THE ADVANCE

Liverpool resident Ryan Neilson is gearing up for the release of his debut album this week, entitled “Four Walls”.

Recording an album was something Neilson always wanted to do, but originally he was going to do a master’s degree after graduating from Acadia University. Things just seemed to fall into place however, and he decided act on the opportunity.

The 12 track, full-length album contains all original music written by Neilson and recoded at Feswick Productions in Summerville. As well as writing, Neilson also performs vocals and guitar.

The 22-year-old describes his music style as pop, but he doesn’t want that to scare people away.

“Most of the people that hear that think of the worst pop music you could think of, and I don’t want people to do that,” he says.

Instead he would rather they listen to the message.

Neilson also hopes that the music will have more staying power then the usual pop music, and that it will transcend generations rather then become a piece of nostalgia.

The albums title, also the name of one of the songs is about the teenage experience growing up.

“(It’s about) seeking asylum within whatever four walls you want to choose,” he says.

Much of the album, he notes, is also about the invisible walls we make for ourselves in life, and how our current generation is doing so through technology and digital communication.

Neilson graduated from Acadia University in 2007, studying guitar and music composition.

While in university, he played guitar in a band called Los Mafiosos, which lasted for three years, breaking up mostly due to graduation and people moving away.

Neilson’s next step will be promoting his music through performances and radio airplay to get people listening, and a CD release party in early August at Lane’s Privateer Inn.

You can hear samples of Neilson’s music and details on upcoming performances on his WebPages, www.ryanneilsonmusic.com or

CD’s will be available at the Gourmet Shop at Lane’s Privateer Inn.
