Locke finishes 71st at national championship
Nova Scotia junior champion Eric Locke of Digby finished in 71st place Friday at the Canadian Junior Boys’ championship in Edmonton, Alta.
Locke had opened the tournament Aug. 5 with an even-par 72, but was unable to maintain that level of play. His next three rounds of 79, 78 and 79 gave him a 20-over total of 308, which also left him in 29th place in the juvenile division.

Nova Scotia’s best finish came from Ally Tidcombe of Wolfville, who was plus-eight for the tournament and finished 28 in the junior division and 12th in juvenile.

Eric Banks of Truro, wound up 61st in junior and 24th in juvenile, while Thomas McLellan of Halifax was 75th in junior competition.

Seventy-seven players from the field of 155 made the cut after the second round at the championship that is organized by the Royal Canadian Golf Association.

Sixteen-year old Mitch Sutton of London, Ont., who closed with a 3-under par-69 to finish at 280, won the national championship at Edmonton Petroleum Golf and Country Club.

The newly crowned Canadian junior and juvenile champion started the day two-strokes back, but managed a solid 3-under par 33 on the back-nine to separate himself from Thursday’s leader.

As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, Sutton earns an exemption into the Canadian men’s amateur championship Aug. 10-14 at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alta.

I can hardly believe the little info I have read in your paper regarding the accomplishments of the young Eric Locke from Digby. When you touched on him wininng the Atlantic's, that is what it was, touching. There was a young chap that had a hole in one at the Digby Pines that got more attention. Not taking anything away from a hole in one but do you think that a hole in one (which is mostly by luck) deserves more attention than a young man who at the age of 15 has done what he has done for golf in Nova Scotia. Winning the midget championship of N.S. in 07 and being the player of the year, for N.S., for 07 also.
And going to be player of the year for Juniors for 08. And in "08" winning the midget, Juvenille, and Junior crowns in the same year. Something that has never been done as far as I know. He was also on the winning team for Atlantics for N.S. in 08 and won the family tournament in Greenwood, for Grandson and Grandfather, for N.S. with his Grandfather Stan Locke. And I know there are other things that he has done that you should be reporting on about him. Be proud of him for the Digby area. You wrote more about some kid from out West who we don't know. Show the area and N.S. what a great talent he is.
Unless maybe there is a grassgrowing tournament somewhere that you want to report on. That would be "much" more fun to read about than a kid from Digby who has won more tournaments and trophies at the age of 15 than most people will ever win in a life time.

I hope sometime soon you do this kid justice and report about all he has done. Show Digby what they have got and should be behind and supporting 100 %.

Respectfully, Dale Hoyt
