Christine Ruth (Walsh) Rhyno – 93, formerly of Grand Pré, Kings County passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born on October 4, 1914 in Avonport, she was the daughter of the late Wellington and Nora (King) Walsh. She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll Rhyno; brothers, Kenneth (Chipman, NS); Robert (Hantsport, NS); Paul (New Minas, NS); sister, Thelma (Ted) Patton (Hantsport, NS). She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Christine was the beloved mother of Gloria (James) Morse, Westville; Carrollee (Merrick) Day, Kentville; grandmother of Kristine Stubbert, Jamie Morse, Robb Morse and Lawrence Morse; Jacqueline Day and Shannon Day; great grandmother of Erika and Lauchie Stubbert; Devin and Derek Morse; James , Robert, Jason and Mason Morse; Lorrie Beth and Jennifer Morse. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Beulah Mallet, Lawrencetown, Halifax County and Triva McLaughlin, Waverley. Christine lived in Grand Pré for over 60 years and was the oldest resident. During her life, she was an avid gardener, providing beautiful flowers each Sunday for the Covenanter Church of which she was a steward. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. She was an active member of her community and she could often be seen walking in Grand Pré visiting her friends and taking sweets that she baked. She loved wearing bright colours, especially red, a reflection of her personality. She was a lifetime member of the United Church, UCW and Grand Pré Women’s Institute. Upon failing health, she moved to her daughters’ in Kentville and later to Evergreen Home for Special Care. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 9, 2008 in the Covenanter Church, Grand Pré, Reverend Doctor Randy Crozsman officiated. A reception followed in the family home, 2006 Grand Pré Road. Burial took place in the Lower Horton Cemetery, Grand Pré. Family flowers only, by request. DiNardo, Lorraine Marie (nee Muise) – passed away with her family at her side, after a brief illness, at the Hamilton General Hospital on Sunday, August 3, 2008. She was the loving wife of Pasquale for 47 years; loving mother of Anthony (Penny) and Lori Bagliolid (Tom); grandmére of Candyce, Dynelle, Stephen and Lucas. Born on September 23, 1929 in Amirault’s Hill, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late William and Octavie (Moulaison) Muise. She is survived by her sisters Anna Bourque, Margaret Pottier and Christine Landry, all of Amirault’s Hill, Nova Scotia, and her sisters-in-law Marilyn Muise (Hamilton) and Mildred Muise (Amirault’s Hill, Nova Scotia); also by sisters-in-law Rosa DiNardo and Chirina Ciancone (Hector). She was predeceased by sisters Helen, Elise, Victoria, Genevieve, and brothers Reggie, Louis and brother-in-law Roggero DiNardo. She will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends in Hamilton and Nova Scotia. Friends called at the Marlatt Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 615 Main Street East (east of Sanford), Hamilton, Ontario, on Wednesday, August 6 from 2-4 and 7-9. John Frederick Warden - 65 passed away on Aug. 3, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. He was the son of Bridget Warden, New Minas and the late George Warden, Kentville. John is survived by his wife and best friend of 41 years, Heather (Manning), New Minas; his daughter and kindred spirit Ali (Ross Copp), and his soon to be born granddaughter, Rachel Abigail, Whitby, Ontario. Also survived by mother Bridget, New Minas; sisters, Pat (Brian Sutherland) New Minas, Kaye (Frank Nichols), Kentville, Jill (Jamie Kitchen), New Minas; brother, Tom (Linda), Saint John; Also nephews, Lars and Greg Nichols, Scott and Jason Sutherland, Kentville and New Minas. John graduated from KCA in Kentville and attended Acadia University in Wolfville. After leaving Acadia in 1967, John joined CMHC in Halifax as an Administrative Assistant and with over 10 years with CMHC was a member of the Branch Supervisory Team at the Ontario Regional Office in Toronto; Systems Analyst at the Head office in Ottawa and Administration and Finance Officer and Program Manager, Housing in the Charlottetown Regional Office. In 1981 John returned home to become Development Officer with The Municipality of Kings, a position he held for 26 years. A well known athlete in the Province John excelled in hockey at KCA and Acadia. In the late 50's and early 60's he was a member of the Kentville Wildcats Hockey Team, Canning Habs Maritime Senior Baseball team, star shortstop with the Kentville Junior Cardinals Baseball Team who won the Provincial title in the 60's and at the Canadian Championship in Montreal was selected to the Canadian All-Star Team. In 1961 he was a member of the Moncton Junior Beaver Hockey Team who represented the Maritimes in the Memorial Cup Championship at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto against the Toronto St. Mikes. John also played for the Hantsport Shamrocks Baseball Team who were a powerhouse in Senior Baseball in the mid 60's. In his latter years John was proud of being a member of the Wolfville Oldtimers Hockey Team where he was instrumental in ensuring that camaraderie and laughter were team goals, while winning was just a bonus. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. His sense of humour and his dry wit will not be forgotten. John was most proud of his years as Development Officer in Kings County, where he was well known for going out of his way to help others. At John's specific request, a funeral will not be held. The body has been cremated with the ashes being scattered at a later date. Donations in John's memory to Kings County Branch of the SPCA or Valley Regional Hospital Fund would be appreciated. SLACK, Gerald Wesley “Jerry”, 78, of Shelburne, passed away in Roseway Hospital Monday, August 4, 2008. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he was a son of the late Andrew and Irene Slack. Jerry was in the Military for 24 years, retiring with the rank of Sergeant. Following his retirement from the military, he went on to being a cook in several restaurants in Shelburne and finished his working years, until the age of 65, as a cook at Roseway Hospital. Jerry was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #63. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also loved music. He is survived by sons, Dale (Sandra), Jordan Branch; William (Karen), Lake Deception; daughter, Rosemarie (Joseph), Yarmouth; grand-children, Clinton, Sara, Makayla and Daniel, as well as his mother in-law, Annie Harris. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel. A memorial service was held on August 8, 2008 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne. Rev. Joanne McFadden officiated. Walter Frank Bent - 76, Woodville, Hants Co., died August 4, 2008. Born in Steam Mill, Kings Co., on August 16, 1931, he was a son of the late Charles and Edith (Whalen) Bent. He was a 23 year member of Local 113 City of Toronto Fire Department and International Association of Firefighters. As well, he was a member of the Toronto Firefighter War Veteran's Association and Toronto Fire Department Pensioners Association Inc. Walter had received citations of bravery from the Department and was Acting Captain of Rescue Squad No. 1 upon retirement. He loved hunting, fishing, trapping, playing his guitar, cooking, gardening, and his Brittany Spaniels and Black Labs. He is survived by his wife, Irene (True), sons, Walter (Sarah), Toronto, Ont.; Russell (Betty Lou), Whitby, Ont.; Robert (Heather) Caswell, Milton, Ont.; daughter, Barbara, at home; grandchildren, Mathew, Coleman and Russell Bent, William, Julie, James and David Coswell, along with extended family. Walter is survived by brothers, Charles Murray (Frances), Brooklyn; Russell Eton, Ellershouse; nieces, Kathy (Donnie) Lake, Sackville; Theresa (Gerry) Dawson, Dartmouth; nephew, Waldon Bent, Surrey, B.C., along with several a great-niece and great-nephews. Ellen Constance Thompson – She passed away suddenly at Tyndall Estates Retirement Home on Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the age of 104 years. She was born February 26, 1904, in Kentville, N.S. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Rev. Canon G. R. Thompson, by her parents Arthur and Minnie Palmeter, by her brothers Lockhart and Robert Palmeter and by her sister Frances Shangle, Ellen is survived by her dear daughter and son-in-law Frances and Ian CLarkson, by her grandsons Andrew (Joanne), John and David Clarkson, by her granddaughter Jennifer Clarkson and by her great granddaughter Isabella Clarkson. Ellen was a rector’s wife who gave great support to her husband in the parishes of St. James Church, Kentville N.S., St. John’s Church, Truro, N.S., and the Church of Ascension, Don Mills, Ont. Her door was always open to welcome any parishioners in need of a cup of tea and a chat or a meal. She was a family homemaker and a gracious hostess. She was a life member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Angilcan Church, now the ACW and of the British and Foreign Bible Society, now the Canadian Bible Society. Many thanks to Andrea Williams and the caring staff at Tyndall Estates. The funeral service was held on Friday, August 8, 2008 at All Saints’ Kingsway Anglican Church, 2850 Bloor St. W. at Prince Edward Drive. The family received friends at the Prince Edward entrance of the church for one hour before the service. Interment at St. George’s on-the-Hill Cemetery. James “Harley” Bligh - 84, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away Thursday August 7, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Chute) Bligh. Harley was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife, Maizie (Foster) Bligh; daughters, Orlene Bligh-Coldwell (Scott Coldwell), Kentville; Mary Dene Bligh-Cain; granddaughters, Brittany & Abigail Cain, Fredericton, N.B.; sister-in-law, Beatrice Bligh, Fundy Villa, Berwick; numerous nieces & nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Orlay, Kenneth & Lester Bligh; sister, Violet Jacques. Harley worked in his younger years at the family run business, Bligh’s Theatre, Berwick and was educated at Horton Academy (Acadia University), Wolfville, receiving his business degree. After his education he went to work at Sears Order Office in Berwick, which he operated for 37 years until his retirement. Over the years in business he owned and operated a shoe store, a variety store and was the owner of a business complex that housed several commercial and apartment rentals. Harley loved his home town of Berwick, and was a long-time ambassador for recruiting new Berwickians and promoted the town at every opportunity. Harley contributed to the community in many ways and was a member of Valley Lodge # 90, A.F. & A.M., Berwick and was a 50 year jewel holder. He was also a past member of the Berwick Gala Days Committee, the Arena Committee, the Board of Trade, and was a Trustee of the Berwick Cemetery Company. Harley had a love of people and always had time to extend his kindness and passion for life to family, friends and often complete strangers. He will be missed by all the numerous people he has touched. There was no visitation at the funeral home. A celebration of his life took place 2:00 p.m., Monday August 11, in the Berwick United Church, 240 Commercial St., Berwick. Rev. FENTON, Leslie Hubert - 80, Yarmouth, passed away August 7, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on May 30, 1928, he was a son of the late William and Mildred (Nichols) Fenton. Leslie was an adherent of the Evangel Assembly Church. He was a personal care worker at Tidal View Manor for 12 years and a former employee of Yarmouth Poor Farm. Surviving are brothers, Paul (Norma), Lawrence (Frances) and Allan; sisters, Lorraine Comeau, Marjorie Smith, Grace Nickerson (Harvey), Florence Watkins, all of Yarmouth. COMEAU, Ricky “Butler” Burton — age 44, of Bramber, Hants County, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008. SNODGRASS, Patricia Ann - It is with great sadness the family announce the death of Patricia Ann Snodgrass at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB on August 7, 2008 after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family. Born 1935 in Toronto, ON to the late Madeline (Ryan) and George Francis. Pat will be sadly missed by her devoted husband of 26 years Gerry Snodgrass of Saint John; son Michael MacAlpine (Ilona) of Halifax, NS; daughter Teri Nickerson (Andy) of Yarmouth, NS; greatly missed by her loving grandchildren Shelby Nickerson and Nicholas and Alexander MacAlpine who were her greatest joys in life. She will also be missed by her sister Karen Francis and brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jean Francis all of Toronto; nieces, nephews; many cousins and friends. Pat enjoyed camping, traveling, playing games on the computer and her garden. SWINEAMER, Patricia Anne “Pat” — 71, of Centre Burlington, Hants County, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by her loving family. Born Jan. 11, 1937, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, she was the daughter of the late Annie Lillian (Nicholson) MacRae-Cudmore. Pat was a Real Estate Agent in Hants County for over 20 years. She was also the Municipality of the District of West Hants, 2008 Representative Volunteer. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Harold Thomas Swineamer; her daughters, Cherilyn “Sheri” (Gary) MacIntosh, Lr. Sackville; Heather (Victor) Foley, Big Valley, Alberta; Karen Swineamer (Wade Caldwell), Windsor; grandchildren, Christopher and Ryan MacIntosh; Jeffrey, Victor and Brittni Foley; Sarah Payzant; great-grandchildren, Kyuss, Joshwa, Brian and Charisma; siblings, Tim (Lottie) MacRae, Charlottetown, PEI; Wilma (John) Juurlink, New Glasgow; Donald (Katie) MacRae, Jacksonville, Florida. BOURQUE, Cecil J. – 80, formerly of Surette’s Island, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2008 in Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton. Born September 25, 1927 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late James F. “Jacques” and Mary Jane (Moulaison) Bourque. He served as a chaplain for the RCAF for nine years, and upon his retirement from the RCAF, he worked for Canada Manpower and Immigration until his retirement. He loved reading, and had an unquenching thirst for travel, having visited most of the Canadian provinces, several states, and Europe. His passion for the past few years was golfing. He is survived by his wife, Hazel (Muise); a brother, Joe (Jeanne), Montreal; nephews, Cecil (Betty), Hammond’s Plains; Michael (Gert), Lower Eel Brook; Pierre (Bacha), Montreal; nieces, Elaine (Don), Newmarket; Doreen, North Belleville; Claudette (David), Mississauga; Carole (Creo), St. Jerome; Louise, Laval; step-dughters, Gail (Herman) and Marlene, both of Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau; step-grandson, Michel (Cindy), and step-great granddaughter, Emma, all of Lower Eel Brook; several great-nieces and nephews. Barry Gene Morehouse – 31, of Kentville, passed away August 8, 2008 in Kentville. Born in Annapolis Royal, he was a son of Bernard and Audrey (Specht) Morehouse, Kentville. Barry attended school in New Minas, graduated from Kings County Academy, Kentville and was an avid sportsman, playing soccer and high school hockey. He had worked in the oil fields of Alberta and most recently worked with Apple Valley Foods, Kentville. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Janet Baltzer, Bridgetown; Kathy (Wade) Connell, Kentville; Bonita “Bonnie” McCullough (Michael Acker), Middleton; several nieces and nephews; two great nieces and one great nephew. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Katherine. Cremation has taken place. Dorothy Frances “Dot” Pineo – 56, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Elden and Minnie (Bennett) Barkhouse. She had been employed as a hairdresser for over 30 years. She was a member of T.O.P.S. 378, Kentville and a former member of B.R.A.I.N. Child. Dot enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. She also delighted in floral arrangements and spending time with close friends. She is survived by her husband, Terry Michael “Mike” Pineo; two daughters, Laura-Lee (Murray) Coleman, Kentville; Heather Pineo, Wolfville; two granddaughters, Bethany and Breanna Coleman; a brother, Gerald “Jerry” Barkhouse, Canning; three sisters, Sharon Greencorn, Canning; Elizabeth “Betty” Best, Kentville; Anne Hesslegrave, Ontario; many nieces and nephews; extended family members, Elizabeth “Bette” and Michael Salsman and family, Kentville. She was predeceased by a son, Anthony; a brother, Robert “Bob” Barkhouse. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2008, Pastor Devin Johnstone officiated. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses. Norman Danford MacDonald – The family of Norman Danford MacDonald, 86, formerly of New Minas, wishes to announce his passing on Saturday, August 9, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Pictou County on August 23, 1921, he was the son of the late Ernest and Amy (MacLeod) MacDonald of New Glasgow. Norman was a member of the Kings Presbyterian Church, New Minas. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was also a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville and a past officer of the executive committee. He had been employed with Irving Oil for over 30 years. A founding member and Captain in the New Minas Volunteer Fire Department, Norman worked tirelessly at many functions and fund raisers at both of these organizations as well as delivered "Meals on Wheels" through the hospital for many years. Norman was also a 57-year member of I.O.O.F Hiawatha Lodge, No. 57, Kentville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dearest friends and relatives. His wonderful smile, gentle manner and true kindness will be deeply missed by all. In his later years, he became a care giver for over a year keeping a watchful eye on his wife, Lida, as she lost her battle with cancer. The entire family is at peace with the fact he is now by her side where he has longed to be since her passing. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Andre) Gauthier, Kentville; a grandson, Ian (Dawn) Gauthier and their daughters, Cassandra and Reagan, Halifax; a granddaughter, Melanie, Vancouver; four sisters-in-law, Frances (Don) Job, Mona Benjamin and Joan Young, all of Kentville; Lola Horner, New Minas; two sisters-in-law by marriage, Jean Manning, Kentville and Joy Manning, Greenwich; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. In addition to his wife, the former Lida Manning, he was predeceased by one brother, Eddie (Sheila) MacDonald of McLellan's Brook, New Glasgow. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday August 12, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a combined Royal Canadian Legion and funeral service was held Wednesday August 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Dr. P.A. McDonald officiated with a reception following. A private family burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory to the Valley Hospice Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family to further our residents of the valley in their battle with cancer. Ivy Lilian (Evans) Power – 90, formerly of Dartmouth and Canning, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 9, 2008 in Ocean View Manor, Eastern Passage. Born in London, England on August 22, 1917, she was the daughter of the late William John Bentall and Ivy May (Humphries) Bentall. She worked for the Department of Information and was a member of the Home Guard in London, England, during the Second World War. She moved to Canada with her husband and two daughters in 1954. She retired from the Province of Nova Scotia, Department of Health and Welfare, as an Executive Secretary. She was predeceased by her first husband in 1964, John Harold Evans and by her second husband in 1996, Richard Walter (Chaucey) Power. She is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Evans and Marilyn (Brady) Doyle, both of Dartmouth; step-sons, Terry and Tim, British Columbia and Lyn, Halifax; brothers, Bill (Mavis), John (Kathy), and Robin, sisters, Betty Ashworth and Evelyn Kirby, all of England; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ivy enjoyed volunteering for her church, gardening, crafts and boating. She will be remembered for her warm heart and kindness. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. There was no visitation. A memorial service celebrating her life was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 in St. Michaels and All Angels Church, Canning, with a reception following. Canon S. J. P. Davies officiated. Burial took place in St. John’s Anglican Church Parish Cemetery, Church Street, Port Williams. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
