Police investigate two-vehicle crash near New Minas Friday

There was a big “bang,’ and soon, a helicopter was flying low over her home.

Toemeka Guptill lives near the site of the two-vehicle collision on Highway 101 south of New Minas, Friday afternoon.

RCMP Traffic Services is investigating the two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, Aug. 1, on Highway 101 near New Minas. The collision between two cars sent three adults to the Valley Regional Hospital and with a child being airlifted to the IWK in Halifax. All were listed in serious condition with undetermined injuries.

Guptill was impressed with the efforts of the emergency response workers. “It didn’t take them long at all to get everybody out of the vehicles.”

She also noted that the vehicles generally withstood the impact.

Guptill noted that a huge plume of black smoke erupted but didn’t last long.

A third vehicle, farm machinery that was uninvolved, was also present in the crash scene.

The 101was closed for almost four hours while the RCMP collision re-constructionist investigated the crash scene.

Emergency medical services as well as firefighters from several departments were also at the scene.

It was the beginning of a long weekend and traffic was heavy.

This was the second crash on Highway 101 in the Greenwich-New Minas area in as many days.

At about 6:19 p.m. Thursday evening, a lone male driver lost control of his west-bound vehicle about a mile east of Exit 11, crossed over the centre-line and ended up in the ditch on the south side of the highway.

The driver was taken to the Valley Regional Hospital with undetermined injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol was not believed to have been a factor in the accident.
