July 6 to July 12, 2008 Cyril Richard O’Brien - 59, Kentville, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 6, 2008. Born in Richmond County, Cape Breton, he was a son of Mary (Sampson), L'ardoise and the late Charles O’Brien. He spent 40 years working as a highly accomplished mechanic, holding tickets in truck and transport, heavy duty, automotive and millwright trades. He worked in several areas throughout Nova Scotia. He enjoyed the outdoors, reading and spending time with his family. He was a loving companion, son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his loving companion, Sharon Shaw, Kentville; children, Vivianne (George) Pineo, Brooklyn, Hants Co.; Darrell (Kimberlee) Pottie, Kentville; Frederic (Jean) O’Brien, Moncton, N.B.; grandson, Kyle (whom he loved to spoil); brothers and sisters, Raymond (Myra) O’Brien, L’Ardoise; Anne (Joseph) Briand, L’Ardoise; Hilda (the late Malcom) Shaw, St. George, N.B. Besides his father, he was predeceased by sister, Jean Jones, and brothers, Fred O’Brien and Sonny (Francis) O’Brien. He will be sadly missed by family pet, Sultan, his best friend. Cremation has taken place and the funeral service and interment will take place in Cape Breton at a later date. July 6 to July 12, 2008 FERRETTI, Carmine, Yarmouth, formerly of Shelburne, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2008 in Veteran’s Place at Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born November 4, 1922 to the late Gertrude (Weir) and George Ferretti, he was a mechanic by trade and operated a service station for many years. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He also served in Korea and received the Korean Volunteer Service Medal. He served in the Royal Canadian Legion as President of Loyalist Branch #63 and Zone Commander, Zone 12. He served on the Provincial Poppy Committee and was awarded a Certificate of Merit at the Provincial level Royal Canadian Legion and received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and plaque. In 1992 he became a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was also a past member of the Korean Veteran’s Association and also the R.C.E.M.E. Atlantic Association. Carmine served seven years on Shelburne Town Council and was active on many committees. He was Vice-President of the P.C. Association for a number of years. He was a member and contributor of the Shelburne Yacht Club and served on the Board of Governors of Shelburne Loyalist Baseball Team. He was a member of the United Church of Canada but in later years was an adherent of the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church where he made his profession of faith to the Lord. Carmine is survived by his two daughters, Eileen (Jim) Wood and Cindi (Ron) Kelly, as well as five grandchildren, Colin, Mark, Christie, Jamie, and Erin. He also had six great-grandchildren, Jaylin Ashli, Faith, Owen, Megan and Mia. They were the joy of his life. Carmine is also survived by sisters, Gertrude Corey, Alymer, Quebec; Mary Ashby, Georgia; Thelma Hagar, Hartford, Connectiut and Aileen Purney, Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife, Amelia (Boudreau); son, John and brothers Harold, Arnold, and John and sister, Dorothy Colbert. Carmine spent the last six years of his life at Veteran’s Unit where he received the best of care. They were like his family. His body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical School. A memorial service will be held at H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 2 p.m. Donations may be made to Veteran’s Place Yarmouth Regional Hospital or Camp Peniel, Cedar Lake, Yarmouth. July 6 to July 12, 2008 Helen Edith Keddy – 83, Millville, Kings Co., passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in South Farmington, Annapolis Co., she was a daughter of the late Percy and Emma (Fitzgerald) McMaster. Helen enjoyed attending card parties and she donated faithfully to all charities and canvassers that came to her door. She was a good housekeeper and, along with her late husband Harvey, took great pride in their property. Helen is survived by her sister, Ruth (Jack) Lee; numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her loving and faithful companion, Mougie the cat. Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her husband, Harvey Keddy; nephew, Freeman Taylor (whom Helen and Harvey raised). Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). The family received visitors from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick (902-538-9900), where the funeral service was also held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, Pastor Chuck McGuire officiated. July 6 to July 12, 2008 SISCO, Judy Ann – 65, Prince Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born December 25, 1942 in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Viola (Hurlburt) LeBlanc.  Judy worked at Dominion Textiles, as well as at Valetor Dry Cleaners, and most recently at Gifts Aplenty, all in Yarmouth. Surviving are her husband, Ralph B. Sisco; a son, Scott Sisco, Yarmouth;  a grandson, Andrew Sisco; brother, Daniel (Pat) LeBlanc, Toronto, Ont.; Diane Durkee, Yarmouth. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Daniel Sisco.  Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 11, 2008 at New Life Church, Yarmouth, Pastor Larry Pennell officiated. July 6 to July 12, 2008 WHITING, Robert “Bob” Arthur, age 80, of Windsor, formerly of St. Croix, Hants County, passed away Monday, July 7, 2008, at the V.G. Site, Q.E.II, Halifax, with family by his side, after a five-month illness. Born October 7, 1927, in St. Croix, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marie (DeMont) Whiting. Bob was a much-envied musician, being accomplished on many instruments and played in a number of bands in Nova Scotia, Ontario and the United States. He always had time to teach or correct those not quite so talented. He also composed many songs. Bob loved to walk in the woods and would be the first one out picking mayflowers for special people. He also made pickles every year and shared them with family and friends. Bob was loved by many and will be sadly missed. He spent years with the utilities - Maritime Tel. and Tel., N.S. Light and Power and retired from Minas Basin Pulp and Power. Bob is survived by grandsons Sheldon, Shawn and Shannon; granddaughter, Shilo; daughter-in-law, Arlene (Mrs. Curtis Spencer), all of Lower Vaughans; very special friend, Arleyne Spencer and all her family; sisters, Helen Harding, St. Croix; Pauline (John) MacMillan, Windsor Junction; brother, Jack (Ruth) Whiting, Dartmouth; former wife, Molly Whiting; and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his son, Robert Alfred Whiting (1986); sister, Marguerite Allen; brothers, Stuart Whiting, and George Peter Whiting (in infancy); brothers-in-law, Lloyd Harding and Earle Allen; niece, Katrina (Whiting) Blackmore. Following Bob’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. There was a graveside service for friends and family, at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2008, at the Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix. The Rev. Karen Pierce conducted the service. July 6 to July 12, 2008 PROMINENT ANNAPOLIS VALLEY FARMER PASSES AWAY Purdy Austin “Mannie” Lewis – 70, of West Berwick, passed away suddenly, Monday, July 7, 2008 at home. Born in Grafton, Kings County, he was a son of Lois (Brown), Dempsey Corner and the late Lloyd Lewis. He was a graduate of Berwick High School and in 1962 married his wife and best friend, Annette. They settled in Weston and together operated a large mixed farming operation for many years. In 1994 they moved to West Berwick, where they continued in farming. Mannie was a member of both the Kings County and Nova Scotia Federations of Agriculture and was a former director of both the Grain Marketing Board and the Berwick Arena.  Mannie and Annette were both members of C.A.P.S. (Companion Animal Protection Society) from where they adopted their faithful cat, Maggie May. He was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing ball and hockey and was especially fond of snowmobiling, having hosted numerous races, raising funds for trail maintenance. He had a great sense of humour and a quick wit and enjoyed his daily social hour with his friends at Tim Horton’s. He is survived by his wife, the former Annette Huntley; two sisters, Jean (Cyril) Huntley, South Berwick; Betty Ann (James) Sparks, Hanwell, New Brunswick; two brothers, David, Ukraine; Michael, Donnellans Brook; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Cecil and Marie Huntley, who he thought dearly of. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2008, Reverend Leon Langille officiating. Burial took place in the Berwick Cemetery. Flowers will be gratefully accepted or donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. July 6 to July 12, 2008 PETERSON, William Carmen - 45, East Green Harbour, passed away in V.G. Hospital, Halifax, Monday, July 7, 2008. Born in Sandy Point, he was a son of Shirley (Winter) and the late William Peterson. After graduating from high school, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, serving for three years. He was a fisherman, and worked in fish plants. He went back to school at the Shelburne Community College to study business. He owned and operated Lockeport Golden Smokehouse for six years which employed 25-30 people. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Peterson and (Jim Marsh); wife, the former Krista Williams; son, Christopher; daughters, Tanya and Tamara of Cape Sable Island; brother, Ricky (Millie Rhuland), Jordan Falls; sisters, Irene Garland, Woodlawn Drive; Barbara (Bob) Hiltz, Jordan Falls; Linda Peterson (David) Blades, Yarmouth; Susan (Raymond) Gohier, Oak Park. No visitation by request. Memorial service was held on Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m. in Trinity United Church, Rev. Joanne McFadden officiated. Interment in Upper Sandy Point Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Upper Sandy Point Cemetery or N.S. Diabetic Association. July 6 to July 12, 2008 YOUNG, Mary “ Alida”, 90, Shelburne, passed away in Roseway Manor, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., on Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Born in Shelburne she was a daughter of the late Clifford and Mabel (Acker) DeChamp. Alida was an avid bowler and bingo player. She enjoyed her family, and loved family gatherings, her flower garden and knitting. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, She was endeared by many at Roseway Manor. She had a great sense of humor. Alida was employed by Roseway Hospital as a secretary, worked with Statistics Canada and was secretary of the Resident Council at Roseway Manor. She is survived by son, Terence (Margaret) Young, Wellington, Halifax Co.; daughters, Deanna (Donald) Blades, Clyde River; Doreen (Rodney) Deltgen, Shiloh, Illinois; Charlene (John) Bain, Leduc, Alberta; brother, Roger DeChamp, Shelburne; sister, Amy Kavanagh, Bretton Woods, N.H; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Freeman; daughter, Grace Louise, in infancy; granddaughter, Carol and great grandson, Reginald McKay. A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 12 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne with Rev. Carole Nixon officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Roseway Manor Fund or charity of choice.
