July 13 to July 19, 2008 Jonathan Hilton, 1951 - 2008- It is with immense sorrow that the children of Jonathan (Jon) Smith Hilton announce their father’s passing on July 15, 2008, at age 56. Alexander of Digby, and Erica of Thunder Bay, Ont., were with their dad over the days leading up to his passing at the QE11 in Halifax. Survived by his two children and their mother, former wife yet continual advocating friend Diane Axent of Digby; brothers, Robert Hilton of Waterloo, Ont., and Dave (Dorothy) Hilton of Kamloops, B.C.; sisters, Libby Ackermann of Toronto, and Mary Hilton of Quebec City; Hilton nephews, Geordie (Sigrid), Cody, Tyler and Geoff; Hilton nieces, Jane and Paige (Ryan) Toxopeus; extended family, Carolyn Axent and Steve Brocklebank of Slocan Valley, B.C., and their children Wolfgang and Roxanne. Predeceased by his father, Dr. R. J. Hilton; mother, Janet MacDuff Hilton; a brother, Jim Hilton; and dear friend Pam Langille. Born Nov. 16, 1951, in Edmonton, Alta., Jonathan grew up in Rockwood and Guelph and spent a year in Trinidad and Tobago. Prior to meeting Diane in Bear River, and with help from great friends in building his home on the Sissiboo Road, he traveled and worked in many provinces especially the interior of British Columbia. In the Slocan Valley, he built strong bonds of friendship with Knob, Stokely, Mona and many more who loved him deeply and kept in touch. Facing their shared challenges with MS, two siblings and Jonathan all met life with humor, courage and dignity. Since 1980, Jonathan's tenacity in the face of his disability and the way he managed when others would likely have given up, shared by example, always turned the most difficult to seem both natural and accepting. That's not to say it wasn't without a voice determined to get what was needed and done. Although unable to do physical labors he maintained an interest in horticulture, world events on CBC, reading, scrabble, took to painting images captured in his memory telling stories about places he had seen and things he had done. Jonathan used only one finger to type out poetry and stories enough to fill a novel and in earlier years was often featured as a writer in Nova Scotia publicatioNova Scotia. When asked about his watercolor works resulting in being sought after pieces of art, Jonathan said, “My disease has provided me with a unique opportunity to experience having a dominant hand in each hemisphere of the brain. It is my joy to share the resulting confusion.” Jonathan's life was anything but predictable and not without daily challenges but there was one thing he never doubted—the love of Alex and Erica. They refused to see it as unnatural to tend to all their father’s needs, to include him and physically care for him while unconditionally adoring their dad by accepting all that came with his disability. Special thanks to caregivers Cathy Padilla, Tina Chambers and Shelly LeRue and many others; to Spencer Bevan-John who was always there for him; to those who never let him forget he was loved even if from afar (you know who you are as friends who cared and appreciated his Hilton humor); Dalhousie University for fulfilling Jonathan's wish and accepting him as a Human Donation; Nova Scotia's SPD Department of Community Services and In-Home Support with Nova Scotia Department of Health who managed his needs so he could live life to the very end doing it “his way”. A celebration of Jonathan's life was held in Grace United Church, Digby, with Pastor Nathan Waterman on Sunday, July 20. In remembrance of Jonathan and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences at diane.axent@Nova Scotia.sympatico.ca
