August 10 to August 16, 2008 VAUGHAN, Ivan Bruce, — formerly of Windsor, NS, passed away Sunday, Aug.10, 2008 in Hemet, California, USA, at the age of 75. Born in Windsor March 17, 1933, he was the seventh child and fourth son of James Alexander and Olive Pearl (Kilcup) Vaughan. As a young man in Windsor, between outboard boat races at Lily Lake, Ivan was an agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and a travelling salesman for Hants Wholesalers. After moving to California, he continued with the Metropolitan for several years and then was employed as an agent for a swimming pool organization. Being very artistic and creative, he turned his hobbies of fine finish woodworking, decorative glass window creation and bird carving into a much-enjoyed pastime, still leaving time to be a friendly, kind, helping and caring friend to all, in every way possible. Ivan is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 33 years, and Patricia Winning, his devoted step-daughter. Also surviving are siblings Shirley Bowness, Vernon, BC, Avery (Helena), Windsor, Pauline (David) Murdock, Dartmouth, and Garth (Lauren), Windsor and Little Narrows, CB, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by both parents, sister Irma Rogers and brother Harold, as well as sisters-in-law Muriel (Garth), Hazel (Avery), and brothers-in-law Clarence (Shirley) and Allan (Irma). Cremation will be followed by a Memorial Service at ELKS, 1305 West Florida Avenue, Hemet, CA, USA, 92545 at 2 p.m., Sept. 8, 2008.

August 10 to August 16, 2008 Robert McKinley Butler – 57, of New Minas, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2008 in New Minas. Born in Kentville, he was a son of Doris (Arnburg) Butler, Kentville and the late Avard Butler. He was raised in North Alton, attended Central Kings Rural High School and the former Kings Regional Vocational School, where he studied welding. He later worked at IGA and the Agnew Surpass Shoe Store, where he held a position in management. He then moved to Toronto and worked with Career Path Limited, where he met his life-long friend, Randy Neilsen. In 1988 he returned to New Minas and was a superintendent and managed apartment buildings until the time of his death. In his youth, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and had a passion for playing golf and watching tournaments. He enjoyed playing darts with his brothers and dart friends and spending time with his family. In addition to his mother, he is survived by four sisters, Deborah “Debbie” (Charlie) Graves, Valerie (Ray) Bishop and Teresa “Terrie” Martin, all of Kentville; Pamela Foley, Windsor; five brothers, Richard (Pam) and Ronald (Sharon), both of New Minas; Steven (Marlene), Amherst; Eric (Susan), Nanaimo, BC; David, Sackville; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Cathy; an infant brother, Laurie; two brothers-in-law, Robert Arnold and Allen “Richard” Martin. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008, Reverend June Keddy officiated. August 10 to August 16, 2008 Douglas Sterling Mills – 68, of Berwick, formerly of Wolfville, passed away Monday, August 11, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Shediac Cape, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Ronald and Eula (Welling) Mills. He had been employed with the Canadian Coast Guard, serving on the icebreaker, John A. MacDonald. He enjoyed reading and old cars. He is survived by a sister, Margaret (Douglas) Nickerson, Wolfville; a brother, Sandy (Carole), Hantsport; a sister-in-law, Norma “Catherine” Mills, Canning; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald “Alan”. There will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2008 in St. Martin’s in the Woods Anglican Church, Shediac Cape, Father Richard McConnell officiating. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her only daughter Sharon McLaughlin (Fox) & Dennis B.C. Grandsons Brian Randall (Jeannine) B.C.  Wayne Randall (Janet) B.C. Her biological sister Ruth Brewer, Burtts Corner, N.B. She also leaves behind three half sisters, Florence Robicheau (Ed), Gloria Doucette and Helen Alcock, of Yarmouth; three half brothers, Frank (Freida) Bullerwell, Bernard Bullerwell and Murray Bullerwell all of Yarmouth. August 10 to August 16, 2008 BOWLBY, Russell C. - 90, of Middleton passed away, Monday, August 11, 2008 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Aylesford, he was a son of the late Dimock and Jennie (Gray) Bowlby. Russell was a retired accountant and a veteran of the Second World War. He was best friend and husband to Fern M. Bowlby. He is also survived by nieces, Marie Cress, Middleton and Janet Parker Vaughan, Middleton; nephews, Paul Kinsman, Oakville, ON and Frank Corbett, Toronto, ON. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Violet B. Baltzer; sisters, Marion, Myrtle, Lillian, Mildred, Marjorie and Laura; brothers, Wallace, Herbert and Robert. Visitation was held Wednesday, August 13, 2008 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448, where the funeral service was held Thursday August, 14, 2008. Rev. August 10 to August 16, 2008 BOWER, Alma Frances - 96, Carleton, passed away in Tidal View Manor on August 11, 2008. She had resided in Carleton for the past 63 years. Born May 25, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Albert Dennis and Nellie Marion (Pugh) Horton. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Alma worked at Sunset Terrace, Yarmouth prior to her marriage and was a homemaker for the rest of her life. She was a faithful attendee of Carleton United Baptist Church until becoming ill. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and like a second mother to many of the neighborhood children. Her favourite pastimes were going to yard sales and shopping at Frenchy's. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Fraser Bower; her twin sister, Clara; sister, Eva Madden; brothers, Arthur, Earl, Lindsay, Everette Horton; son, Ellsworth Harry, and daughter Brenda Ann; grandson, Robert Boudreau; son-in-law, Don Sweeney. Surviving are son, Earl; daughters, Gladys, Mary, Hilda, Synthia (Gordon), Lillian, Leona; grandchildren, Honey Amber (Steve), Brent (Nicole), Christine (Curtis), Dawn Marie (John), Jody (Shawn), Joey, Ronda; great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Bradford, Tyeshia, Latoya, Dalanté, Curtis, Shelby, AJ, Jordan, Trinity, Devan, Dustin; great-great-grandson, Dawson; several nieces and nephews. August 10 to August 16, 2008 Lillian Mae Parker – formerly of Medford, Kings County, passed away Monday, August 11, 2008 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville.  Born in Medford in 1910, she was the third daughter of the late Lyman and Nora (Patterson) Parker. Lillian was a graduate of the Normal College, Truro and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s University. She began teaching school in 1929, teaching in several schools, including Windsor and spent the last 20 years of her teaching career at Westmount School, Halifax. She dearly loved her pupils and they liked her. One of her Grade 9 classes made her a booklet with each student contributing a verse and kind words about their teacher. It was one of her most precious treasures.  She was predeceased by three sisters, Leonice Husler, Dorothy Parker and Emma Morton. She is survived by a brother, Earl. There was no visitation by family request. A short graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 14, 2008 in the Habitant Cemetery, Kings County, Reverend Doctor M. R. Cherry officiated. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces throughout Canada, including postings in Gagetown and Aldershot. He was a member of the Black Watch, served in Germany and played the bagpipes. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by request. August 10 to August 16, 2008 BARABAS “WEISZ”, George — 82, of Windsor, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at home. Born Jan. 11, 1926, in Kaposvar, Hungary, he was the son of the late Jeno and Rozalia (Kaplola) Weisz. George was an avid golfer, he loved tennis and had belonged to many clubs in the past. His sense of humour and passion was reflected through his many works of art. George was predeceased by, his common-law wife, Phyllis Stephens. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life and art, was held in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor, from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, August 17. A private burial service was held. August 10 to August 16, 2008 MORTON, Eugene Wesley – 79, 6 Store St., Yarmouth, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on January 8, 1929, he was a son of the late Samuel and Laura (Gould) Morton. Eugene was a Veteran of World War II and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #61, Yarmouth. He loved to play pool and was well known by many people. He was a very soft-spoken and caring man that loved to help others. He loved his wife and family. He was employed with the Box Factory and later with Dominion Textiles, where he was a longtime employee. Surviving are his loving wife of 45 years, Margaret; daughter, Ann Marie Jacquard, Yarmouth; son, Gary (Sharon) Eugene Morton, Yarmouth; sister, Bernice Smith, Oak Park, Shelburne County; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother, Aubrey. Remains rested in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Visiting hours took place Monday, August 18, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service was held Tuesday, August 19 at 2 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home chapel, Rev. August 10 to August 16, 2008 HANKINSON, Marguerite Frances (Peg) - 99, of Middleton, Nova Scotia, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2008 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital with her beloved grand-daughter, Susan LeGard, at her side. Marguerite was born in Coldstream, New Brunswick, on November 11th, 1908. She was the daughter of the late William H. and Ethel (Nevers) Drake. She attended school in Coldstream and Truro. In 1929 she graduated from the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College with a Teacher's License. In 1930 she graduated from the Manual Training School in Domestic Science. In 1931 she graduated from the Dietary Department of the Toronto General Hospital. In 1931 she was accepted as a Domestic Science teacher at the Macdonald Consolidated School, in Middleton. On April 17th, 1933 she married Thomas Edward Hankinson of Middleton. In 1953 she returned to teaching, at Middleton Rural High School, after raising her family. She retired from teaching in 1971. Marguerite is survived by her son, Thomas Drake Hankinson, her daughter, Dianne LeGard, both of Middleton and daughter, Helen (Darrel) Pearman of Bridgewater. Sister, Audrey Kenney,Yarmouth. Eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren and one great -great grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Sr., sisters, Abbey McBurney, Pauline Steen and Fern Drake; brothers, Barrie, Dean, Eugene and Brice. Through-out her life Marguerite was active in her church, and various organizations. She was a chartered member of the Annaval Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and its first Worthy Matron. She was an active member of Rosemary Chapter IODE, Middleton Red Cross, Baptist Church Ladies Missionary Society and Ladies Sewing Circle. She served on the Macdonald Consolidated School Board in the late 1930's and the Middleton Regional High School Board in the late 1980's. Marguerite was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining. An avid bridge player she was known as "Ducky the Champ", and enjoyed a good game of bridge up until this past June. As per Marguerite's wishes, her body has been donated to the Dalhousie Medical School. Visitation was held at Middleton Funeral Home on Sunday, August 17, the Annaval Chapter Order of Eastern Star conducted their service that evening. A memorial service was held on Monday August 18th at the Middleton Funeral Home, Rev. Norm Hovland officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ionic Masonic Lodge #73 Building Fund; Twelve Baskets Food Bank; Macdonald School Museum or MRHS Enhancement Fund. She had been employed in farming, mostly picking apples, retiring due to ill health. She enjoyed travelling, playing solitaire and fishing. She is survived by a special friend, Roland Amero, Canning; a daughter, Annette (Austin) Blenus, Canning; a son, James (Bonnie) Keefe, Ontario; a sister, Shirley Daurie, Canaan; four brothers, Ronald and Stephen, both of Canaan; John and Gerald, both of New Minas; four grandchildren, Mary-Ann, Jeffery, James and Jennifer; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William “Bill”; two brothers, Thomas and Donald. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, August 18, 2008, Reverend Elias Mutale officiated.
