving and caring person who loved people and loved to have fun. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, bingo, painting and scratch tickets. She always took part in many of the activities in Evergreen. She will be sadly missed by her many family and friends. Marlene is survived by her sons, St. Clair (Stella), Blue Mountain, Carl, Ottawa; daughters, May (Mitch) Crocker, Hantsport, Phyllis (Andy) Weir, White Rock; brothers, Edward (Gertrude), Beaverbank, Leonard, River John, Bruce (Elaine) New Minas; sisters, Martina (Johnny) Boyd, Windsor; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Marlene was predeceased by her husband, Mailen Joudrey; sons, Ivan and Perry; daughter, Theresa and sister, Linda. Visitation for Mrs. Joudrey was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday August 14 from the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville (902-678-2151) where a funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday August 15. Chaplain Jim Norton officiated assisted by Chaplain Mary-Ann Doherty-Fleet. Interment took place in St. James Anglican Cemetery, Aaldersville. ROSS, Susan “Peggy”, age 87, Blanche, died August 13, 2008 in the Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. Born in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Levina (Carey) Baltzer. Peggy was a graduate of the Aberdeen School of Nursing, New Glasgow, she was also a graduate of McGill University of Montreal, with a degree in Public Health. She was an obstetrical instructor in Montreal and Toronto. Later with her husband, Joseph, they were engaged in medical work with the Cree Indians in Northern Manitoba and the Inui Eskimos of Baffin Island and Ungava Bay. Peggy was very devoted to nursing and her skill with children and baby clinics were greatly respected. She loved children and was a very kind and gentle person, and her whole life was spent caring for other people. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joseph; son, George (Lisa); grandson, Nathan, Calgary, Alta.; sister, Katherine (Kenneth) Hird, Kentville; brother, Gerald, Hamilton, Ont.; sister-in-law, Alva Jean (Gordon) Jones, Niagara Falls, Ont.; namesake Susan Hird, Kentville. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Lavina Baltzer, and Flossie Baltzer, the only mother she ever knew. She was also predeceased by brothers, Gearge and Murray Baltzer. Funeral was held August 16 at Cape Negro Church. Father Mathew Sponagle officiated. Interment was in Seaview Cemetery in the Ross family plot. FLANNIGAN, Elsie Mae - 81, Roseway Manor, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., formerly of Port Mouton, Queen’s Co., passed away August 13, 2008 in Roseway Manor. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mary (Bugden) Milbury. Elsie liked to play bingo and enjoyed knitting. She is survived by son, William Thorburne (Diane), Dartmouth; daughters, Marie McDonald, Liverpool, Sandra Parnell (Allen), Liverpool, Carol Roberts, Shelburne; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Douglas Thorburne, second husband, John Flannigan; son, Charles and sister, Marie Hunter. A graveside memorial service took place Monday, August 18, 2008 in Milton Cemetery, Queen’s Co. with Pastor Peter Anthony officiating. SMITH, Yvonne Elizabeth - 81, of Middle Musquodoboit, formerly of Hunt’s Point, Queens County, NS, passed away on August 14, 2008 at Colchester Regional Hospital. Born in Liverpool, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Albertina (Winters) Goulden. Vonnie will be remembered for her remarkable wit and snappy blue eyes. She is survived by her son Wayne (Rosemary) of Sudbury, ON; daughters: Jane Smith-Clattenburg (Murray Cluett) of Brooklyn, Wendy (Clyde) MacAdams of Port Joli, Anne (Thom) Dillman of Middle Musquodoboit; grandchildren: Sarah, Shayne and Sheila Smith, David and Heidi Clattenburg, Matthew and Meghan MacAdams, Chad and Keegan Dillman; great grandchildren: Keiran Clattenburg and Lochlan Jefferson. She was predeceased by her husband Aubrey and brother Cecil. Arrangements are under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. WYMAN, Ada May – 90, Yarmouth, passed away on August 14, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on May 15, 1918 in Port Maitland, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Annie (Denton) Smith. Ada worked as a waitress in Halifax for 15 years and owned and operated four boarding houses in the Halifax region. She was an adherent to the Beaver River Baptist Church. She was a great flower gardener and farmer. Surviving are sister, Alberta Smith, Nakile Home for Special Care, Glenwood, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother, Leonard Smith and sister, Thelma Smith. Remains rested in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth where visiting hours took place Sunday, August 17 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service took place Monday, August 18 at 11 a.m., Rev. Robert Baker officiated. Interment followed in Cedar Lake Cemetery, Digby County. Memorial donations may be made to the Yarmouth Food Bank, Canadian Cancer Society, or to a charity of choice. GALLEY, Gladys Evelyn - 85, Windsor, Hants Co. We wish to announce the passing of Gladys on Friday, August 15, 2008, in Windsor Elms Village, which has been her home for the past seven years. Born in Wentworth, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Robie and Ida (Benjamin) Flynn. Gladys was raised in Newport Station and lived in Three Mile Plains. She was a hairdresser and owned her own business for many years. Gladys is survived by children, James (Sandra) and Laura Mae (Reg); five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice Blinn, Pauline Millett, and Julia Shaw; sisters-in-law, Mary Flynn and Marg Flynn. She was predeceased by husband, Alexander “Alex”; sisters, Clara, Dot and Velma; brothers, Gordon, Robie, and Bert. We will always be very grateful for the kind, compassionate and loving care given to Gladys by all the staff at the Windsor Elms. BOUDREAU, Paul Lawrence - 1932-2008. Paul passed away on August 15, 2008, at his home on Mood's Mill Road, Summerville, Yarmouth Co. Cremation service has taken place according to Paul's wishes. Paul was the son of the late Calice and Winifred (Noah) Boudreau. Paul was born and grew up in Yarmouth, attending St. Ambrose School and Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School. He served for three years in the Royal Canadian Air Force deployed on peace keeping missions in Germany and Africa. He graduated from Air Traffic Control in Toronto and worked in Newfoundland. Paul and his brother Walter built up a business that they operated in Halifax for many years. Paul and Walter, along with their father Cal, brought the Dairy Queen to Yarmouth. Upon returning to Yarmouth, Paul had several business ventures. He had been retired for many years. Paul leaves behind a grieving wife, Patricia Moore Boudreau; four children with his former wife Hazel (deceased), Cal (Glenna), Drake, Lisa (John), Michelle (Peter); five grandchildren; brother, Walter, and Patricia's children, Leslie, Robin and Carlyle. We wish to thank the Victorian Order of Nurses for their compassionate attention and support over the years. Without their help we would have had a much more difficult journey. Our thanks are also extended to the complimentary health practitioners who have helped throughout the years, Dr. John Heisler, MD, Holistic Medicine, Theresa MacLean, B.Sc. Pharm. N.D.; Erica Poole, B Osteopathy, and other disciplines who have given advice and support. We are grateful to The Palliative Care Team, Dr. Shelagh Leahy and Shelia D'eon, RN, for their kindness, expertise and honesty which has been a great comfort. John Rodgerson McNeill - 87, Aylesford, Kings Co., passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Millville, he was a son of the late, Outhit and Pearl (Rodgerson) McNeill. John worked with his father for many years logging and in the saw mill. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces and was stationed in North Luffingham, UK, Marville and Metz, France, CFB Borden, ON., and CFB Greenwood. He also worked in the Base Transport Section in Greenwood as a civilian employee. John enjoyed his vegetable garden and spending time with family and friends at his cottage on Lake Paul. He was an avid card player and won many trophies. He also enjoyed watching baseball. John is survived by his loving wife of 65 yrs., Jean “Snooky” (Gates) McNeill; his daughter, Patricia Bélanger, Comox, B.C.; his beloved grandson, Steven John (Lisa Baker) Bélanger; great grandson, Logan Baker; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his brothers, Arch and Scott; sister, Kathleen Murray. The family would like to thank, Dr. Goddard, Dr. Hadlaw and Dr. Jiwani, for their special care shown to John. There was no visitation by the family’s request. A graveside service took place at 11 a.m. Friday August 22, 2008 in Aylesford Union Cemetery, Chaplain Jim Norton officiated. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of H.C.
