June 29 to July 5, 2008 continued BRITTAIN, Anita Hope - Passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008. Born on September 8, 1932, in Litchfield, Annapolis Co., she was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Dorothy (Robinson) Hurlburt. She leaves behind her loving husband of 56 years, Harold; their family, Gwen (Chuck), Halifax; Wayne (Nancy), Forest Glen; Heather (Glenn), Forest Glen and Valerie (David), Barrington; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous aunts and cousins. Growing up, Mom lived in different parts of the Atlantic Provinces with her family. Settling in Carleton, Mom was a teacher but put her career aside to become a wonderful mother and wife. Over the years she was active in Busy Beavers Sewing Club, Home and School, Hospital Auxiliary, Forest Glen Community Centre, and the Royal Canadian Legion, 167 Auxiliary. Mom loved life. She loved camping and their camping friends were always fishing, hunting or blue grassing, building a large circle of friends in both Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. The family wishes to thank Dr. Shelagh Leahey, the nursing staff of 3 East, VON and all others that have assisted Mom in any way. She leaves behind a host of friends that will forever hold fond memories in their hearts. As she wished, cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. There was no visitation. A memorial service was held in the chapel of Sweeny’s Funeral Home on Tuesday July 8, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. A.D. “Bill” Newell officiating. Interment followed at the Forest Glen Cemetery, after which, family and friends were welcome to gather at the Forest Glen Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Durkee Memorial Library, Carleton, Yarmouth Co., or to a charity of choice. June 29 to July 5, 2008 continued MAHANEY, Albert “Al” Victor Jr., 74, Shelburne, formerly of Boston, Mass., passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 5, 2008. Born on February 18, 1934, in Boston Back Bay, he was a son of the late Albert Victor and Josephine (Vito) Mahaney. Al grew up in Newton, Mass and was a long time resident of both Waltham and Sudbury, Mass., prior to moving to Nova Scotia. During this time he was employed with the Macarae Furniture Co. in Sudbury, Mass., Red Cab Taxi in Waltham, and Nickles Machine Shop, Waltham, Mass. After relocating to Nova Scotia he was involved in Real Estate and was employed with Huskilson’s Chrysler in Shelburne. Country, western and blue grass music was a large part of Al’s life. While in Massachusettes he played at the Indian Ranch in Webster, the Hillbilly Ranch in Boston, and the Lonestar Ranch in New Hampshire. He went by the stage name “Hank the Drifter”, and played with many of music’s up and coming stars like Doug Garren, Lefty Frezell, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Dolly Parton, Red Sovine, Buck Owens, Al Green, Johnny Cash, Johnny White, Dick Curless, Mack Wiseman, Dotty West, Roy Acuff and Hank Thompson, to mention a few. He also sang on a radio station with Gene Lavern on Sunday nights in Fitchberg, Mass, and had his own radio show in Waltham, Mass., WCOB, Hayloft Jamboree, where he played and sang country music. After moving to Nova Scotia in 1970, he continued to sing and play and kept quite busy at it. He was involved in numerous committees in the Town of Shelburne, Liverpool (Hank Snow Society) and Bridgewater. He volunteered a lot of his time to organize and perform in numerous variety shows to help families in need. He is survived by daughter, Billie Jo Mahaney, grandsons, Calvin and Ryan; daughter Katherine Mahaney and granddaughter, Tiffany; daughter Karen Mahaney and granddaughter, Kayla; brother, Robert Mahaney, Auburndale, Mass; sisters, (DD) Josephine Lamore, Vermont; Thelma Borey, Wallpole, Mass; nieces and nephews, Scott, Anita, Josephine, Clarence, Ronald, Linda, Debbie and Jay. Funeral service was held on Thursday, July 10, 2008 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tom Davidson officiating. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to N.S. Heart & Stroke Foundation, Shelburne United Baptist Church or N.S. Diabetic Association.
