Bikers invest winnings in community
It’s a question many of us have hoped to ponder: “What will we do with our winnings?” For Rodents Revenge–a motorcycle club created in early 2008–the question surfaced August 10, when they claimed the grand prize in Scallop Days’ recycled raft race.

These men might have used the $100 prize to buy beer and burgers—but they really wanted to give back to their community.

So they looked around for a great need, and they found it in the parking lot at the local Tim’s.

There, fellow bikers gathered daily. Those bikers stood around–or they parked their derrieres on concrete.

A picnic table! It was in the right price range–and it would fulfill a community need.

Rodents Revenge members Phil Robertson, Tony Chute and John Soles say the table at Tim’s is just the first of many community contributions they intend to make.

Actually, the group of seven—which includes Neil Pothier, Andrew Maves, Richard Gaudet and Kevin George—had a reputation for supporting the community already. They served in the organization of this year’s Relay for Life and Scallop Days.

They had previously been involved in the planning of the annual Wharf Rat Rally. When they left that organization, they realized they missed the comraderie of the weekly meetings. So they began getting together on Tuesday evenings, and over the past few months have built a bike together. They say they have enough spare parts to build another one—and that’s in their plans.

There are also talking about a poker run, with any funds raised being channeled to community causes. And they are holding their first annual 72-hour BBQ, on Labour Day weekend. It’s a invitation-only no-charge event, but they anticipate their friends will leave donations. If that happens, they say money will go to a local charity or non-profit organization.
