Company eyeing tin mine site

A Canadian mineral exploration company thinks there could be a sparkling future for the former East Kemptville tin mine site.

Avalon Ventures, a Toronto-based company, is looking at the site where, according to the company's website, large inferred resources have been identified requiring further drilling to bring the project to the pre-feasibility stage.

Ajay Chopra, a public relations person for the company, said the former mine's tin-copper-zinc-rare metal deposit has the potential to host resources of Indium, a rare metal that is in increasing demand because it is used in the manufacturing of electronics for things such as the thin film coatings in flat screen TVs and monitors.

Chopra said the company is in the early stages of determining what their next move would be and would soon be meeting with local officials and stakeholders.

The East Kemptville site was once the only tin mine in North America and was operated by Rio Algom. It closed in 1992 as tin prices dropped.
