Ban on open fires lifted

Due to significant precipitation in recent days, the open fire ban in place since July 9 ended at noon today, July 23.

The open fire ban, which included all counties, was lifted since the rain from the remnants of tropical storm Cristobal has reduced the risk of fires.

"We encourage Nova Scotians to continue to use caution when having fires in and around woodlands," said Rob Uttaro, Department of Natural Resources fire management supervisor. "Always ensure you have the means to control or extinguish your fire, and be cautious of changing weather conditions, especially wind."

Nova Scotians who want to have fires within 305 metres of the woods require a provincial burning permit. Landowners should also contact a local municipal government office to see if any additional permits are required.

If burning brush, doing so during the winter months should be considered as no provincial permit is required and burning conditions are much safer.
